This is the original fundraising poster from 1904/1905 which helped raise donations for the University of
Sheffield.
Over £50,000 (worth more than £15 million today) was donated by steelworkers, coal miners, factory workers and the people of Sheffield in penny donations to help found the University.
A century on, the University is now rated as one of the top world universities – according to the Shanghai Jiao Tong
Academic Ranking of World Universities.

As a place to live and study, we believe
Sheffield is impossible to beat.
And the latest Times Higher Education
Student Experience Survey highlights just how special Sheffield is, voted number one in the UK for student experience.
We believe that’s because we are building something very special here in the city we call home - academic excellence and the very best student experience.
• Our physicists are helping to build the world’s biggest and most revolutionary solar telescope in Hawaii.
• Our cancer researchers have developed a new drug which could soon be treating ovarian cancer patients throughout Europe and the United States.
• We’ve launched an initiative to tackle the world’s greatest energy challenges. Energy 2050 brings together international scholars, industry experts and government officials to drive forward energy research and innovation.
• Our scientists have succeeded in using a 3D printed guide to help nerves damaged in traumatic incidents repair themselves.
• Our new research centre is working to address food security issues around the world.
• The University is leading the UK’s first dedicated research centre to improve higher education.
• Engineers at the University are using glow in the dark tampons to identify where waste water is polluting our rivers.
• Our researchers have identified ways that technology can help people improve and maintain positive mental health.
• Dr Alison Gartland from our Department of Human
Metabolism has identified a key to preventing secondary cancers in breast cancer patients.
• Students from the Department of Biomedical Science are leading a project to raise awareness of organ donation.
• A group of students from the University have launched an initiative to collect surplus food from campus food outlets and redistribute it to those who need it most in the city.
• Our new £81 million building – The Diamond – has reached a landmark phase in its construction ahead of opening for teaching in September 2015.
As well as specialist engineering teaching facilities, the building will house a range of lecture theatres, seminar rooms, open-plan learning spaces, library and IT services, and space for informal get-togethers.
The building marks our largest ever investment in teaching and learning.
• We’re offering £2.2 million worth of postgraduate scholarships in one of the biggest postgraduate taught scholarship schemes in the country.
• We’re backing the development of a Business
Innovation District to make Sheffield a better place to visit, work and live.
• Our construction of one of the most advanced factories in the world has passed another milestone. Factory 2050 will be the UK’s first fullyreconfigurable digital factory.
• We’ve submitted a masterplan for the next phase of our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre
(AMRC) with Boeing which could create 1,800 new jobs and bring £72.4 million to the local economy.
• We’re supporting an ambitious plan to create the
UK’s first Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District around the Sheffield and Rotherham corridor to create new jobs and strengthen our economy.
• Second year philosophy student Alex Bushnell has written and co-produced a film that appeared at the
Cannes Film Festival.
• Dr Caroline Sarojini Hart from our School of
Education has developed a downloadable resource to help schools across the country implement new food standards.
• Health researcher Dr Clare Relton is leading a scheme to improve breastfeeding rates in areas where rates are traditionally low.
• Sheffield scientists are part of a new research centre in India working to find solutions to excessive use of antibiotics.
• A safer, cheaper and more viable alternative for disposing of nuclear waste developed by our engineers is set to be trialled in the USA.
• Third year PhD student Marwa Mahmoud from our
Department of Cardiovascular Science has been awarded a Young Investigator Prize for her research into blood flow patterns at disease prone sites in the arteries.

THE SHEFFIELD AFFIRMATION
Statement of the Principles of the
Hippocratic Oath to be presented by
Professor Paul M. Speight, Dean of the
School of Clinical Dentistry.
Students in the Faculty of Medicine,
Dentistry & Health are encouraged, and taught, to aspire to the highest standards of professional behaviour and practise and we expect our graduates to maintain their high professional standards throughout their careers.
For many centuries, physicians were expected to take the Hippocratic
Oath to give voice to the ideals of professional practise. But the Oath itself is no longer seen as fit for purpose - it was first penned in the
4th Century BC - and the University of
Sheffield educates healthcare students of many different professional groups.
Now the University expects Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health students to take part in the Sheffield
Affirmation, which places the care and protection of patients, and high professional expectations, in a modern context.

THE SHEFFIELD AFFIRMATION
Statement of the Principles of the
Hippocratic Oath by Professor
Deborah Murdoch-Eaton, Dean of
Medical Education.
The Sheffield Affirmation to be led by
Samuel Meadows
• I will remain loyal to the high traditions and responsibilities of my profession.
• The health and welfare of my patients and the public will be my paramount consideration. I will do my best for my patients and the public at all times and refrain from any action which may be harmful.
• I will, in the course of my work, come into special relationships with my fellow human beings calling for great propriety and trust. I will avoid all wrong doing and anything mischievous or dishonourable.
• Whatsoever I see or hear during my practice that ought to be kept secret, I will not divulge.

The University Arms, whose background colour is azure, contains a gold-edged open book at its centre, on which is inscribed Disce Doce (Learn and Teach).
On either side of the book is a sheaf of eight silver arrows, which is derived from the shield of old Sheffield. The gold crown is the Crown of Success and the White Rose of York denotes the University’s home county. The scroll carries the motto of Firth College, Rerum Cognoscere Causas (To Discover the Causes of Things; from Virgil’s Georgics II, 490).
The University mace, which precedes the presiding officer in the academic procession, is made from silver gilt. Used for the first time in 1909, it bears the Arms of both the University and the City of Sheffield, the York Rose, and the figure of
Minerva holding the wreath and palm branch.
In the unlikely event of an emergency, you will be advised to leave the building either by the sounding of the alarm or by a public announcement. You should leave the building as quickly as possible using the nearest emergency exit. Please follow the directions of the
Marshals to the designated assembly point.
Two first aid professionals are on duty at each ceremony.
Please contact a Marshal or member of the Events Team if you require assistance.
Should you lose any personal items during graduation, please go to the Enquiries Desk for assistance. All lost property will be retained at the Enquiries Desk for the duration of the ceremonies. Once the ceremonies are over, any unclaimed items will be forwarded to Building
Reception Services within the University. You can contact
Building Reception Services on 0114 222 9233.
