Try Parking It E-Blast
May 2014
National Bike Month
May is an exciting time for most North Texans. The
temperatures finally warm up, summer is on the way, and
school is about to end for the year. The weather is usually
pleasant enough to be outdoors too. How convenient
then that it also happens to be National Bike Month.
The League of American Bicyclists says more than half of
the U.S. population live within five miles of their
workplace, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to
get to work. With increased interest in healthy,
sustainable, and economic transportation options, it's
not surprising that, from 2000 to 2011, the number of
bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 47
percent. So why not make the commitment and bike to
work on Friday, May 16, National Bike to Work Day?
Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is also celebrating
National Bike Month by hosting six "bike energizer
stations" from 7:00 am - 9:30 am on Friday, May 16. The
stations will have information about local bicycle issues, along with free promotional
items, refreshments and tune-ups. Visit the festivities at the Trinity Mills Station,
Downtown Garland Station, St. Paul Station, Arapaho Center Station, Las Colinas Urban
Center Station, and at the intersection of the Bluebonnet and Chisholm Trails in Plano
(near Jack Carter Dog Park). Bikes are permitted on any DART vehicle and all Trinity
Railway Express trains. Don't forget to log your commute at TryParkingIt.com, it only
takes a few minutes. Want to tell a friend about Try Parking It? Send them our YouTube
video for details on the program!
Be Prepared for Ozone Season
Even though ozone season started in March for residents of North Texas, the region saw
temperatures on the cool side up until recent weeks. May is usually when warmer
temperatures bring the first Air Pollution Action Days to our region, so stay informed.
Log on to www.airnorthtexas.org to receive Air Pollution Action Day alerts, read about
current air quality levels, and learn about what steps you can take to reduce your impact
on the environment.
New Park-and-Ride Facility
Commuters will soon have an alternative to driving one of the most congested freeways
in Tarrant County. The new Express Route 63 bus service, located between Heritage Trace
and Golden Triangle Blvd., will provide three morning and three late afternoon non-stop
trips Monday through Friday, to and from downtown Fort Worth. There will also be
connecting bus service to other Fort Worth destinations and to the Trinity Railway
Express for service to the Mid-Cities and Dallas. Express Route 63 will remain free
through Friday, May 30 to encourage commuters to try it. Parking is free for vehicles of

riders at The T's Park and Ride facilities. Express Route 63 will drop off riders along
Houston Street, prior to its downtown stop at the Intermodal Transportation Center
(ITC). Visit the Fort Worth Transporta on Authority's website for details.
Arlington MAX
Last year, the City of Arlington
began bus services with the new
Metro Arlington Xpress
(MAX). This public transportation
option was the first of its kind in
Arlington and allows residents to
explore attractions in Dallas, Fort
Worth, and other locations
throughout the North Texas region.
MAX day passes cost $5, allowing
round trip rides on the MAX and
TRE, with access to DART and The
T systems as well. The buses make
regular trips between the College Park Center at UT Arlington and the TRE's
CentrePort/DFW Airport Station Monday through Friday from
6 am - 10 pm. The MAX's website has a wealth of information on services, including maps,
times, and ticket information.
Upcoming Events
DART
May 24: Rowlett Memorial Day Ceremony featuring Touch-A-Truck is coming Saturday,
May 24 from 10 am - 1 pm. The City of Rowlett comes together to honor the brave men
and women who dedicated their lives to preserve our freedom. Citizens, friends, and
family can meet at Veteran's Park at 10 am to pay homage to our fallen soldiers. This
special day continues with Touch-A-Truck, a fun and educational opportunity for children
of all ages to touch, climb on, and explore over 25 trucks lined up and down Main Street.
There will be a fire truck, ambulance, 18 wheeler, school bus, and more! In the case of
inclement weather, the event will be held on Monday, May 26. Information:
www.rowlett.com. Service is available via DART Blue Line to Downtown Rowlett
Station, then a short walk to Main Street.
May 24: The City of Farmers Branch presents "Stars & Strings," a new event featuring a
concert by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra followed by a spectacular low-level fireworks
finale. Families can join in to celebrate liberty and honor our country and the men and
women who've served. The gates of the Farmers Branch Historical Park will open that
evening to include music, food trucks, fireworks, and a tribute to our nation's heroes.
Attendees can bring their lawn chairs and blankets and spread out in the meadow to
enjoy an evening under the stars. Admission is free. The Farmers Branch Historical Park is
located at 2540 Farmers Branch Lane. Information: www.farmersbranchtx.gov. Service is
available via DART Green Line to Farmers Branch Station.
Through June 15: Alexandre Hogue: The Erosion Series presents the erosion works and
supporting drawings for several of the paintings, allowing visitors to observe the
evolution of Hogue's creative process from conception to completion. Alexandre Hogue's
deep concern for environmental issues was a catalyst for the creation of a body of works
that spanned the entirety of his career. The land-management failures that spawned the
devastation of the dust-bowl decade of the 1930s became the inspiration for some of the
artist's most powerful imagery. Works such as the Dallas Museum of Art's own DrouthStricken Area served as an alarm to the public and an accusation, through encouraging
poor farming practices, had helped to produce the greatest agricultural disaster in
American history. The Dallas Museum of Art is located at 1717 N. Harwood. Information:
www.dallasmuseumofart.org. Service available via DART Rail Red Line, Blue Line, Green
Line or Orange Line to St. Paul Station.
