Seneca College of
Applied Arts and
Technology
Winter 2014
Dear Seneca Student,
On behalf of the School of English and Liberal Studies, welcome to Seneca College!
In order to be successful in your program and in your career, you will need to
communicate clearly and effectively. You will also be expected to organize and analyze
information, work with others, and understand how your field of study fits into the
broader world of today. English and Liberal Studies subjects will help you do that. They
will fulfill the English and Liberal Studies requirements that are part of all diploma
programs.
They also will expand your horizons, stretch your mind, and give you the opportunity to
look at the world in different ways. Whether you choose literature, philosophy,
languages, psychology, the visual arts or music, you will gain knowledge and transferable
skills that will serve you well for the rest of your life. We offer a diversity of subjects
both in the classroom and online.
On the other side of this letter, you will find important information you need to know.
You can learn more about English and Liberal Studies by going to our website at
http://els.senecacollege.ca or by contacting one of our coordinators.
We look forward to meeting you in our classes or online during the months ahead.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Schmitz, Ph.D

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
ABOUT ENGLISH AND LIBERAL STUDIES REQUIREMENTS
http://els.senecacollege.ca
WEEK ONE
Your classes begin officially on Monday, January 6, 2014. Late arrival puts your academic success at risk and may result in you missing key
opportunities and deadlines. Please note that the deadline to change or add a subject is Day 5.
ENGLISH
Once you have been accepted as a Seneca student, you will take an English Skills Assessment.
(This is not the same test you may have done when you first applied to your program.)
Book an appointment right away at 416-491-5050 ext. 26868 or Skills.Assessment@senecacollege.ca.
Please note that if your assessment is not done by Day 5, you will lose your English class and any other subject requiring English
(APC100, PSY204, BIO173).
The English Skills Assessment will determine if you are
 granted exemption from EAC150 (College English), or
 required to take EAC150, or
 required to take EAC149 before you can take EAC 150, or
 required to take EAP330 or EAP300 (English for Academic Purposes) before you can take EAP 500, then EAC150.
To graduate, you need to complete EAC150 (College English) or be granted exemption on the basis of your English Skills Assessment. Most
diploma programs also require Business or Technical Writing.
ELECTIVES
You must take three elective subjects before you graduate. Generally, students do not take electives during their first semester. Electives are
classified in two streams: Literature and Liberal Studies. To graduate from a diploma program, you must take three electives: one literature
elective (designated EAC or SES); one liberal studies elective from any of the following areas: Cultural Studies, Social Sciences, Natural
Sciences, Canadian Studies; and one elective from either the Literature or Liberal Studies stream. Full listings are on our website at ►Subjects
N.B: ILU students require four electives: two of the electives must be literature.
CREDIT FOR POST-SECONDARY STUDIES
You may be able to use credits from other college or university courses to satisfy English and Liberal Studies requirements. Pick up an
Advanced Standing form from the Registration Office and follow the instructions there or on our website.
N.B. Your application will be processed after receipt of your English Skills Assessment result.
ONLINE SUBJECTS
If you prefer an alternative to classroom instruction, some of our subjects are offered online or in hybrid mode (part in class, part online) over
the Internet. For more information, please visit http://els.senecacollege.ca.
USE SIRIS TO REGISTER AFTER FIRST SEMESTER
Be sure you learn to use Seneca’s online registration system called SIRIS. SIRIS will tell you whether you need to add an English and/or
