Basics 1: Kimberlites - the nature of kimberlite magmas, emplacement processes, terminology and classification schemes as used in exploration and the development of economic geological models (see example outline over). Basics 2: Kimberlites and Related Rocks – common rock types encountered during diamond exploration, their recognition and diamond potential. Further in-depth courses cover specific topics or regions. Examples: different emplacement products like tuffisitic kimberlites, other rock types such as lamproites, practical aspects such as logging or point counting, case studies on individual bodies or geographic areas such as the Canadian Prairies, southern Africa or the diverse ‘related rocks‘ of Montana. Additional kimberlite experts can address different topics. Who should attend: Anyone in the diamond industry. Courses can be tailored to different lengths and viewpoints for specific audiences: exploration and mining geologists, kimberlite geologists, managers and non-geologists. KIMBERLITE GEOLOGY THE FOUNDATION OF DIAMOND MINING AND EXPLORATION Unique opportunities to learn about kimberlites Coach: Barbara Scott Smith, P.Geo., shares over 30 years of worldwide kimberlite geology experience. After completing a Ph.D. on alnoites and lamproites from Greenland, several years were spent working for De Beers based in South Africa. As an independent consultant since 1982, Barbara has completed projects in Australia, India, Russia, China, USA, Europe, Brazil, other parts of Africa, and most kimberlite fields across Canada. Research involvement continues as Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia and as a co-leader of the IAVCEI Kimberlite Commission. Barbara co-convened the 8th International Kimberlite Conference and was Guest Editor of the proceedings volume. For further information contact Barbara Scott Smith North Vancouver, B.C., Canada “Hands On”: Through the examination of rocks on all scales, microscopic to megascopic, participants gain a practical understanding of the diverse topics covered and their application to real-world situations. The rocks are placed into context through lectures, handouts, reprints, posters, tests, exercises, topic reviews and discussions. Additional coaching can be based on client projects, topical workshops or by preparing papers, reports and presentations. Rock Collection: The ever growing rock collection includes over 3000 samples from more than 10 countries and one full drillcore. Most major diamond mining areas and more than 100 bodies from across Canada are represented. Dedicated Facility: The North Vancouver facility comprises a warehouse for sample/drillcore storage and layout. The adjacent lab/lecture room contains three petrographic workstations, each with research level polarizing and binocular microscopes. Catering to small groups, the facility is designed to allow for personal interaction as well as flexibility in course content and pace. e-mail:barbara@scottsmithpetrology.com Tel: (1) 604 984 9609 Fax: (1) 604 984 8426 1st to 8th International Kimberlite Conferences Aber Resources Ltd.
