They enable resources sector professionals to combine sound technical knowledge in mineral exploration, extraction and processing with an appreciation of the economic frameworks in which the sector operates. This interdisciplinary skill-set is increasingly vital to resources companies that wish to strengthen their long-term future and profitability. Master programs within the department offer streams for those with a non-technical or business background and for those who have a technical background in the resources field, such as mining engineers, geologists and metallurgists. The program exposes all students to a strong knowledge-base in economic, financial, management, legal, regulatory, political and social environments. Students gain significant exposure to their new and complementary discipline: non-technical students are immersed in the workings and language of the energy and mining sectors through time spent at Curtin’s Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) in Kalgoorlie, while students with Most students within the Department of Mineral and Energy Economics are mid-career resources and energy sector professionals preparing to move into more senior management or decision-making roles. This strong resources and energy focus is also supported in the wider University environment. Curtin has demonstrated a long-term commitment to advancing the interests of the resources and energy sector and has in recent years declared research for this sector to be one of its four key research priorities. This commitment has been further consolidated in recent times with the establishment of the Curtin Institute for Minerals and Energy (CIME) which delivers innovative, crossdisciplinary solutions to the challenges faced by the minerals and energy sectors. This includes a co-operative effort to populate one of the six research themes within the Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET), progressive risk and value analysis, whose leading edge research activities will directly inform the teaching programs of DMEE. While the courses have a strong theoretical base, they are characterised by their practical relevance. All teaching faculty have considerable experience in industry.
