Like most parts of the Caribbean, Saint Lucia has its share of large,
pampering all-inclusive resorts. But the island stands out from other
destinations for its luxurious, smaller-scale hotels with one-of-a-kind
designs that make the most of the surrounding natural beauty.

The wonders of Saint Lucia
Jade M ountain is a case in point. At this James Bond-style hilltop lair,
the vast bedrooms – called “sanctuaries” – bask in uninterrupted views
of the soaring Pitons over private, iridescent-tiled infinity plunge pools
through missing fourth walls.
Over at Ladera the highly individual suites, ranged along a high ridge,
have a similar missing wall set-up and equally mesmerising Piton views.
Both hotels are prime territory for romance and at Ladera honeymooners
can arrange for the hand-carved bed and other furnishings in their room
to be designed to their specifications – and then get everything shipped
home after they leave.

Several Saint Lucia hotels also offer out-of-the-ordinary spa
experiences. Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort – a remarkably sited
place in the cleavage of the Pitons that is much frequented by the
Hollywood A-list – has the island’s most striking spa. Its treatment rooms
are styled as treehouse cabanas and magically set above the forest
floor.
For a break wholly focused on health and wellness, consider booking in
to The BodyHoliday. Its rates include a daily treatment in its impressive
Moorish spa complex, as well as yoga, Pilates and tai chi sessions and a
vast selection of sports. BodyScience, a new programme with bespoke
meal plans and exercise routines based on DNA tests and an
assessment by an ayurvedic doctor, is being introduced this year.

Need help with tiresome chores such as unpacking and fixing dinner
reservations? Guests at Sugar Beach and Jade Mountain are provided
with a mobile device to contact a butler whenever the need arises.
A number of Saint Lucia’s luxurious properties also cater extremely well
to families. Windjammer Landing and The Landings offer the winning
family-friendly combination of spacious villas and multi-bedroom suites
with fully equipped kitchens, along with a full range of conventional hotel
facilities, including restaurants, bars, watersports, children’s clubs and
babysitting.
Where else to start a life of wedded bliss but

At both hotels, you can also arrange for a chef to cook for you in your
own villa or suite – the service is even included in the rates for guests
staying at Windjammer Landing’s three- or four-bedroom Estate Villas.

of villas to rent across Saint Lucia. Many of these enjoy elevated
positions with sea views and can come complete with chef, housekeeper,
gardener and on-demand babysitting service.
With such a wide choice of special places to stay on Saint Lucia, it’s hard
to pick just one base. A good plan is a two-centre holiday, staying for
some of the time at a hotel in the livelier north of the island and the rest
at a property in the slower-paced and more scenically arresting south.
It’s possible for a luxury Saint Lucia experience to begin as soon as you
leave home, because British Airways flights have First Class and Club
World cabins and Virgin Atlantic flights have Upper Class cabins, each
with supreme lie-flat seats, exceptional catering and access to airport
lounges.
And when you arrive in Saint Lucia, you could have a helicopter waiting
to take you direct to your hotel in less than half an hour, ready for a first
swim before that sundowner cocktail.
