University of Alberta International Baccalaureate 3 Big IB Advantages Personalized Advising Questions on admission or transfer credit? Seeking advice on the range of programs and courses available? We invite you to talk with someone who understands the challenges you accomplished through the IB program and who can help you learn what to expect from your university education. We offer you dedicated IB advisors who will not only answer your questions, but also coordinate advising sessions, campus tours, and student-for-a-day visits. Your direct access to our IB advisors is IB@registrar. ualberta.ca. 4 University of Alberta International Baccalaureate Special Events As an IB Diploma student, you are invited to attend special events throughout the year that recognize your special achievements. These events introduce you to the U of A’s campuses, programs, and services. For more information about our IB events, please visit www.registrar.ualberta.ca/IB. Scholarships Year after year, our IB students are recognized for their scholastic and leadership achievements through our Academic Excellence, Scholastic Distinction, and Leadership competitions. We also offer a dedicated IB Scholarship to the top 50 diploma students admitted. This special scholarship—added to all other scholarships offered—is a little something extra to recognize your great achievements. For example, Julia is an IB Diploma candidate from Calgary. Based on her excellence in academics and incredible leadership potential, she applied for, and was offered, the following scholarships: Scholarship Amount Academic Excellence $5,000 Scholastic Distinction Chancellor’s Citation $15,000 Entrance Leadership Award $3,500 International Baccalaureate (IB) Scholarship bonus $1,000 Total: $24,500 University of Alberta International Baccalaureate 5 Great Beginnings - IB Admissions Early Final Admission Based on Predicted Grades The rigors of the IB Diploma have prepared you for the challenges of university life, and the University of Alberta wants to reward you for your commitment to success. Full IB Diploma candidates are thus eligible for final admission prior to graduation, on the basis of their predicted IB Diploma results. In order to be considered for final admission prior to the end of the academic year, you are required to submit your predicted IB scores, either by printing your predicted grades on official high school letterhead or by filling out our Predicted IB Grades Form found online at www.registrar.ualberta.ca/IB. Your predicted results must be authorized by your IB Coordinator or Principal. To be evaluated for final admission based on predicted grades, you must present six IB courses, five of which must be the required subjects for your program, in addition to the competitive predicted diploma score. Competitive scores range from 28 to 34 points (excluding bonus points), depending on your desired program. Students whose scores fall below the competitive diploma score may still be eligible for Early Admission under traditional admission practices. Regardless of when your admission is processed, all IB students are required to submit a final and official IB transcript to the University of Alberta, as well as any other required items, by the posted deadline in your Bear Tracks account. Please speak to your IB Coordinator to request that your IB transcript be sent directly to the U of A, or contact IBO directly at www.ibo.org. 6 University of Alberta International Baccalaureate Admission for Dual Curricula Students If you are simultaneously completing the IB Diploma and another curriculum (e.g. Alberta Education Diploma, BC Ministry of Education Diploma, etc.), you will be considered for admission using the highest individual scores presented on either transcript in the required subjects for your program. For example, Anthony presents both IB Biology (HL) and Biology 30. When we receive his official IB transcript and his official Alberta Education transcript, we will use the higher of the two Biology results when calculating his admission average. International students who complete IB in addition to GCSE (or equivalent), AS levels, SAT Subject exams, or select other curricula or exams will be given the same consideration. For further details, please contact your U of A IB Advisor at IB@registrar.ualberta.ca. IB Grading Scale In order to be able to calculate an admission average using your IB results, the Admissions Office will convert your IB scores into percentages. Remember, we will always use whichever mark is higher between your Grade 12 course and your IB exam. The following scale will be used: IB Grade % Equivalent 7 98 6 90 5 82 4 73 3 55 2 not accepted for admission 1 not accepted for admission University of Alberta International Baccalaureate 7 Great Recognition The University of Alberta is proud to recognize the hard work put into your IB courses. We award a range of credit options for a number of IB courses at both the Higher (HL) and Standard (SL) levels. Some students, depending on the IB courses they complete, qualify for up to a year of transfer credit! In fact, by completing your Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, we recognize that you have successfully completed all components of the IB Diploma program, and we want to reward you accordingly. The University of Alberta is one of only a few universities in Canada to recognize the TOK for transfer credit. In order to be eligible to receive Transfer Credit, Advanced Placement, or Credit by Special Assessment (CSA), you must receive a score of 6 or 7. The chart on pages 10 and 11 outlines the eligible IB courses and the corresponding U of A equivalent. But first, allow us to explain what all of these terms mean! Terminology Explained Transfer credit is offered when you achieve a score of 6 or 7 in any eligible IB course. This credit will be automatically assessed once your final and official IB transcript is received. If you are awarded transfer credit for your IB coursework, you will not be assigned a specific U of A grade for that course, nor will your IB grade appear on your U of A transcript. Your U of A transcript will simply reflect transfer credit already achieved towards your degree. IB transfer credit will not be factored into your GPA after completion of your first year of studies, so if you have received a scholarship that requires you to be registered in a full course load, you should speak with the Student Awards office to ensure your IB transfer credit does not affect your scholarship standing. You can e-mail the Student Awards office at awards@ualberta.ca. While we encourage you to retain the transfer credit that you have earned, you do have the option to decline the transfer credit awarded for your IB coursework. If you decide to pursue this option, you must complete the required paperwork to decline your IB transfer credit by the course registration add/delete deadline in September of your first year of studies. Full instructions and the form to decline transfer credit can be found on our IB website at www.registrar.ualberta.ca/IB. Advanced placement means that you are permitted to register in a senior level course. You will not receive transfer credit; however, you do get to jump straight into the more advanced areas of a subject that you are passionate about! 8 University of Alberta International Baccalaureate Credit by Special Assessment (CSA): If you would like to receive university transfer credit for eligible IB courses, you can choose to ‘challenge’ the university-level course that is comparable to your IB course. This is usually done with a special exam. The mark that you achieve on the U of A exam will appear on your U of A transcript. IB courses eligible for CSA are listed in the following Equivalency Chart for IB Courses. If you would like to write a CSA exam, send an e-mail to IB@registrar.ualberta.ca. Transfer Credit and Professional Programs If you are planning to apply to a program that requires preprofessional study (e.g. Business, Dentistry, etc.) your IB transfer credit may help you get there. This means that you may be able to meet the program prerequisites with your IB course work! For example, if you achieve a score of 6 or 7 in Physics (HL), you will receive transfer credit for PHYS 124 (★3) and 126 (★3), which are prerequisite courses for the professional programs, like Dentistry. However, you should always consult with your Faculty Advisor to ensure that you are registered in the right number of courses for admission into your program! Some of our professional programs will even factor in your IB scores when calculating your prerequisite admission average. For example, if you achieve a score of 6 or 7 in Biology (HL), you will be awarded transfer credit for BIOL 107 (★3) and your grade for Biology (HL) will be factored into your prerequisite admission average. As you can see, your IB courses simply put you one step ahead! If you have any questions about Transfer Credit, Advanced Placement, or Credit by Special Assessment, contact your IB Advisor at IB@registrar.ualberta.ca. EXAMPLE: Let’s say you are interested in applying to Dentistry for which BIOL 107 is a prerequisite subject. When your Admissions Advisor is evaluating your application for Dentistry, your IB Biology score will be considered in the calculation of your admission average. For this calculation, an IB grade of 7 will be equated to a 4.0, and an IB grade of 6 will be equated to a 3.7 on the U of A four point scale. The remainder of your admissions average calculation will be made up of courses that you complete while studying at the U of A. Again, you should always check with your Faculty Advisor to ensure that you are registered in the right courses in first year. Students entering the Faculty of Arts who are given advanced placement will be admitted to a senior course after determination of their background qualifications for that course (interview, placement test, etc.). They may also challenge a junior or senior course for credit via the Credit by Special Assessment route if they have appropriate qualifications and are eligible within the regulations. (2) Credit will be awarded for all five regional options offered at the higher level (HL), including Africa; Americas; East and South East Asia and Oceania; Europe (including Russia/USSR); and South Asia and the Middle East (including North Africa). (3) For students entering the Faculty of Engineering, transfer credit for the first (qualifying) year courses does not reduce the minimum load requirement of 37.0 units. (4) Students wishing to pursue Credit by Special Assessment (CSA), please refer to §14.2.5 of the U of A Calendar for information.
