Sample Cover Letter – Applying where no job has been advertised 2 Simon Hacek 100 Old Crown Road KENSINGTON NSW 2052 Telephone: 0414 662 313 E-mail: simon@example.com Monday 23 July 2010 Attention: Ms Adriana Anginelli, Human Resources Fold Car Company 1 Sydney Road SYDNEY NSW 2052 Dear Ms Anginelli, I am a fourth year honours Engineering student at the University of new South Wales, majoring in Physical Metallurgy and I will complete my degree in December 2010. I have a strong automotive engineering background; being involved in the family automotive and fabricating business from a young age. My grandfather, father and uncle alike are all qualified automotive mechanics. I work under the same roof. Of interest to the Fold Car Company, would be that I am also a part of the University of New South Wales Mechanical Engineering team that is currently working on the development and construction of a Formula 1 vehicle. In conjunction with this team, and as a part of my design project, I have developed and constructed a new inlet manifold unit (twin butterfly system) which maximises and directs airflow over the fuel injectors, over all rev ranges. I am also writing an honours thesis paper on strip casting and microstructure development in magnesium alloys. In conjunction with my thesis adviser at the University of New South Wales, I have plans to apply for an international patent for a revolutionary method of producing magnesium sheet products. Considering the increasing demand for lighter, more efficient cars, and also the fact that the Fold Car Company has a ten year contract to take delivery of up to 50% of planned production of magnesium for use in its vehicles, I feel that my work and experience in this area may be of use to you. As a part of my degree, I have recently competed three months industrial training with Direct Car and Engines (DC & E) Products and Services, who not only cast, machine and construct their own high performance fuel injection system for Fold V8 race applications, but also machine those for Group A touring Cars (Mark Larcim-Race Team). DC & E are also the New South Wales distributor of the DRB Snake (replicas), the construction of which I was also involved in. If you are looking for an enthusiastic and extremely motivated person who can display initiative, creativity and devotion in his work and enjoys working in a team environment, please consider what I have to offer. I look forward to exploring this opportunity further. Yours sincerely Simon Hacek
