Marriages of the London District, 1800 – 1833. Oxford County Entries MARRIAGES OF THE LONDON DISTRICT 1800 – 1833
The following is a transcript of a "Register of Marriages for the London District". The
Register was part of the collection of Col. Shanley and bears the inscription “From G. and S.
Askin, April 1870 “
This Register appears to be a copy of returns made by officiating clergymen and justices. The
arrangement for the earlier years is not precisely chronological either as to date of Marriage
or date of registration.
Some of the Marriages for the period immediately following the one concerned here were
published in the "History of Middlesex County" (Toronto 1889), and it is apparent that they
were considered to be the earliest marriage records for the District then known to be extant.
The London District was a large area that is now taken up by more than one county these
include Middlesex, Kent, Huron, Bruce, Norfolk and Oxford counties.
This transcript contains marriages from 1800-1833 and is by no means a complete list of
marriages from the district. The London District Marriage Register is in two parts this
is the first part which is from 1800-1833 the second part covers the period from 1833-1849.
In some cases marriages for certain counties are not in the marriage record after a certain
date,
as is the case of Oxford County then known as Brock District. It's marriage register starts in
1839.
