GEARING
FOR GROWTH
The sustained growth of
businesses in the energy and
resources sector – even in times
of rapid industry expansion –
can rely to a large extent upon
the skills, foresight and decisionmaking abilities of senior
management. To make the
most of emerging opportunities,
companies need a vision for
growth and a true appreciation
???
of
the complex environments
in which they operate.

Possessing analytical skills in combination with
an understanding of both the technical and
economic aspects of a company’s operations is a
huge asset. Having a deeper insight into the wide
range of factors that can influence productivity
and profitability is mandatory for progress. Being
able to bridge understanding and communication
divides within a company can significantly
contribute to an organisation’s success.
Professionals with this potential are exactly the
kind of highly strategic and versatile managers
being trained by Curtin University through its
programs in mineral and energy economics,
in support of the resource industry’s developing
workplace needs.

Career advancement at the
Department of Mineral and Energy
Economics (DMEE)
CROSSING THE
KNOWLEDGE DIVIDE
PRACTICAL
PROGRAMS FOR A
MOBILE WORKFORCE
The courses are offered by the Department
of Mineral and Energy Economics (DMEE),
housed within the Curtin Graduate School of
Business (CGSB). They enable resources sector
professionals to combine sound technical
knowledge in mineral exploration, extraction and
processing with an appreciation of the economic
frameworks in which the sector operates. This
interdisciplinary skill-set is increasingly vital to
resources companies that wish to strengthen
their long-term future and profitability.
Master programs within the department offer
streams for those with a non-technical or
business background and for those who have
a technical background in the resources field,
such as mining engineers, geologists and
metallurgists. The program exposes all students
to a strong knowledge-base in economic,
financial, management, legal, regulatory,
political and social environments. Students
gain significant exposure to their new and
complementary discipline: non-technical students
are immersed in the workings and language of
the energy and mining sectors through time
spent at Curtin’s Western Australian School of
Mines (WASM) in Kalgoorlie, while students with
Most students within the Department of
Mineral and Energy Economics are mid-career
resources and energy sector professionals
preparing to move into more senior
management or decision-making roles. All
students must have at least three years of
industry experience and a first degree to
qualify for entry to a master program.
a technical background are brought face-to-face
with the tactics and terminology of the business
world. Both groups graduate with a much broader
and deeper understanding of the resources
industry, along with the applicable tools they
need to put their new knowledge into action.
The CGSB offers a double degree, combining
DMEE’s Master of Science (Mineral and Energy
Economics) with the internationally accredited
Curtin Master of Business Administration (MBA).
The course is proving to be one of the school’s
fastest growing programs, attracting those
wanting to gain a thorough grounding in business
within the energy and resources sector.
The teaching programs are offered in a highly
flexible way to cater for busy professionals
endeavouring to balance work and study
commitments, and for students working on
a fly-in-fly-out basis.
CURTIN’S
INDUSTRY FOCUS
AND COMMITMENT
DMEE offers one of only four Mineral and Energy
Master of Science courses internationally and
our student cohort represents 30 different
countries. Originally established with the
University’s Western Australian School of
Mines (WASM) in the prominent mining town
of Kalgoorlie (with which it maintains strong
linkages), DMEE is now housed within the
CGSB in Perth’s central business district. This
complements the CGSB’s reputation as a
leading provider of graduate management and
leadership education with particular expertise
in resources and energy markets.
This strong resources and energy focus is also
supported in the wider University environment.
Curtin has demonstrated a long-term
commitment to advancing the interests of the
resources and energy sector and has in recent
years declared research for this sector to be
one of its four key research priorities. This
commitment has been further consolidated
in recent times with the establishment of
the Curtin Institute for Minerals and Energy
(CIME) which delivers innovative, crossdisciplinary solutions to the challenges faced
by the minerals and energy sectors. This
includes a co-operative effort to populate one
of the six research themes within the Centre
for Exploration Targeting (CET), progressive
risk and value analysis, whose leading edge
research activities will directly inform the
teaching programs of DMEE.
While the courses have a strong theoretical
base, they are characterised by their
practical relevance. All teaching faculty
have considerable experience in industry.
Participants also benefit from the global
popularity of the courses providing great
opportunities for international perspectives
to be shared and for long-term international
contacts and networks to be established.
To date, the courses have attracted students
from numerous countries around the world
which includes but is not limited to Chile, Brazil,
Columbia, Peru, South Africa, the United States,
Japan, China, Korea,Thailand, Uganda, Kenya,
Argentina and Bhutan.
