In support of the JU BSN program, the Department of Biology and Marine Science provides 4 biology courses:
Biol 221 Nutrition
Biol 222 Microbiology for Health Professionals
Biol 215 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
Biol 216 Human Anatomy and Physiology II

These online courses have been developed by faculty here at JU in Jacksonville, Florida, and our online courses
are taught by faculty here on campus or have taught here on campus. Our goal is to deliver high quality online
courses that are as equivalent as possible to the traditional face to face in-person classes, which is a huge
challenge, particularly in regards to the laboratory courses.
For the lab courses, you must purchase laboratory materials directly from Hands on Lab
(http://www.holscience.com) The LabPaqs include extensive safety information (including video), and robust
customer support for you to use. Some of these materials are used in more than one of the lab courses, as
indicated below, so be sure to retain and reuse these materials:

* AP-1-CAT Labpaq contains a cat that is used for dissections in both Biol 215 and 216. You should keep the
cat from AP-1-CAT to use in Biol 216, and also purchase AP-2C-CAT for Biol 216. If you do not have the cat
from AP-1-CAT, then purchase AP-2-CAT for Biol 216 since it does contain a cat.
Be advised that the LabPaq for Biol 215 contains a preserved skinned cat, a preserved sheep brain, and a
preserved cow eye, and the LabPaq for Biol 216 contains a preserved sheep heart and preserved sheep kidney,
all of which you will dissect (you will continue to use the cat in Biol 216). These dissections are an important
component of these courses, and are required in order to ensure equivalency with our in-person face to face
courses here on campus. It may be off-putting to some of you that you will be dissecting these in your home,
but be assured that these LabPaqs are used extensively and come with safety protocols and precautions; the
materials are safe and non-toxic when handled according to instructions.

Some of the items that you purchase and use in these courses should be useful long after these courses are
completed. For example, AP-1-CAT has a nice model of a human skeleton (about 2’ tall), and the microscope
that is used for the three lab courses will allow you to investigate the microscopic world for many years
afterword. These items have the potential to enrich your lives long past the courses and should be useful for in
the dissemination of science amongst family and friends (dinner parties, science fairs, etc.), as well as
continuing education, something we are very pleased about.
