Our support extends from one-on-one consultations to group workshops and webinars to online tutorials. We’ll help you: Our mission: At Online Learning… We help faculty find innovative and effective ways to use technology and provide comprehensive support services for students in online courses and programs. Drawing on expertise in technology and pedagogy, we assist faculty with all aspects of course design and help colleges and departments develop online programs. We also share information about effective practices across the university and examine the effect of technology on teaching and learning. We believe instructional technology contributes to RIT’s academic excellence—fostering greater communication and collaboration, encouraging active learning, streamlining course administration, increasing student engagement and developing students’ skills for future learning and work. • Build a collaborative online learning community • Develop and manage engaging discussion • Leverage myCourses to increase your productivity • Plan and facilitate web conferences • Make your course accessible to all learners Student support Students rely on us to help them understand and use online learning technology. From getting started in myCourses to online course evaluations, we make sure students experience a high level of support to ensure their success. Services we provide include: • • • • • Centralized student support with phone, e-mail and walk-in services Student orientation Proctored exam coordination Student satisfaction surveys Online course evaluations Facts and stats • Over 20 complete online degree programs including graduate and undergraduate degrees and 29 certificate programs • Over 8,400 enrollments per year in online courses, with a 95 percent completion rate • Over 500 online courses offered annually, starting four times a year • More than 4,300 unique students take online courses each academic year • RIT has three times the national number of faculty teaching online courses according to the National Center of Education Statistics— RIT has over 19 percent, nationally only 6 percent of faculty teach online • More students at RIT have taken online courses—22 percent of students at RIT compared with 17 percent nationally • More than 120 faculty have participated in the Blended Learning Program, combining the best of online and face-to-face instruction Online Learning supports effective teaching and learning across the entire continuum of computer-mediated instruction: Online <–––> Blended <–––> Technology-enhanced ONLINE COURSES are taught asynchronously through the Internet and myCourses, allowing students to take classes from anywhere. All online courses are instructorled and highly interactive; typical activities include online discussions and debates, real-time chat and web-conferencing sessions, small group work, self-testing exercises and simulations. BLENDED COURSES integrate an appealing combination of classroom and online interaction. Most blended courses replace 25 to 50 percent of classroom time with online instructor-guided activities through myCourses. These courses allow for more active learning and flexible scheduling, while maintaining the face-to-face contact characteristic of the classroom. TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED COURSES are on-campus classroom courses integrating various instructional technologies—using myCourses to distribute course materials, post grades and other feedback online and offer convenient submission of work through the Dropbox; or that use student-response and web-conferencing systems. You can use a variety of techniques and technology to deliver your courses. We’ll help you sort through the options to design learning activities that coincide with your desired learning outcomes. myCourses Interact with students, post courserelated information, offer quizzes and exams with automatic grading and create a flexible and interactive environment for every type of course. This web-based software has both academic and non-instructional uses. Its integrated class and group e-mail lists, discussion boards and live chat facilitate online communities and even search committees. myCourses is associated with all 12,000 RIT courses offered each year. It’s had more than 1 million student logins since summer 2005 and 47 percent of all courses use one or more of its features. Teaching and Learning Technology lab Use this campus resource to develop your skills in online instruction and create class materials. Here you can create a range of course materials from simple handouts and PowerPoint presentations to multimedia audio/video streaming projects. We offer faculty development workshops and one-on-one sessions in teaching online, using course management systems and instructional tools. Web conferencing Record video lectures or voiceannotated PowerPoint presentations in the easy-to-use Studio G. Part of the Teaching and Learning Technology Lab, Studio G is equipped with professional audio and video equipment. After an initial introduction to the facility, you can use it on your own. Online course evaluations Studio G R O C H E S T E R More than 20 percent of RIT courses use online course evaluations, with only 6 percent of those being online courses. Share PowerPoint presentations and other materials online, bring in a guest expert from anywhere in the world, or advise a student at another location “in-person.” This web-based communication tool allows audio and video discussion, whiteboards and text chat. More than 200 RIT faculty have used this technology since its launch in summer 2006. Clipboard survey tool Find out how students rate your class quickly and efficiently. This tool can give you immediate feedback, summary reports, compare results with other instructors teaching the same course and offer an overall look at the entire department and college’s performance, depending on how your department has set up its reporting features. I N S T I T U T E O F Want to know what people think about something? Survey them! The Clipboard online survey system allows RIT faculty and staff to set up, deliver and evaluate surveys with a user-friendly web-based tool. More than 2,000 surveys have been developed and deployed since spring 2004. Student Response Systems Often called “clickers” on campus, these wireless keypads are used in classroom-based courses to get input from a large audience within seconds. They allow faculty to assess students’ understanding of a topic, actively engage students through surveys and T E C H N O L O G Y pretest questions and take attendance. Clickers are one example of how Online Learning supports campus technology as a whole, bringing new tools and techniques into the classroom. More than 100 courses with more than 1,500 students have used clickers since fall 2005. Customized approaches Don’t see what you’re looking for? Online Learning stays on top of emerging technology and thrives on collaborations with faculty. For example, we’ve supported projects that explore live ASL interpreting of web conferences, tablet PCs, online peer-to-peer evaluation systems, podcasting and virtual learning environments such as Second Life.
