High School Syllabi and Course Outlines II.A3) Advanced Placement Grade 12- Course Syllabus MATCH Charter Public High School Classes and sports fill the 8:30 AM – 5:00PM school day. In grades 9 and 10, the English focus is on learning how to read critically and how to write short essays. As sophomores, all students receive 100 hours of additional weekend math and English tutoring to prepare for MCAS tests, and the partnership with MIT allows for Summer Academy for those who need. In grades 11 and 12, students concentrate on learning to handle more complex subject matter and learning demands, such as AP History, and AP and Boston University courses. At the nucleus of this success story is the school’s Corps tutoring program. The school hires recent college graduates to work with students for part of every day. Corps members spend a year living in dorms on the top-floor of the school, receive a modest allowance, pay minimal rent, and work with four students throughout the year. 12th Grade English Class AP English Syllabus Advanced Placement English The Course Calendar Dates September 2-October 14 Test: October 14 October 5-November 22 Test November 22 December 1-December 22 Test: December 22 December 23- January 2 Christmas Break December 23- January 2 Christmas Break Whole Works Native Son Richard Wright The Glass Menagerie Tennessee Williams Hedda Gabler Henrick Isben Full-Length Take Home Practice Test (self-timed) Metamorphosis Franz Kafka Themes • • • • • • Naturalistic Character Hubris/Power Questionable Morals Societal Pressure Individual vs. Society/Family Loss of Innocence Escapism Time and Memory Gender and Power Individual vs. Society Questionable Morals 55 Multiple Choice Questions 3 Essays • • • Existensial Question Father-Son Relationship Alienation • • • • • • • 1 Friday, January 13 Full-Length AP Practice Test (timed) January 12- February 3 Daisy Miller Henry James Test: February 7 Friday, March 17 February 9- March 23 Test: March 23 Friday, April 17 March 28-April 18 Full-Length Practice Test (timed) Twelfth Night Shakespeare Full-Length AP Practice Test (timed) Arcadia Tom Stoppard • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Test: April 18 • 55 Multiple Choice Questions 3 Essays Gender and Society American vs. European Culture Appearance vs. Reality 55 Multiple Choice Questions 3 Essays Love Identity Communication and Language Appearance vs. Reality 55 Multiple Choice Questions 3 Essays Free will vs. Determinism Literature vs. Science and math Love and Lust AP English Exam: Thursday, May 4 For related information, see: Section IIB.
