ABOUT THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
The MAC was formed more than 70 years ago as a loose
confederation of colleges and universities before being
unified into an actual playing conference in 1952.
In 1993 the MAC saw significant change in organization
and administration. The MAC is now comprised of two
conferences, the Freedom and the Commonwealth, and
will compete in all sports. Also, the MAC operates under
the leadership of an executive committee consisting of
two presidents from each conference.
Members of the Freedom Conference areDeSales, Delaware Valley, Drew, FDU-Florham,
King's, Lycoming, Scranton, and Wilkes. Members
of the Commonwealth Conference are-Albright, Elizabethtown, Juniata, Lebanon Valley, Messiah, Moravian,
Susquehanna, and Widener.
The MAC Freedom Conference and Commonwealth
Conference champions will both receive automatic
berths to the NCAA Tournament.

HEAD COACH JERRY RICKRODE
In a span of 13 years coach Jerry Rickrode has taken
the Wilkes men's basketball program from a struggling
squad to a contender for an NCAA championship. During
that time Rickrode has quickly ascended near the top of the
NCAA Division III list of winningest coaches by percentage.
His mark of .754 ranks him among the winningest coaches
in Division III with at least ten years experience.
Under Rickrode Wilkes has made six appearances in
the NCAA Tournament, including a Final Four berth inn
1998, and Elite Eight appearances in 1995 and 1996. The
Colonels have also won at least 20 games during seven of his seasons as head mentor.
Rickrode was honored by the NABC (National Assoc. of Basketball Coaches) as its MidAtlantic Regional Coach of the Year after the 2000-01, 1998-99, 1997-98 and 1995-96 seasons.
Rickrode has been named the Freedom Coach of the Year following the 1994-95, 1996-97
and 2000-01 seasons.
Rickrode came to Wilkes after spending four years as a full-time assistant at Ithaca (NY)
College where he was in charge of coordinating recruiting and scouting, along with assisting
at practices and floor coaching during games. In addition, Rickrode directed the pre-season
and in-season strength and conditioning programs and was a full-time instructor in the
Health and Human Performance Department.
Prior to Ithaca, Rickrode was an assistant at Utica College in 1987, a graduate assistant
at Ithaca in 1986, and head freshman coach at Skidmore (NY) College in 1985.
Rickrode is a graduate of Skidmore College with a degree in Biology and Physical Education and from Ithaca College with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education.
At Skidmore, Rickrode earned NAIA Basketball Academic All-America recognition. He
was also named the school's senior athlete of the year in 1985 after establishing Skidmore
standards for points and assists in a season and for career field goal percentage. Rickrode,
his wife Kathy, daughter Jordyn, and son Christian, reside in Hanover Township.

coach with the Wilkes men’s basketball team. Witcoskie also
serves as the Intramural Director at Wilkes.
Witcoskie is a 2001 graduate of Susquehanna University,
where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in

a senior.
During the 2003-04 season Witcoskie served as an assistant coach at Susquehanna, where he was involved in
every aspect of the program. Witcoskie’s responsibilities included recruiting, scouting,
practice and game coaching, the individual development of the Crusaders guards and
the implementation of a new weight training program. While at Susquehanna Witcoskie also served as the Junior Varsity basketball coach and was the Assistant Camp
Director.
ASSISTANT COACH BRYAN McGRAW
McGraw is in his seventh year as an assistant coach for
the Colonels. A graduate of nearby King's College where he
spent three seasons as a player for the Monarchs, McGraw
came to Wilkes after a one-year stint as an assistant at Division I College of Charleston. While at Charleston, McGraw
was part of a program that was ranked in the top-25 throughout the season, earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament,
and notched a victory over the University of North Carolina.
Prior to his experience at Charleston, McGraw spent one year
as an assistant at Marywood University, and also served as a
student assistant for the King's women's program.
McGraw, who received his master's degree in School Administration from the University of Scranton, is currently an administrator in the Scranton School District. He

MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Wilkes University men’s basketball team will open their 2005-06 season
on Friday, November 18th, when they travel to Clarkson University to participate in the
North Country Invitational. The Colonels will take on SUNY Potsdam in a first round
game at 6:00 p.m.
Wilkes has 11 veterans returning from last season’s squad that fashioned an
overall record of 15-10 and qualified for the Freedom Conference playoffs. The Colonels
have been selected as the conference favorite coming into the year in a balloting of the
conference’s coaches. They were also ranked tenth in Division III in the pre-season by
Street & Smith Magazine.
“This team has a little bit of a different look,” commented head coach Jerry
Rickrode. “We are a lankier team and cover space better than we have in the past. We
are also going to have a more defined rotation of eight or nine players, which we have
not had in the last three or four years. The players roles have been defined and thus
far they have accepted those roles and bought into the philosophy.”
Sophomore guard Chris Shovlin leads a host of talented players in the
backcourt. Shovlin, who transferred to Wilkes after spending one semester at Division
I Monmouth, played in 18 contests as a freshman, including 15 as a starter. He led
the Colonels in scoring averaging 18.8 points per game. Shovlin also contributed 4.2
rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.8 steals per game.
“Chris seems to be much more at ease and his teammates are more comfortable with him this season since he has been with us from day one,” stated Rickrode.
“He really creates a problem for opposing defenses at both the point guard and wing
spots. He is extremely quick and can stretch a defense. We are looking for him to have
a big year.”
Senior Michael Constantine and sophomore Matt Gould will also see ample
playing time at the guard positions. Constantine started 17 games last season and
averaged 9.6 points per game. He also connected on 49 three-point field goals and shot
41.5 percent from behind the arc. Gould played in all 25 games as a rookie, including
seven as a starter. He contributed five points and 1.6 assists.
Senior guards Drew Amoroso and John Sclafani are among five other guards
who will vie for playing time. They are joined by sophomore Jeremy Kable and freshmen Coleman Williams and Keith Bradley.
“Mike Constantine has improved more from last season to this season than
any player we have,” said Rickrode. “He has changed himself physically thanks to
a strict conditioning program that he followed during the off-season. He is a great
shooter from the two-guard spot,
who can also slide over to the
point. Matt Gould has solidified
himself as someone who will see a
lot of playing time. He is the best
on the ball defender that we have
and can really change a game
with his intensity. Matt is relentless and tough and has really
matured in a year. Drew Amoroso
is probably the best leader I have
had at Wilkes. He has performed
extremely well during the pre-season and may find some time. We
are also expecting some big contributions from Jeremy Kable this
season, as well as Keith Bradley,
whom I feel has one of the bigger
up-sides.”
Senior Greg Cardamone,
sophomore David Goode and
freshman Steve Kline are in a
battle for the two starting berths
Sophomore guard Chris Shovlin averaged 18.8
points per game in 18 contests as a freshman.

at forward. Cardamone started 17 of 23 games he appeared in a year ago and averaged 4.4 points and 5.2 rebounds. Goode saw increased playing time as the season
progressed a year ago. In 18 games Goode chipped in an average of 2.9 points and
1.7 rebounds. Kline averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game during his
senior season at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. Junior Dan Adams, who averaged 1.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 19 games last season, could also push for playing
time, while freshman Brandon Edelstein will add depth.
“Cardamone is a work horse for us at 6-6, 235 pounds. He has worked
hard during the off-season to get better. Greg is a nuts and bolts guy who is an
excellent screener and is finishing better in the post area. David Goode has put on
some solid weight that is really going to help him. At 6-6 he has great leaping skills
and his overall skill level has improved. Steve Kline is an excellent rebounder and
defender who is extremely sound fundamentally. He won’t be asked to do a lot of
scoring for us right away, but has the ability to knock down open looks. I could also
see Dan Adams in that nine-man rotation. He is a great guy to call on when you
want to raise the intensity level. He is a good worker and has experience.”
Senior Evan Walters is back as the Colonels starter at center. Walters
enjoyed an outstanding junior season when he averaged 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds
and had a conference-leading 64 blocked shots. Freshman Andrew Durako and
junior Tyler Jenkins will back up Walters at center.
“I feel that Evan Walters is different from an other player in the Freedom
Conference,” stated Rickrode. “At 6-8 he can get up and down the floor like a guard,
which makes him unique. He is a distraction defensively because he is always in
good help position. With the additional size around him this season, we are hoping
to be able to keep Evan out of foul trouble. If we can do that I think he will be more
productive on the offensive end. I also feel very strongly about Andrew Durako at
the center position. He is really a player in the making and can make a real contribution to this team.”
When asked about goals for the upcoming season Rickrode said that the
team’s goals rarely change from season to season. “I think that we have always gone
into a season with the expectation of winning a conference
championship. I believe that
this year’s team is going to be
able to score. We can push
the ball up the floor and our
guards are very quick. At the
forward and center spots we
have the ability to run the
floor and finish. I feel that we
are better athletically than
we have been in quite some
time. We are going to be able
to play some different types of
defenses, which is something
that we haven't been able to
do in recent years."
"This team is going
to be a fun and exciting team
to be around," concluded
Rickrode. "There is excellent leadership in place with
our four seniors, and the
guys really love the game of
basketball. That is a great
quality to have if you want to
be successful."
Senior guard Michael Constantine drilled a team-leading .415
percent of his three-point attempts last season.

GREATEST GAMES AT WILKES
FEBRUARY 26, 1996
MAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The Colonels captured their first MAC
championship with a decisive 71-49 victory over the Crusaders of Susquehanna.
Trailing 12-0 to start the game, Wilkes
outscored the Crusaders 71-37 over the
final 36 minutes of play. Seniors Matt
LaBuda and Jason Turner scored 26 and
23 points respectively to pace Wilkes. The
win capped an unprecedented clean sweep
of the MAC for the Colonels, who finished
18-0 against league competition.
MARCH 2, 1996
NCAA SECOND ROUND
In what may go down as the greatest
comeback in small college basketball history, Wilkes erased a nine-point deficit with
0:43 left in regulation to send the game into
overtime, and then went on to top Cabrini
College, 96-91, before a packed house in
the Marts Center. Sophomore guard Jay
Williams saved the Colonels season by
burying four three-pointers in the final 0:
43. His heroics earned him a spot on ESPN
Sportscenter. Senior Chris Parker sealed
the Colonels win by hitting four straight
free throws in the overtime period.
FEBRUARY 28, 1998
MAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The Colonels claimed their second MAC
title in three years by disposing of the
University of Scranton, 83-75, in front of a
capacity crowd at the Marts Center. Wilkes controlled the game from the outset,
building a double-digit lead with just under
three minutes remaining in the contest.
Five Wilkes players scored in double
figures, led by senior Mike Barrouk, who
finished with 20 points. Sophomore Dave
Jannuzzi added 19 points, while junior
Scott Cleveland came off the bench to put
together a double-double with 11 points
and 14 rebounds.
MARCH 13, 1998
NCAA SWEET SIXTEEN
Wilkes, making its third Sweet Sixteen
appearance in four seasons, held off Rowan
University, 83-80, in double overtime to
once again advance to the Elite Eight.
Five Colonels scored in double figures,
with sophomores Dave Jannuzzi and Chad
Fabian, and senior Mike Barrouk each
finishing with 16 tallies.
MARCH 14, 1998
NCAA ELITE EIGHT
A weekend of basketball that the Wyoming
Valley will not soon forget came to a close as
Wilkes earned their first-ever berth in the
NCAA Division III Final Four with a heart-stopping 58-55 win over Hunter College. Wilkes,
which trailed by as many as 16 points in the
contest, cut the lead to nine at the half thanks
to a basket by sophomore Dave Jannuzzi at the
conclusion of the first period.
The Colonels came out of the halftime locker
room with a rejuvenated attack. The Colonels
held Hunter, which came into the game riding
a 26-game winning streak, to just 22 points in
the second stanza. Junior Brian Gryboski and
senior Mike Barrouk both tossed in 21 points
to lead Wilkes to the win. The victory, before
a capacity crowd at the Marts Center, not only
secured a spot in the Final Four, but also capped
an unforgettable 17-0 record at home for the
Colonels.
FEBRUARY 27, 1999
MAC CHAMPIONSHIP
Wilkes won their second straight MAC title
and third in four years by posting a 66-51 win at
Lebanon Valley.
The Colonels used a 25-8 run during a ten
minute stretch of the second half to blow the
game open. Chad Fabian, who finished with
25 points and six steals, scored 10 of his points
during the decisive run. Fellow guard Dave
Jannuzzi chiped in with 20 points for Wilkes.
The Colonels held Lebanon Valley's 6-9
forward Andy Panko, a Division III Player of
the Year candidate, to just 15 points and six
rebounds in the game. As a unit the Wilkes
defense held Lebanon Valley to just 41 percent
shooting from the field.
FEBRUARY 24, 2001
FREEDOM CHAMPIONSHIP
The Colonels captured the Freedom Conference title by knocking off Scranton, 86-81, in
the title tilt.
Wilkes trailed 36-31 in the first half before
closing the period with a 10-3 run. Tom Stambaugh had five points, Brad Sechler had three
and Kevin Walsh had two during the spurt. The
Colonels never trailed again in the contest.
Stambaugh and Dave Jannuzzi led Wilkes
with 19 points each. Jannuzzi also finished with
11 assists. Sechler and Walsh each chipped in
with 18 tallies for the Colonels.
