Students should have sufficient linguistic proficiency to collect and analyze media data from a setting of their choice. * Youth Culture in South Korea Course Description: How do we reconcile youth penchant for luxury goods and cosmetic procedures with their participation in nationâwide political protests? How are they affected by increased youth unemployment? In what ways do they consume and produce pop culture particularly in relation to idol groups and Hallyu? This course examines the dynamic, vibrant, and politicized youth culture in contemporary South Korea. With a focus on the economy, education, consumption, gender/sexuality, popular culture, and digital media, we will examine Korean youth as new cultural subjects in relation to the challenges posed by recent transformations in Korean society. * Gun Violence as Social Epidemic: This anthropological seminar extends academic activities at UCSD to examine the epidemic of gun violence from a variety of social scientific and health science perspectives. We explore social, cultural, political, and economic factors in relation to “pathologies of power” as these affect health and possibilities for social change.
