Paul told us of the short life (late 1920s-1941) of the Beijing Badlands and the shortened lives of it’s most memorable characters including: How the dancer, Tatitana Korovina became Lilian. How the Madams: Brana and Rosie end up in Peking. More about the Russian Pimp: Saxsen the Kot. It will be a big wrench for him and his family and an even greater one for RAS China in Shanghai. Peter was the Founding President when we reconvened in 2007 and has been a continuing guiding light for us. Peter will continue with the RAS Heritage project which will eventually be carried on our website. You will have the opportunity to hear Peter speak once again, before he leaves in June, when we host a special Book Launch for his limited edition, Peace at the Cathay at 4pm on 25th May at the Cincin Bar, Fairmont Peace Hotel. We also say Bon Voyage to two other Council members this summer. Neale McGoldrick who has attended many events over the years and always a lively and informative contributor at our Lectures and Study Group meetings, and Simon Drakeford our Honorary Treasurer and rugby historian whose book on the history of rugby in Shanghai will be published later in the year. RAS Council will be hosting a special Farewell Reception for Peter, Neale and Simon on Sunday 12th May. We thank them all for their great contribution to RAS China and send them our good wishes as they begin the next chapter in their lives. We are very pleased to announce that RAS Member, Peter MacInnes, has very kindly agreed to join Council and was co-opted in April. Peter has lived in China with his family, for many years and will take over as Honorary Treasurer when Simon leaves. I would especially like to thank all our speakers and contributors for our May activities. We have several events lined up for you and do hope to see many of you there. In 36 lectures, award-winning Professor Grant Hardy of the University of North Carolina at Asheville introduces you to the men and women responsible for molding Asian philosophy and for giving birth to a wide variety of spiritual and ideological systems, including Hinduism, Daoism, Confucianism, Sufism, and Buddhism. By focusing on these key thinkers in their historical contexts, you'll witness the development of these rich traditions as they shaped and defined Eastern cultures through the rise and fall of empires, the friendly and hostile encounters with each other and with the Western world, and the rapid advancements of the modern age. Shower (Xizao), directed by Zhang Yuan, 1999 (92 minutes) Told through multiple narrators, Wang Xiaofang crafts a unique and complex tale of official mischief where civil servants prioritize personal welfare over public welfare and 'serve the people' is just about the last thing on their minds... A northeastern city in Dongzhou province needs a new Mayor, and there are plenty of hungry candidates eager for the top job. When the personal notebook of a high-up official is exposed to the powers that be - the government's own internal enforcement brigade – its humble pages initiate an office wide manhunt for the anonymous notebook sender, casting a suspicious eye over everyone. My Grandfather W.A.L Pardoe, left Barry in Wales, when he was about 21, to travel to Shanghai where he had a job as second surveyor with the Shanghai Municipal Council. He went by train and I have a copy of the diary he kept on his trip through Europe, Russia and Siberia. Grandpa met and married Granny in Shanghai and my Dad and his brothers and sister were born there. The boys came back to England to school when they were about 11 and Granny came back in 1936 with my Aunt Jane leaving Grandpa to follow in 1940 Since I was a very little girl I had wanted to go to Shanghai and used to love to look at the Chinese things which Granny had in their house in Somerset I have always been greedy for information about Dad and Grandpa’s time in Shanghai and used to say that when I finally received a promised inheritance from my Granny's estate, I would go to Barry Station in Wales and ask for two single tickets to Shanghai! Deciding to spend some of our children's inheritance brought the chance of a “big trip” nearer and once I noticed the date Grandpa left Wales there was no doubt about when and where we would go! Grandpa left Barry on the 15.40 train on April 20th 1913 and we will leave Barry on the 15.40 train exactly 100 years later. We will travel the same route by train and ferry and hope to replicate some of the photos I have of Grandpas trip and of the first months he was in Shanghai. On his first day in Shanghai he went to the races and he stayed at “The Club”, Ravenscourt, both of which I have some lovely pictures of. I will share notes from his diary and mine. I have a film he took of their life in Shanghai and I have letters Granny wrote home in 1927 which I will quote from and which I hope will amuse you. Being in Shanghai will be a life's ambition met and I look forward to it very much 6 7 Tuesday 21st – RAS Library – 7pm Members 30 RMB Non Members 80 RMB DR DA ZHENG - Chiang Yee and Three Women Chiang Yee (1903-1977), best known for his Silent Traveller series, was one of the most successful Chinese writers in the English language. While he was often celebrated for his literary and artistic accomplishments overseas, very few people knew the difficulties and challenges he had experienced. The talk will focus on three women, who had each played an important role in his personal life and career. A revelation of these relationships will help us gain a better understanding of Chiang Yee as well as a deeper appreciation of the significance of women in socio-cultural development and immigrant history. Da Zheng is professor of English and director of the Asian Studies Program at Suffolk University. A Shanghai native, he attended graduate school at Boston University in 1986, where he received his PhD in English. His recent publications being Chiang Yee: The Silent Traveller from the East (2010). He is now working on a biography of Shih-I Hsiung, who wrote the popular English language play Lady Precious Stream and the novel The Bridge of Heaven. Saturday 25th - BOOK LAUNCH - 4pm Cincin Bar Fairmont Peace Hotel PETER HIBBARD MBE - PEACE AT THE CATHAY Waking into the Peace Hotel on his first visit to Shanghai in February 1986 was an act that changed the course of Peter Hibbard’s life. He was confounded by the building and those of its neighbours along the Bund and left determined to find out more. A major breakthrough came in 1988 whilst he was working in Beijing when the forbidden doors to the historic foreign language collection at the National Library of China were thrown open to him allowing the completion of a first draft of the book in 1991. Twenty-two years on, and on the eve of his departure from China, his distant ambition has been realised with the publication of Peace at the Cathay. Hibbard’s enchantment with the former Cathay Hotel never faded over the years and he was the official historian for architect’s Hirsch Bedner Associates during the recent renovation. He considers himself very fortunate in chronicling what he believes was the finest, most visionary, hotel of its time and of having made many friends along the journey - among them Sir Victor Sassoon’s closest surviving relatives and descendants of George Leopold Wilson, the Far East’s greatest and unsung British architect of his era. The Journal of Charles Courtney, Surgeon RN recounting experiences and observations of the Second Opium War, 1856 – 1860’ Disease, accidents and battle injuries in foreign climes have been the lot of naval surgeons throughout history and fortunately many accounts of extraordinary experiences survive, having been meticulously recorded in journals. This is one such example, the journal of Naval Surgeon Charles Courtney who served in the China Squadron in the mid-nineteenth century. It is a unique and hitherto unpublished account of his travels and observations in a rapidly changing and dramatic era in Chinese history. The original journal is in the form of a leather bound book written in longhand that documents visits to ports along the China coast from Canton to Shanghai and also describes a short visit to Japan to install the first ever British Consul to Hakodate. The journal is an eyewitness account of significant historical events including the Canton campaign during the Second Opium War and of the failed assault on the Taku forts in 1859. In his deployment Courtney was required to operate on sailors with dreadful injuries under battle conditions as well as keeping the ship’s crew in the best possible state of health, literally ‘fighting fit’. In addition he was required to manage a wide variety of illnesses such as malaria, typhoid, dysentery, typhus and the ever present ‘gleet’ and ‘pox’. Despite these onerous duties, Courtney found time to make regular entries to his journal which describe in detail the topography, medical environment, people and customs encountered along the coasts of China and Japan. The journal also contains essays on opium smoking and foot binding and also a treatise on Chinese medical literature written together with renowned sinologist Alexander Wylie during Courtney’s sojourn in Shanghai. This treatise is one of the earliest contributions by westerners to catalogue and acknowledge the contributions of Chinese medical scholars to our understanding of the medical sciences. Having been discovered by chance, the journal is a rich resource for those with an interest in Chinese, naval or medical history. Hard copies are available for purchase at RAS events and during library opening hours. To reserve your copies email enquiry@royalasiaticsociety.org.cn putting “Monographs” in the subject box. The monographs have achieved wide acclaim since their publication last year. Reviews of Lao She in London include: "A beautifully written book that combines literary biography with a remarkably succinct account of British modernism and an evocative portrait of interbellum London, as viewed through Chinese eyes. Anne Witchard reminds us eloquently of the key role played by Chinese influences - both classical and modern in literary modernism, and makes a great contribution to our understanding of Lao She's London years." Julia Lovell, Birkbeck College, University of London and for Knowledge is Pleasure: “This is a sensitive and elegantly written biography of one of the most passionate Sinologists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The author moves fluidly between closely shadowing Florence Ayscough’s remarkable life and immersion in Chinese culture and stepping back to illuminate her setting and kindred spirits. Those previously familiar with only a few of Ayscough’s pioneering achievements will find in this monograph a coherent narrative unfolding before them; those for whom she is an unknown name are in for the delight of discovery. Lindsay Shen is to be admired for recognizing that this impressive story is worth telling and for giving it such vividly human character. “ Elinor Pearlstein, Associate Curator of Chinese Art, Art Institute of Chicago 10 Royal Asiatic Society China - Newsletter Vol 4 No 5 – May 2013 We extend heartfelt thanks to all our recent event sponsors: www.earnshawbooks.com www.hkupress.org 1195 Fuxing Zhong Lu/Shaanxi Nan Lu www.sbc-usst.edu.cn Rm 201, Raffles City, 268 Central Tibet Rd www.interfaceglobal.com www.coca-cola.com SUZHOU Gunxiufang 77, Shi Quan Jie. www.suzhoubookworm.com 1 Wulumuqui Lu www.glolondon.com www.fairmont.com 410C North Suzhou Rd Hongkou www.chailiving.com Jiashan Market Shanxi Nan Road Lane 550 No. 37 Building D www.melange-oasis.com RAS China Council Members 2012-2013 President – Katy Gow Vice Presidents – Tess Johnston, Mike Nethercott, Jan Flohr Hon Secretary – Patricia Lambert Hon Treasurer – Simon Drakeford/Peter MacInnes Hon Programme Director - vacant Hon Journal Editor - vacant Hon Librarian – Ed Allen Hon Research & Publications Director – Paul French Council Member – IT matters – Lynn Fawcett Council Member – Communication - Alexandra Hendrickson Council Member - Membership – Wendy Stockley Council Member – Susie Gordon Council Member – Peter Hibbard Council Member – Liz Jennings Council Member – Neale McGoldrick Council Member – Ian Crawford Council Member – Peter Harris Vice President Suzhou Chapter – Bill Dodson Vice President Beijing Chapter – Alan Babington-Smith Enquiries: enquiry@royalasiaticsociety.org.cn 78 Xing Guo Road, Shanghai 200052 www.radisson.com/shanghaicn_plaza HONORARY PRESIDENT Mr Brian Davidson HM Consul General British Consulate Shanghai HON VICE PRESIDENTS Carma Elliot CMG OBE, Nenad Djordjevic, Professor Liu Wei PAST PRESIDENTS 2007-2011 – Peter Hibbard MBE Membership: membership@royalasiaticsociety.org.cn Royal Asiatic Society China - Newsletter Vol 4 No 5 – May 2013 RAS MEMBERSHIP FORM Any foreign passport holder interested in Asian culture and in promoting the aims of the Society may apply for membership.
