Positional Release is the positioning of either the whole body or a body area in such a way as to evoke a therapeutic response to help resolve musculoskeletal dysfunction. You will learn how to position the client so that muscles are off-stretch or slackened, eliciting a neuromuscular response which releases hypertonicity, spasm, and pain. In this position, treatment to trigger points is administered with maximal effectiveness and minimal discomfort. This technique is both user and patient friendly. Each of the following three workshops is stand alone and may be taken independently. By taking the series of all three workshops, you will have a solid understanding and the technical proficiency to work effectively with Positional Release techniques.
Positional Release I: Postural Muscles

Positional Release I: Postural Muscles
The theory and principles of Positional Release work will be presented. The majority of the workshop will be spent learning and practicing the application of Positional Release techniques to the postural muscles. You will practice the clinical approach of assessment, treatment and re-assessment.
Positional Release II: Jones Tender Points
In this workshop the theory and principles of Positional Release work will be reviewed. You will learn how to use PR techniques to address tender points throughout the body. The release of these specific points can be effective to reduce pain and increase range of motion of the related body region. We will explore the application of PR to relieve the pain resulting from conditions such as whiplash, low back pain, thoracic and cervical pain, as well as pain related to scoliosis, osteoporosis and facet joint impingement.

“I call my approach to investigating body structure ‘The Spirit of Anatomy.’ Knowledge of anatomy is important to me only when it makes my work more engaging -- when it helps me help a client or myself. Approaching the body experientially, and tying concepts to sensations, stretches and treatments, helps us take anatomy by the tail and set it in the direction we need it to go. Energetic and spiritual aspects of anatomy and cross-cultural approaches such as the chakra system enrich our way of seeing the self and using our bag of tricks for approaching health and its opposite. For me, this is the true spirit of anatomy, and my reason for teaching it.” - George Russell

The Ankle and Knee, June 28
The ankle and knee are multi-use, complex joints that absorb a lot of the stresses of the body and provide its foundation. We'll learn some anatomy, discuss syndromes, and work on improving our own bodies in our work, as well as the bodies of our clients who present with leg difficulty.
Beyond Rubbing the Hurt, October 4
From patient complaint to bodywork strategies, it's great to rub shoulders when they hurt. But we can help more if we can learn to look under the surface of client complaint to the syndromes that give rise to patient's difficulty and create pain. We'll discuss compensation strategies in general and specific, referral pain, postural pain and dysfunction, and other situations where the problem and the pain are found in different places. Postural analysis, interpreting client language, and ways to talk to clients about their issues will all be presented and workshopped.

The therapeutic relationship between the massage therapist and their client is intimate and unique. We often work with people in non-ordinary states of consciousness when boundary issues of separateness and connectedness become very important. Whether we are a new graduate or a seasoned practitioner, we are frequently confronted with a range of ethical dilemmas that arise within the context of the therapeutic relationship. This workshop will use the National Certification Board’s Ethical Standards and Practice Guidelines as a filter through which we will explore ethical issues and define ethical wellness. Bring: Linens for healing to begin using Intuition, Bone Washing, Po’o (cranial head massage),
Ho'oponopono and the Aloha breath to create spaces within the body for opening and healing. Madeline will be sharing the secrets of the Hawaiian Kahuna Healer Harry Uhane Jim who has graciously encouraged us to pass these secrets on for personal and planetary growth and healing.
Madeline L. Dusky earned her B.S. degree in Alternative Health from the University of New Hampshire. She has been a licensed massage therapist in Ohio since 1988. Madeline has continued her education in stress/pain reduction at the University Of Massachusetts Medical Center with Jon Kabat-Zinn and is certified by Dr. Herbert Benson in the clinical training program at the Mind/Body Medical Institute in Boston, Mass. Madeline founded a Fibromyalgia Support Group at the Monadnock Community
Hospital, in New Hampshire. The insights and needs of her clients and group members contributed a great deal of the information that is presented in her Fibromyalgia seminar. Madeline’s studies with spiritual/ traditional healers in Central America, Mexico and Hawaii have contributed to and enlivened the Lomi-Lomi course that she has been teaching for over 10 years.
This workshop is designed to help you understand and work with those clients who have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia/Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Post Traumatic Fibromyalgia. FMS affects approximately 5 million people nationwide, 80-85% of whom are women. You will learn to identify the 18 FMS tender points, differentiate between Fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, and understand the powerful effect neurotransmitters have on those with Fibromyalgia. You will be introduced to massage techniques and positions that are tolerable to most patients. You will learn methods to help those patients with self-care management such as exercise, meditation and self massage. Many of the self help exercises can be incorporated into your own lifestyle.
See Madeline’s bio under “Lomi Lomi.”
