North, South, East, West…I like Waseca the Best!
The Discover Waseca logo on the North watertower is a welcoming portal, the Waseca Welcome
sign has been installed on South Highway 13 interchange. To the East…Maplewood Park and
the Clear Lake bike trail will have new wayfinding signs. The WATVB has renewed the contract
for the Discover Waseca Billboard West on Highway 14. This is the first time in many years that
Waseca is clearly signed in all directions. In addition to branding the Discover Waseca Logo we have added a QR code that can be
scanned for additional information on Waseca Tourist activities and events.

Along with providing educational seminars and workshops in tourism, the SMTA affords us the opportunity for regional collaboration
and coordination with an annual Southern Minnesota Tourism advertising campaign designed to increase travel and tourism across
the southern region of Minnesota. These collaborative efforts are seen on KARE 11 TV, Midwest Living Magazine, Parade Magazine,
Explore MN Magazine and the Mall of America tourist center. Readers and visitors are able to select Waseca as a destination and
receive more information on shopping, dinning, events and overnight accomodations in the area.
Direct economic benefits of tourism include employment, income, business receipts, proprietor’s income and corporate profit,
dividends, interest, rent, and federal, state and local taxes. Tourism marketing provides a measurable return on investment. Every $1
invested in tourism marketing returns an estimated $4.60 in new state and local taxes, $20.40 wages and $53 in gross sales. Travelers
in Minnesota spend an average of more than $33 million a day.
*(Sources: MN figures from Explore Minnesota Tourism, MN Dept Revenue, and Travel Industry Assoc.)
How can your business continue benefit from the marketing the WATVB does? Link your website to the DiscoverWaseca website and
update your events on the DiscoverWaseca community calendar.
It’s just a peeka of what we have in Waseca! Special thanks to all to worked at the Chamber/WATVB booth at the fair.
The Waseca Area Chamber of Commerce mission
statement is to serve as the voice for chamber members,
representing, advocating, and enhancing the business

Waseca Area Chamber of Commerce Board Member
Board meets last Tuesday’s at 7am.
Executive committee meets third Monday’s at noon.
“Collaborative efforts” seems to be the new catch phrase in many organizations. Collaboration
is defined as a process in which two or more organizations work together to realize shared
goals, this is more than the intersection of common goals seen in co-operative ventures, but
a collective determined to reach an identical objective. Teams that work collaboratively can
obtain greater resources, recognition and reward when facing finite resources.
In 2008, thru a collaborative effort between the Chamber of Commerce, WATVB, City of Waseca, and EDA, a strategic vision for
marketing and branding of the discoverWaseca logo began. It was their goal to create a positive image and identity to promote
business, foster growth and expand population thru targeted activities and signage where needed. To effectively launch a new brand,
the most visible elements must be converted first. As people see the brand thru ads, banners, water towers, etc. the message is
reinforced.
Realizing the importance of marketing and branding the discoverWaseca logo, the north water tower was embraced as our next
collaborative effort. Without this collaboration, the opportunity to have the logo on the water tower would not happen for another 15
years. Due to current economic conditions, we did not believe all the expenditure should fall to the city. Therefore, the Chamber of
Commerce, EDA, WATVB, and the City of Waseca collaborated to decrease the financial burden on any one organization and still
achieve the goal of having the logo on the north water tower. If you have not seen the logo on the water tower, go take a look; I think
you will be impressed! Thru collaborative efforts like this, we can accomplish our goals.
New Board Member Election

WACC Board of Directors Chamber Liaison Economic Development
From the Boardroom
As we make the transition from summer to fall, I reflect on Waseca’s community
events held over the past few months. Walk to the Park Day, Lakefest’s Music
in the Park, Waseca Triathlon, Waseca County Fair and the Chamber Annual
Golf Outing are only a few of the events that brought the community together.
This fall and winter will bring many more annual festivals and happenings!
It entails a lot of volunteers and volunteer hours to make these things happen,
but they always seem to have wonderful turn outs and everyone involved has
a good time.
Since becoming a Waseca Area Chamber board member, I’ve had the chance to
meet some really wonderful people and it has given me the opportunity to learn
about the challenges other companies face in these tough economic times. To
keep our community sound, we need a balance that includes strong businesses
that generate jobs, a healthy school system, citizen friendly local government,
recreational options and pride among our citizens. Working together with
a common vision, I believe Waseca is on the right course in remaining an
attractive place to live and to raise children.
With a community-minded attitude and strategic leadership style, both the men
and women that make up the Waseca Area Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors and Ambassadors all have one thing in common: they serve as role
models in whatever business they represent, and always commit to doing their
best. Though it’s only my first year of service, I am proud to be a member of
this board.
I urge you to get your nomination in for Business of the Year. For details, stop by
the Chamber office at 111 North State Street or call Kim or Laura at 835-3260.
Reminder: Chamber Bucks are great as employee
incentives and can be used for at a multitude of businesses
in the Waseca area. They also make wonderful gifts.

I believe this is an excellent opportunity to get the well
deserved recognition that you have earned and continually
prove to the community that your company believes in
Waseca. It is because businesses like yours that we have so
many organizations or groups that are able to do the good
work they do. Thanks you all for your generosity and
continuous giving.
Kim Foels – Executive Director
Waseca Area Business Gives is an excellent way for businesses to
receive recognition from their peers and their community for the many
contributions they make to their local community.
Businesses are recognized for giving cash and/or in-kind contributions
to charitable organizations amounting to 2% or more of their pretax
earnings. Best of all, because recognition is based on the percent of
income given in cash and in-kind donations, a small business that
gives $1,000 each year can receive the same recognition as one that
contributes $10,000.

Does your business give back to the Community?
Get your company recognized by Governor Dayton!
Businesses are encouraged to participate by completing a participation
form and submitting it to the Waseca Area Chamber. On the form,
a business certifies that during its most recently completed fiscal
year it gave at least 2% of its pretax earnings in cash and/or in-kind
contributions to charitable organizations. A Calculation Worksheet is
available to help with calculating the 2%.
Each qualifying business will be recognized at our annual Business
& Industry Luncheon meeting and will receive a letter of thanks and
congratulations from the governor at that event.
The program is managed by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce in
association with local chamber partners. Waseca Area Business Gives
joins more than 30 other local chambers participating in this program.

What is a QR Code and how can they help your business?
Quick Response Codes (QR Codes) and other 2 dimensional codes are similar to barcodes. The key difference
between the two is the amount of data they can hold or share, there’s no limit to how much you can share with
QR Codes.
QR Codes are 2 Dimensional (2D) matrix barcodes that can hold thousands of alpha numeric characters of
information.
You can scan or read a QR Code with your iPhone, Android, Blackberry, or other camera-enabled smart phone.
You can link to:
How QR Codes Work
Digital content opens up on your mobile website and activate
a number of phone functions including email, IM & SMS, and
connect the mobile device to a web browser.
QR Code Generators – there are a number of sites for
generating QR Codes.
Some QR Code readers – APPS.
• iPhone – i-nigma or Qrafter
• Android – Barcode Scanner, Mobiletag
• Blackberry – Mobiletag, Scanlife
Practical uses of QR Codes
• Front or back of your business card
• Brochures
• Link to your bio info
• Sides of trucks and trailers
• Restaurant menus
• Front door of your business
Future of QR Codes
• Is limitless
• Next generation of QR Codes will hold even more information
– so much that an internet connection will not even be necessary.
• Content will be effectively embedded in the code
QR Codes Could Link to:
• Instructions
• Directions
• Process of hiring your professional services
• Mobilize them – Call to action with valuable
coupons and offers. Link your QR Code to a new
landing page with your incentives. Coupons are a nice
way to get new customers in the door and combine
with email options to build your customer list.
How about you? How can you use QR Codes
to promote and grow your business?
During the Waseca County Fair we had 7 member businesses display their
QR Codes on their banners. We had fairgoers guess how many QR Codes
were on the banners. The four lucky winners of $50 in Chamber Bucks were:
Becky Stenzel, Jenny Majors, Samantha Saba, and Veronica Sexton.
Southern Minnesota Tourism Association Meeting
Harlan Holmquist, board member of Waseca Area Tourism Visitor Bureau and member of the Waseca Area Chamber of Commerce attended
the Southern Minnesota Tourism Association’s (SMTA) meeting on July 21, 2011 at the Historic Hormel Home in Austin, Minnesota. Southern
Minnesota biggest promoters met to discuss tourism promotion strategies. The Southern Minnesota Tourism Association is a non-profit
organization working in cooperation with Explore Minnesota Tourism, are Visitor Bureaus and Chambers to promote Southern Minnesota as a
travel destination. 36 counties make up the collaboration of SMTA. They meet every other month.
Meeting topics included:
-Overview of the 2011’s Marketing efforts for Southern Minnesota, and updates and
opportunities from Explore Minnesota Tourism and other state agencies.
-Updates from the SMTA Marketing Committee, Education Committee, Government Relations
Committee, and the Explore Minnesota Tourism Council.
-A educational workshop presented by Dr. Lias, research scientist from Hormel Institute.
It was a great time to network and compare what’s happening in our communities.

Minnesota Chamber of Commerce
June 2011 Regional Policy Meetings
During June, Minnesota Chamber staff facilitated 24 regional policy meetings, 6 in the Twin Cities metro
area and 18 in Greater Minnesota. Attendance at the meetings ranged from less than 10 to more than
30. The regional meetings are the first step in the policy development process for 2012 and designed
as listening sessions for members to share their legislative priorities and business concerns. This year,
given the lack of an agreement on the state budget and impending state shutdown, both of those topics
were given significant attention.
Waseca Policy Session
June 14, 2011
Chamber member business participated in a round table discussion policy development. The group was
asked if there was one thing of highest importance to them to help business grow – What would that be?
The comments that were shared were:
• Reduce cost of health care
Reimburse employees for cost of individual policies
Health care was greater than the proposed tax bill
Really challenging for companies with greater than 50 employees, but less than 100.
• Fuel costs: increasing overhead
• Hold the line on taxes from top to bottom. Don’t let one government shift taxes and fees from
one to another.
• Government needs to live within it’s means
• Find ways to keep manufacturing jobs in MN; make it more competitive to have jobs here!
Budget
• Why go above the current $32 billion?
• 6% increase might be too much in this economy
• Some report for $34 billion; but also to stay at $32 billion
