AIE - Open Day, Sunday 17th August, 2014

Study Assist is an Australian Government program that assists tertiary students with financing

University of Wollongong – Engineering - CIVIL ATAR (UAI): 80
Civil engineers build and maintain the infrastructure of advanced modern living. They plan,
design, construct, operate and maintain everything from buildings to bridges, tunnels and dams,
highways and airports to power plants, water and sewerage systems.
The main areas of civil engineering are:

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) starts with basic sciences and an introduction to
civil engineering covering the practice areas of surveying, construction and design; engineering
sciences and technology follow; and finally, the professionally orientated subjects covering
management, engineering applications and design.
A Flexible Entry option is available if you are undecided about which major you would like to
pursue.
Double majors provide the knowledge and competencies to practise as a professional engineer in
two engineering disciplines. This program is available by transfer only following completion of a
successful first year of study.

EARLY ENTRY PROGRAMS
University of New England: Early Entry Program
This program offers early entry for Year 12 students to the University of New England based on
their school’s recommendation rather than their final marks. Early entry is available for most
UNE degrees to current Year 12 students, full-time students preparing to sit the NSW HSC in a
TAFE College in NSW or ACT, or full-time TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate students.

University of Sydney Early Offer Year 12 - Applications open Wed 6 August
The University of Sydney Early Offer Year 12 program provides university entry to students who
may not receive the ATAR needed for entry into a particular course, but have the enthusiasm
and commitment for the discipline, and are able to get a recommendation from their school
principal. To be eligible, students need to be studying the required perquisites for their desired
course, in addition to either studying at a low socioeconomic school as identified by the
government, or experiencing financial hardship at the time of application.

University of Newcastle: Year 12 Bonus Points & Regional/Rural Preference Scheme
Year 12 students can be awarded up to four bonus points for high achievement in certain
Tertiary subjects. In addition, students who study in certain rural and regional areas may also
qualify for an additional four bonus points.

University of Sydney Rural Entry Scheme
The University offers special entry schemes for applicants form rural backgrounds, linked to the
faculties of Pharmacy and Veterinary Science. Applicants who are approved under these schemes
may qualify for admission with an ATAR that is close to, but below, the normal entry standard
for their course of choice.

ACU Early Achievers’ Program
ACU’s Early Achievers Program is open to school leavers and considers the voluntary

UNSW Australian Robertson Scholars Program 2014
Applications close Friday 5 December
One student is selected to complete a four-year undergraduate degree in the United States at
either Duke University or the University of North Carolina. The scholarship is valued at $200,000
and pays for full tuition, room and board and living.

Nursing and Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarship and Support Scheme

This program offers financial assistance to young people aged 12-18 for use towards travel,

The Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) is a national independent charity
administering tertiary scholarships for children and grandchildren of ex-service men and women.
Scholarship applications open on August 18 to the children
Scholarship selection is open to children and in some cases grandchildren of a veteran and is
based on need and merit. Applicants can be high-school leavers starting university or current
university students and eligible for Youth Allowance hence studying full time. Scholarships are
generally paid for three years and are between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. Applications for 2015

Defence Force Information
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OFFICER ENTRY AND GENERAL ENTRY?
Officers in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are leaders, managers and decision makers in
either the Navy, Army or Air Force. An Officer must be capable of using judgement, reason and
logic to quickly assess situations and respond accordingly, regardless of complexity. Information

Projects Abroad – Online Information Session Overseas Volunteer Projects for High School

The Scribe Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers
Writers under 30 should submit a nonfiction piece of any genre such as a memoir, essay or creative
nonfiction. 5000-10000 words.
The winner will receive a $1500 cash prize, chance to meet with a publisher or an editor to
experience the process of working with an editor.
