2012 Excel Chapter and State Council Awards
S
HRM recognizes chapters and state
councils with Excel Awards. The award
is given at four levels—Platinum, Gold,
Silver and Bronze—each of which build on
a prescribed set of requirements and
accomplishments set out in the SHRM
Affiliate Program for Excellence (SHAPE).
SHAPE is a planning and reporting tool that
outlines the minimum requirements for
chapters and state councils to remain in
good standing with SHRM on an annual
basis. Each award level denotes increasing
activities and initiatives completed by
SHRM chapters and councils.
Congratulations to the 2012 Excel
Award winners!

SHRM Enhances Pinnacle Awards
By SHRM Online staff
A
dding more winners and grouping submissions by chapter size
are among the changes to the Pinnacle Awards, sponsored by the Society
for Human Resource Management
(SHRM) and ADP Inc.
“We always want to refine [the Pinnacle Award] to be the most effective
program in terms of recognizing and
rewarding our chapters and state councils,” said Sandy Boost, SPHR, CAE,
business manager of SHRM Member
Services.
More Winners, Three Award Categories
In recent years up to seven chapters and
two state councils received the Pinnacle
Award, which consists of $1,000, a diamond pin for chapter presidents and
state council directors, and a replica of
the pin for board members of each of
the winning groups. Beginning in 2013,
up to nine chapters and up to three
state councils will receive the award.
Award levels will now be based on
size so that chapters with similar membership numbers compete against one
another:
•• Chapters with 10 to 100 members.
•• Chapters with 101 to 500 members.
•• Chapters with more than 500
members.
•• State councils.
“The task force recognized the need
to reward chapters of all sizes to address
a common misperception that you need
to be a large, mega or super-mega chapter to win an award,” said Susan Post,
PHR, CAE, director of SHRM’s Eastern
Region, in an e-mail. “The creation of
these tiers clearly enables chapters of
any size to be eligible to win.”
Chapters and state councils will
submit applications in one of three
categories:
•• Serving the HR Professional: activities that support HR professionals and
enable them to be successful business
leaders.
•• Advancing the HR Profession: activities that create awareness with, or support, key constituents—i.e., workplace,
government and regulatory representatives; employers; schools; the media;
and the community at large.
•• Enhancing the SHRM Community:
activities that support SHRM, meet
members’ needs, or further chapter or
state council efforts.
At least one Pinnacle Award may be
awarded for each category at each size
level.

Special Expertise Panels Eye Trends for 2014
By Nancy M. Davis
S
ix SHRM Special Expertise Panels were
scheduled to meet in Chicago on Saturday to identify HR trends for 2014. Their
work will be published in Future Insights:
Top Trends According to SHRM’s HR Subject Matter Expert Panels, which is compiled
every other year.
The trend-setting process involves an initial
brainstorming to come up with key trends.
Then the panelists narrow their lists of trends
down to 10 topics for each subject area and
rank them in order of priority, explained Jennifer Schramm, manager of the Workplace
Trends and Forecasting program at SHRM.
“The panels’ trends lists are an important
source of information for SHRM,” Schramm
said. “The views of the panels help SHRM
prioritize activities and projects and plan for
the future. The lists are shared with the Board
of Directors for use in shaping the association’s annual agenda. It is made available to
members and journalists, who often use the
trends as a base for articles.”
Watch for the next Future Insights to be
available online early in 2014.
For more information about the Special
Expertise Panels and how to become a panel
member, visit www.shrm.org/Communities/SHRMSpecialExpertisePanels or contact

Volunteer Leaders Keep Communication Open
Regional Councils, MAC Serve as Link Between State Councils, SHRM
By Erin Binney
V
olunteer leaders are essential
to the successful operation of
SHRM, and HR professionals serving on the regional councils and on
the Membership Advisory Council (MAC) are no exception. The
regional councils identify emerging
strategic HR issues, and the MAC
shares those issues with SHRM leadership. Together, the regional councils
and the MAC serve as communications links on human resource management issues between affiliated
state councils and SHRM.
There are five regional councils, one
for each of SHRM’s U.S. geographic
regions: North Central, Northeast,
Pacific West, Southeast and Southwest Central. The councils are made
up of current and immediate past state
council directors from each state in
the region. They meet in person three
times a year and periodically via conference calls. In addition to providing
their members an organized and structured way to network and share HR
best practices and challenges, regional
councils play a key role in identifying
and compiling feedback on emerging
strategic HR issues. The councils also
assemble operational input for areas
that are of interest to volunteer leaders, such as chapter affiliation and
operating requirements.
Relying on the feedback gathered
through the regional councils, the
MAC communicates directly with
SHRM leadership about the HR issues
and operational ideas that have been
identified. One person from each of the
regional councils is elected annually to
serve on the MAC, which shares information several times a year with the
boards of directors from SHRM, the
SHRM Foundation and the HR Certification Institute.
The regional councils are helping the
MAC gather feedback on several focus
areas for 2013, according to Susan
Post, SPHR, director, Eastern Region,
for SHRM. She said these areas include
skills gap challenges, workplace flexibility, HR competencies and HR standards. The councils are also helping
the MAC gather feedback on SHRM’s
global strategy, the SHRM Foundation and the HR Certification Institute,
Post added. Following are the regional

Bring Learning Home with Conference On Demand
By Aliah D. Wright
B
ecause there are more than 200 educational sessions during the SHRM Annual Conference &
Exposition, it is impossible to attend all the sessions
that interest you. But attendees can catch up on sessions they missed by watching them later through
SHRM’s Conference On Demand product.
Attendees with PHR, SPHR, GPHR or a California certification can earn up to 14 recertification
credits by attending the conference in person. By
watching sessions online through On Demand, they
can earn up to 20 additional recertification credits at
their convenience—“even from the comfort of their
home or office,” said Judit Slezak, manager of On
Demand, Virtual Conferences. “With On Demand,
they get recordings of over 200 educational sessions;
videos of select keynote presentations, mega sessions
and Masters Series; and any accompanying PowerPoint presentations,” Slezak said. On Demand con-
ference sessions can now be viewed on an iPhone,
iPad or any other tablet device, and group discounts
are available for five or more purchases.
For more information, visit the On Demand
booth next to the registration area in McCormick
Place.
New! Tell Your Colleagues to Watch Live
Have colleagues who are unable to attend the conference this year? Tell them that through On Demand, they can watch some of the sessions in
real-time through live streaming as the conference
happens.
The following sessions will be live-streamed during
the conference:
Today
•• 10:45 a.m.-noon: “Reality-Based Leadership: Ditch
