In thinking about their loss, we anticipate the bare, winter months. I was reminded of this reflection by Mark Nepo about our tendency to cling. May these words open your heart. You should have received a letter at your home introducing our theme “Delight in Giving!” I envy the tree, how it reaches but never holds. If you were in church on Sun, Oct 21, you also had an opportunity to hear our first faith testimonial given by Richard Peters where he shared a faith-filled message of stewardship. "Things that matter come and go, but being touched and feeling life move on, we tend to cling and hold on, not wanting anything to change. Of course, this fails, and things do change. Often, we are stubborn enough to go after what we think is leaving, trying to manipulate and control the flow of life. Of course, this fails, too. Our prayer for you and your family is that you will take this year’s theme to heart and spend some time talking to your family and your faith community about stewardship. When we as a congregation invest thought and prayer into our stewardship decisions, we know that a sense of joy can and will drive all of our stewardship decisions. We can't stop life from flowing. So we are left with feeling what was and what is, and call the difference loss. But all the clinging and holding on only makes it worse. Now, new things come, and some of us anticipate the loss and just let the things of life go by without feeling them at all. I have done all these things, but when clear enough and open enough, I try to let things in, to let things touch me. I try not to poke and pull at them as they move through. It doesn't eliminate loss, but when trusting enough to let this happen, I am tuned like a harp held up to the wind." Peace, SUNDAY, NOV 18 Stewardship Sunday FREE Community Thanksgiving Meal at 12pm Special Note from Pastor Paul...I want to lift up Sunday, November 18. This is a special day in a number of ways – Sunday, November 18 is our Stewardship Celebration/ Consecration Sunday. Our theme for this year is, “Delight in Giving!” We have the privilege on Sunday, November 18, to dedicate our pledges/gifts for 2013. Supporting the ministry of Peace UCC through our financial gifts is an awesome, joyous time – so, I invite you to begin praying/discerning about why you give here at Peace, and what your financial gift to Peace UCC will be in 2013 to support the on-going, dynamic ministry here. This day will be highlighted by having Rev. Clyde Steckel share his message on this Sunday and to conclude this celebration day, we will be having our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. This dinner is once again a FREE-WILL dinner. Any proceeds (after expenses) go to the Peace UCC Emergency Fund. But we need your help on this day… we want you to invite your friends, neighbors, and loved-ones to join you for dinner… ALL ARE WELCOME!! As in past years, we will also extend our invitation to a variety of places/people in the Rochester community… so, you are invited to extend an extra-hand of welcome to any/all visitors who are with us on this day. In the next few weeks you will have additional opportunities to hear fellow members share their faith in stewardship moments, be inspired by our fall worship theme of “Delight in Giving!”, and on November 18th share a thanksgiving meal together as we celebrate consecration Sunday and offer our stewardship gifts to Peace. So join us on this thoughtful and prayerful stewardship journey as you discern your “Delight in Giving!”. Prayerfully, Stewardship Committee The Backpack Program is administered by Channel One to help fight childhood hunger. It serves 1200 children in the Rochester school district by supplying food for the weekend when they do not receive free/ reduced-fee breakfast and lunch meals at school. Peace UCC will be partnering with the First Unitarian Universalist Church (UUC) to support Willow Creek Middle School for the 2012 school year. Food is distributed in bulk by Channel One to each participating church on Wednesday, and then it is divided and packed by the church on Wednesday evenings. Each Friday, 21 registered students at Willow Creek pick up backpacks. Peace and the UUC are alternating months (UUC even months, Peace odd months) so our first month will be November. Signup sheets will be available in the Fellowship Hall for food pickup, backpack packing, and distribution. The Peace quilting group has already helped by making backpacks – special thanks for sharing your time and talents to support this program. We are also asking that you help “fill our packs.” Channel One aims to provide food for two meals each weekend day, and we will supplement their offerings. Generous donations from First Unitarian (UUC) have provided enough peanut butter so each child will receive two jars per month. We are hoping to collect canned/ pouch tuna and chicken, macaroni and cheese, 100% fruit juice boxes, and individual microwaveable entrees. You can also help Channel One by donating funds directly to the program. The approximate cost is $2.50/ student/week ($10/month); a $75 donation covers one backpack for the school year. For questions, please contact Alicia Buda at 358-8617 or by e-mail at babyskeeter@yahoo.com Thank you for your support of this important project! November Birthdays! Birthdays! The overall walk has collected more than $12,000 so far, with about 100 walkers from around the area participating. Peace Church raised more than $4,300 of that total - more than a third! Team Peace Atypical and Team Peace Classic did an amazing job representing Peace UCC on Oct 7, with walkers wearing bright signs designating their team affiliation. Final numbers and the team "winner" will be announced as soon as all envelopes are completed and returned. One-fourth of the Rochester walk's contributions will go to Channel One - over $3,000, which is enough to provide 15,000 meals to our neighbors struggling with hunger in our own community. Now celebrating its 32nd year, Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus (TCGMC) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) volunteer community chorus whose mission is Gay Men Building Community Through Music. Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus seeks to provide its members with rewarding musical experiences and to promote social exchange. As an organization that celebrates diversity and uses music as a way to transform, educate and heal, the Chorus works towards the elimination of homophobia and intolerance through community outreach. Choral singing, strongly embraced by the Scandinavian-German Lutheran communities who are still the core of Minnesota’s changing population, is an art form that can build bridges. Our community and our music simultaneously welcome the nervous young kid who’s not yet “out” and educate the uncomfortable family member or colleague. Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus is one of the largest GLBT (gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender) organizations in Minnesota, and one of the most prominent performing arts organizations in the state. With a membership of 181 men, TCGMC has grown to be one of the largest and most respected gay men’s choruses in the country and is a member of GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) an international organization of over 200 GLBT- affirming choruses. In 2003, the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus was honored with the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) Minnesota 2003 Brian Coyle Leadership Award for serving the community through outreach and putting a positive face on the GLBT community. 2012 has been a significant year for the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus. The Chorus presented the world premiere of Out of My Range (and Other Age-Related Performance Issues) a new work about intergenerational dynamics within a gay men’s chorus which was performed at the annual GALA Festival of Choruses in Denver. The Chorus is under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Ben Riggs, former Artistic Director of the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus. Don’t forget to attend our annual Holiday Bazaar on Sat, Nov 10,. We will continue to take donations of crafts, bake sale items, and trash ‘n’ treasure items through Wed, Nov 7. We are seeking additional volunteers/helpers; if you can help for several hours or more on Sat, Nov 10, please contact : Carole Winters (Trash ‘n’ Treasure) at 282-8379 or Anne Reick (any other areas) at 252-2088 Fri, Nov 9 Senior Saints Bus Trip to Hubbell House Leave Church @ 11:00am Cost is $5/pp plus the cost of your lunch.
