Guidelines for Reviewers Academy of Management Journal (AMJ)

Theory
 Does the paper have a well-articulated theory that provides conceptual insight
and guides hypotheses formulation?
 Equally important, Does the study inform or improve our understanding of
theory?
 Are the concepts clearly defined?
Literature
 Does the paper cite appropriate literature and provides proper credit to existing
work on the topic?
 Have you offered critical references that the author has missed?
 Does the paper contain an appropriate number of reference (e.g., neither over- or
under-referencing does not occur)?
Method
 Do the sample, measures, methods, observation, procedures, and statistical
analyses ensure internal and external validity?
 Are the statistical procedures used correctly and appropriately?
 Are the statistics major assumptions reasonable (i.e., no major violations)?
 Does the empirical study provide a good test of the theory and hypotheses?
 Is the method chosen (qualitative or quantitative) appropriate for the research
question and theory?
Contribution
 Does the paper make a new and meaningful contribution to the management
literature in terms of all three: theory, empirical knowledge, and management
practice?
Citation
 In your review finally, have you given proper reference or citation to the original
source of the comments that you write in the review, if they are taken from
others’ work, or even your own?
Helpful Hints for Reviewing for Academy of Management Review (AMR)
 Does the paper create, extend or advance management theory in a significant way?
 Is the topic important and interesting? Does the manuscript pass the “so what” test?
 Are the central constructs defined clearly? Are the underlying causal mechanisms behind
proposed relationships explained clearly?
 Are underlying assumptions clearly recognized and discussed?
 Does the manuscript contain a well-developed and articulated theoretical framework?
 Do the propositions (if applicable) logically flow from the theory?
 Is relevant literature cited accurately? If relevant literature is missing, can you point the
authors toward that literature?
 Does the paper have clear implications for future research?
 Is the paper’s contribution commensurate with its length?
The Academy of Management is committed to advancing theory, research, education, and practice
in the field of management. The Academy publishes five journals, each of which broadly
contributes to this objective while emphasizing a particular scholarly aspect of it. Articles
published in the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) empirically examine theory-based
knowledge. The Academy of Management Review (AMR) provides a forum to explicate
theoretical insights and developments. The Academy of Management Learning and Education
(AMLE) provides a forum to examine learning processes and management education.
The Academy of Management Perspectives (AMP) publishes accessible articles about important
issuesconcerning management and business. The Academy of Management Annals provides
up-to-date, comprehensive examinations of the latest advances in various management fields.
Each volume features critical research reviews written by leading management scholars. In
addition to our journals, AOM publishes a newsletter, and our annual meeting Best Papers
Proceedings, both of which are available in electronic format.
The Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) is the
flagship empirical journal in management, and has

The Academy of Management Perspectives
(AMP) publishes articles and symposia that address

focus on evidence rather than the development of
theory.
