The General Instruction of the Missal (GIRM # 110) states: o If only one minister is present at a Mass with a congregation, that minister may exercise several different duties. Sacristan Orchestrates the setup of the credence table with the appropriate materials and objects, as well as specifically fulfills other identified duties in the chapel prior to Mass. • The Sacristan places the tabernacle key in the tabernacle, places Sacramentary book in the chapel, adjusts the AC unit, and lights candles at the altar (After All Souls Day light Easter candle, Advent and Easter candles) in the chapel. Server Assist our priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass particularly during the opening prayer and the set up the altar during the preparation of the gifts. Read a prayer of preparation, prayers for the Minister of the Eucharist or read a scripture. o • Use the Catholic Pocket Prayers Brochure “Prayers for an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion” located inside the priest’s sacristy located next to the ORDO book. If you are not present, this will allow us sufficient time to find a backup. Upon arrival, please check off your name in the sacristy schedule. The schedule is located on the bulletin board in the priest’s sacristy. • If you are substituting for another Minister, please place your name next to their name. Ready to Serve Always Please get in the habit of dressing appropriately to each Mass in case you are asked to serve. Emergencies – Who do you call? We recognize that emergencies do happen. • If you find yourself in this situation, please call me on my cell or home phone numbers. ! The Daily Mass rosters have my phone numbers. Last Revised: 10/25/10 7 Communion Minister Reserved Seat Signs The Communion Minister (CM) reserved seat signs are located in the priest’s sacristy. • The Altar Server and CM reserved seat signs are stored inside a yellow file folder located in the first row of the vertical file folder organizer on the countertop closest to the priest’s closet. For the Tuesday night Mass, the CM should use the set of laminated seat signs that are located inside the red lectern and are stored in a green pocket folder. Lead CM/Sacristan should place the Altar Server(s) and CM(s) reserved seat signs and personal belongings on the chairs in the chapel, so other individuals will not sit in these reserved seats. Parish Building Prayer Lead CM/Sacristan should place a laminated prayer on the following seats: Presider, Altar Server(s), and CM(s). • The laminated parish building prayer cards are located in the small basket on top of the stand next to the baptismal font in the chapel. Chapel Location to Sit in Assembly Sit on the right side of the chapel. CMs will sit on the second row in the two outer chairs on the right. • Lead CM/Sacristan should sit in the assembly on second row on the right side of the chapel. ! Sit on the outer chair of the row closet to the credence table, so you will have easy access to the priest and credence table. Unlock Priest’s Sacristy Door The Lead CM/Sacristan should: • Check the doorknob on the inside of the priest’s sacristy door and unlock it upon arrival for set up. ! Prior to the beginning of Mass, the priest will shut the door. ! By shutting the door, access is minimized into priest’s sacristy during Mass. o However, with the door unlocked, there is flexibility to enter the priest’s sacristy as necessary during Mass. • As the priest recites the intercessions additional hosts or wine can be added as necessary (i.e. when the chapel is full.) The temperature normally is pre-set for 75 degrees. Turn the knob 65 degrees to cool the chapel quickly. The unit will run for two (2) hours, so after Mass you will need to deactivate the AC unit back to its original setting of 75 degrees. ! Be careful when adjusting the thermostat. o Sometimes the flower pollen can rub on your clothes if you get too close to the flower arrangement. Presider’s Chair • Lead CM/Sacristan: There are occasions when a priest, deacon or Arts & Environment Ministry might move the chapel Presider’s chair into the church for a Special Mass; for instance, Holy Week. ! • If the chapel Presider’s chair is not in the chapel, please go inside the church and move the chapel Presider’s chair back into the chapel. On rare occasions, we will have a visiting priest who will be concelebrating at Mass. ! Lead CM/Sacristan, please go to the main church and bring the deacon chair into the chapel. Last Revised: 10/25/10 17 o o Place the first corporal flat at the center of the altar, still folded. Never flick a corporal open in midair, it shows a lack of respect for the most sacred altar linen. • Unfold it, first to your left, then to your right, thus revealing three squares. • Unfold the section farthest from you, away from yourself, thus making six squares visible. Finally, unfold the crease that is nearest to you, towards yourself, thus making all nine squares visible. • o So the steps are Left, Right, Top, Bottom to unfold the corporal Place the Sacramentary book on top of the corporal. • Place book in the center of the altar for Fr. Danny. • Place the book to the left side of the altar for Fr. Uche. ! Do not open the Sacramentary book. o ! Place these items on the altar in the following manner: • o The 2nd chalice is set in front of the priest’s chalice, closer to the assembly. The wine cruet to the right of the 2nd chalice, and then place the purificators closest to the edge of the altar top beside the priest’s chalice. Wait at the altar area. Step 4: 2nd Server: Brings the water cruet, water bowl and towel to the altar. o Drape towel over your wrist, so this frees both your hands to carry the other two vessels (water cruet and water bowl). o 2nd Server hand the water cruet with the cruet handle facing the 1st Server, so they can hand it to the priest. • o ! The priest will adjust as necessary. Step 3: 1st Server: Retrieve 2nd chalice, the wine cruet and three purificators (place on top of the wine cruet to free hands to carry the other two vessels) and place on the altar. o ! Ray Dowling is celebrating Mass, he might take the corporal and place it on the altar himself. • Then he will adjust the Sacramentary book over the corporal. ! • If this happens, just be flexible. Go to the credence table and acquire the other vessels and linens. If Fr. Ray Dowling goes back to the Presider’s chair, then take the corporal to the altar. ! Simply move the Sacramentary book and holder aside on the altar, unfold the corporal on the center of the altar. o Place the Sacramentary book and hold back to the center of the altar on top of the corporal. Priest Washes His Hands When the priest turns towards you the Servers, move towards him so you can provide him the vessels to wash his hands. Last Revised: 10/25/10 19 • The 2nd Server with the water bowl needs to place the bowl underneath his hands, so the 1st Server with the water cruet can pour water over the priest’s hands. ! • The priest then dries his hands with the towel and hands it back to the Server. After the washing of the hands, both Servers need to bow towards the priest and then go towards the credence table. ! Place the water bowl, towel and water cruet on top of the credence table. o The towel does not need to be folded neatly, simply place on the credence table. • This will allow the priest to continue with the celebration of the Mass as soon as the Server(s) return to their seats in the assembly. After Sign of Peace Approach the Altar to Receive Communion • Lead CM/Sacristan and 2nd Cup Minister should approach the altar as soon as you have given and received the sign of peace with those nearest to you. Bow to the Altar CM should not bow when approaching the altar area. Each ciboria holds approximately 250 hosts. • Lead CM/Sacristan should remove the ciboria from the tabernacle for Communion. • Lead CM/Sacristan should genuflect before opening the tabernacle. If you are not able to genuflect, please do a profound bow. ! • • Leave the tabernacle door open during mass. The 2nd Cup Minister should stand still for a moment while the Lead CM approaches the tabernacle. You do not need to bow to the altar or tabernacle, simply stand still. ! The Lead CM/Sacristan should remove the ciboria from the tabernacle. ! As soon as the Lead CM/Sacristan begins to approach the altar with the ciboria, the 2nd Cup Minister should stand closest to the altar and the assembly. The Lead CM/Sacristan will place the ciboria on the altar. Last Revised: 10/25/10 20 ! If you are able to place the ciboria on top of the corporal, you may uncover the ciboria and place the lid next to the silver ox ciboria on the altar. o The ciboria lid does not need to be on the corporal just the ciboria. • ! • Just be sensitive that you do not want to uncover the ciboria and particles of Jesus fall on the altar linen. If you are not able to place the ciboria on top of the corporal and have room only on top of the altar linen, leave the ciboria covered. o The priest will move the ciboria to the corporal. o You do not want to uncover the ciboria if it is not on top of a corporal because particles of Jesus could fall on the altar linen instead on the corporal. Then the Communion Ministers will stand to the right of the altar to receive Communion. Not Removing the Silver Ox Ciboria • Decision was made to consecrate small hosts because the ciboria in the tabernacle had less than half (½) of consecrated hosts. ! • Then the Lead CM/Sacristan DOES NOT take the ciboria from the tabernacle. If the priest needs additional consecrated hosts, he (priest) will go to the tabernacle and remove the ciboria during the distribution of Communion. During Lent, we get more individuals who attend Mass because they are doing it as a Lenten sacrifice. ! During the Friday of a CRHP weekend. The priest makes this decision, so the distribution of Communion can go a lot quicker. ! He might ask or motion to another Daily Mass Communion Minister before or during the Mass to assist him. o The vessel that the extra Host Minister will use will be either the priest’s paten or the ciboria from the tabernacle. • The priest will hand you the sacred vessel with the consecrated hosts, so you simply need to take the sacred vessel that he offers you. ! Once the priest moves to one side of the altar, the Host Minister will walk towards the opposite side of the altar. ! It could vary with each priest, so you simply need to be flexible and follow the priest’s lead. Distribution of Communion Communion Ministers Station Layout in Chapel Back Wall Crucifix X Tabernacle X Priest Chair Ambo Credence Table Altar HM - Priest X - Cup Minister HM - Host Minister Receiving Communion Once the priest moves towards you with the paten or ciboria, bow prior to receiving both the Body and the Blood of Christ. • Ministers will receive the Body of Christ in their hand. ! When serving as a Cup Minister, you must be comfortable receiving in your hand. Cup Minister closest to the priest, will get the priest’s chalice. Last Revised: 10/25/10 22 Priest hands the other Cup Minister the other chalice. • Then the priest will take the priest’s paten and move towards the front of the altar in the center of the aisle to begin to distribute the Body of Christ to the parish community. The two Cup Ministers need to move towards a Communion station. • One station located on the right or the left side of the altar. • Stand towards the back wall of the altar to begin to distribute the Precious Blood. ! This allows the communicants waiting to receive the Precious Blood sufficient space to wait in line. ! Without feeling that there is no space, so they go back to their seat. Interacting While Distributing Communion Remember to have a warm smile and make eye contact when distributing the Blood of Christ. • Be yourself, your smile should be normal and not forced. ! As each person approaches you, look directly at the communicant. Be sincere and inviting as you interact with each person. Process for Administering the Body of Christ Administering the Body of Christ Hold the sacred vessel in your left hand (opposite for left-handed persons), and taking the host in the right hand hold it for the communicant to see and say, “The Body of Christ.” • To which the communicant replies, “Amen.” Depending upon the wishes of the communicant, the Host Minister places the Body of Christ in the communicants hand or on the tongue. • Most communicants receive in their hand. Host Not Consumed By Communicant If you see someone has not consumed the consecrated host, be sensitive to the individual if you address the issue. • Presider’s suggestion is to let him know about the situation after Mass, so he can address with the person. Host Falls on the Floor If a consecrated host falls on the floor, pick it up and consume it. • It may be a bit difficult to swallow the consecrated host being that you will not have any Precious Blood to help swallow it. Last Revised: 10/25/10 23 ! You might want to wait until after distributing Communion to consume it. • Thus, another solution is to place it on your hand under your ciboria or paten. ! • Once you finish distributing Communion, you may consume it. The only time a consecrated host ought to be disposed in the sacrarium is if it has fallen out of someone’s mouth. ! Use extra purificator at the altar to pick up the consecrated hosts and wait until after Communion to dispose the consecrated host in the sacrarium in the priest sacristy. Extending a Blessing to an Adult or Children Individuals who come towards you during Communion with their hands crossed in front of their chest. • Sometimes they do not come with this posture, so be prepared, like toddlers and infants. Do not make a sign of the cross when doing a blessing. This gesture is for a priest or deacon. ! You may extend your hand toward the person as you whisper/say the words: May God bless you. Process for Administering the Blood of Christ Administering the Precious Blood Hold the chalice for the communicant and say, “The Blood of Christ.” The communicant replies, “Amen.” • The Communion Minister says “The Blood of Christ” when distributing the Precious Blood. ! No Communion Minister who distributes Holy Communion may modify these words. (GIRM #161) The minister then gives the chalice to the communicant who takes it entirely into his/her hands, drinks from it and returns it to the minister. Use your purificator to wipe clean (inside and outside) the rim of the chalice after each communicant drinks from it, and turn it a quarter (1/4) turn each time before the next communicant. If the priest heads towards the assembly to give Communion to a communicant who cannot walk towards the altar, please be attentive. • You might need to follow the priest, so you can offer the communicant the Precious Blood. • At times, the Cup Minister closest to the communicant who cannot walk may not be able to offer the precious blood if there is a line at his/her station. • If the other Cup Minister is available (no communicants waiting in line), please assist by following the priest to offer the Precious Blood to the communicant who cannot walk. However, the person might also be from another parish and they are simply visiting. o If you noticed that this person is visiting our parish often, the priest may still need to address with this person. If this does occur, use your purificator as a Communion paten and hold beneath the chin of the communicant until the communicant places the consecrated bread with Precious Blood in their mouth. • By using your purificator as a Communion paten, this will minimize the chances of Precious Blood dripping onto the floor. Spillage Spillage of Precious Blood of Christ on the Floor If you drop or spill the Precious Blood – DO NOT PANIC! Be reverent as to how you react. Your demeanor will reassure those communicants in line or the person who may have caused the spill. • Delay the Communion line as little as possible. A drop or few drops are spilled to the floor. • Use your purificator to cover the spill and leave the purificator flat on the floor. ! If you need both hands for the cleanup, please place the chalice on the altar first. Go to the altar and get another purificator. • Continue to distribute the Precious Blood. • Leave the purificator on the floor, to be aware where the drops spilled on the floor. If chalice is empty, place your purificator over the top of the chalice, so communicants know that you do not have any more Precious Blood. ! You may direct those communicants to the other Communion Minister who is on the tabernacle side. ! Remain standing at your station and wait for the other Cup Minister on the tabernacle side to finish distributing the Precious Blood. It would be more reverent if you simply stand in place and wait.
