Working:
Priest:
Welcome all to Mabon, the time of the second harvest! The balance of darkness and light is upon us now. I ask you all
to kneel down and touch the Earth, taking a moment to connect with the twin powers of brightness and shadow
within you. Of fear and love. Of comfort and risk. Of gift and sacrifice. Feel all of these disparate parts meeting within
you. Let them dance together, know one another, kiss, then merge. We are calling back that which divides us. That
which says “you can’t have this power.” We call these things back because through the harvest, we know that we
deserve to cultivate the gifts we have earned this year. The very presence and existence of the witch is an act of
sovereignty. For those without, we provide. For those who hunger, we sustain. For those who thirst, we grant the
waters of life. For those with scarcity we give bounty.
[allrise]
[Priest and Priestess take up basket of pomegranates.]
Priest:
The bounty we enjoy is not just our own. In the lore of Our Lady, she has descended down to the Underworld, seeking
the lustful riches of the fertile earth. She descends for love. She descends for curiosity. She descends for courage.
Our lady Persephone passes through the gates of life and death for mystery. For the union of darkness and light,
which are held in balance and equilibrium on this day. The pomegranate is a symbol of these mysteries. For in the
lore, Persephone’s journey binds her to the shade of the Underworld for 6 months after eating only 6 seeds of its
fruit. Showing us that with the sweetness of life, comes the promise of death. But in the promise of death, the
knowledge that we will once again rise, as our Lady does each spring.
Take the pomegranate in your hands and as you hold it, think about what your innermost self is seeking. What is your
primal nature craving? Love? Wisdom? Success? Power? Joy? Pour these seekings into the fruit, this forbidden
fruit of Lord of death and the Lady of riches. Feel yourself sway with the passion of your seeking, back and forth,
allowing yourself to become completely overwhelmed with this wanting. It washes over you like warm soil over a
seed. Let us raise our arms in praise of our Lady.
Priestess:
Persephone! We invoke your aid! Holy Lady of above and below, as you descend to the land of the shades, we call
upon you to draw us ever closer to the mysteries of time, of the harvest, and of desire. We call you on the autumn
wind, on the swaying of the grasses, on the ripening of the grain. We call you by the fruit of the gods. We call you by
cries of your mother, the Queen of the earth. Stand with us in courage and power. Stand with us in love and truth.
Stand with us as we face the darkness before us, not with fear, but with desire. Bless these seeds as the talisman of
our journey. Hail, Persephone!
Priest
Now pluck out 6 seeds and hold them in your mouth, just as our Lady does at this fateful time. Feel the danger of risk.
Feel the bitter richness of the deep earth dancing on your tongue. Bite into them. The seeds crack open and so does
the shell of your former self. The bitter juice casts away banality, cowardice, and all the shackles of the overculture.
This juice is the elixir of of the faery kingdom, the power of witch, and the blood of our ancestors in one.
Priestess
And because we ask for nothing without offering something, I ask you to each approach the altar and leave an
offering of pomegranate juice into the bowl. As you squeeze the fruit with your bare hands, feel this blessing of life,
which was so freely given to us, poured out into the bowl. Squeeze out this love, this gratitude, for the gods, for the
solid earth, and for your own body which sustains you here.
[priest steps forward to squeeze first, then everyone else in turn. When all are done, priestess holds the bowl up to
the sky and says:]
Priestess
Hail to Persephone, Queen of the journey into the dark time of the year!
Hail to Demeter, Queen of our bounty most high!
We give thanks to you, to the land, and to each other
So mote it be!
[apples are passed out]
Priest
The apple is the light twin of the shadowy pomegranate. And as we’ve devoured the fruit of darkness, we also
consume the fruit of life. In ancient lore the apple held the power of immortality. Bite into your apple and feel life
returning at once to your body. This is the rising of Persephone, promised to us each spring. We eat of the fruit of life
with the promise that as the wheel turns to the opposite half, we will do our part to call for Persephone at the start
of spring, that she may find her way home to us. That her mother Demeter will lift the shade of winter from us and cast
us once again into life.
Blessed be.
