It is currently used for temporary exhibits, a library and other university services. Check out the amazing cloister! Look out for it on Rúa do Franco. © Santiago Turismo The Cathedral The soul of the city, Santiago Cathedral consists of a Baroque overlay added to a Romanesque heart. It is believed to hold the mortal remains of St. James the Apostle. Don’t miss the Pórtico da Gloria with its musicians and medieval instruments, or the various prazas (plazas) surrounding it on all sides: Obradoiro, Quintana, Praterías and Inmaculada. You may wish to visit the cathedral’s stone roofs, offering the best views of the city (it costs 10 euros), and the cathedral museum (admission 5 euros). www.catedraldesantiago.es 64 Museum of the Galician People The Museum of the Galician People (Museo do Pobo Galego) is Galicia’s foremost ethnographic museum. Situated in the old thirteenth-century Dominican convent of Bonaval, it also houses the Pantheon of Illustrious Galicians. Don’t forget to see the adjoining gardens, a monument in their own right. www.museodopobo.es CGAC The Galician Contemporary Art Centre (Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo) is housed in a building that is a contemporary architectural gem itself, by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. Admission free. www.cgac.org © Santiago Turismo Parks There is no shortage of green spaces in Santiago de Compostela! We specially recommend four parks: firstly the Alameda, a romantic, 19th century park with a spectacular panoramic view of the cathedral, and which adjoins the University Campus Gardens. Another must-see is the Parque de Bonaval situated next to the Museum of the Galician People and the CGAC; this was also designed by Álvaro Siza on the grounds of the adjacent Dominican convent. Then there is the Parque de Belvís located in a natural moat around the Old Town. Colegiate of Sar This 12th century Romanesque collegiate church is unique on account of its crooked walls and pillars, caused by a building defect which makes it an unusual attraction. www.colegiatadesar.com Places to Eat Santiago is a great place if you love your food, for both mere beginners and certified foodies. The old town is like a stone jungle, teeming with religious monuments, time-worn university buildings, mansions of the gentry, and private dwellings peering out over narrow cobbled streets with intermittent stretches of pillared arcades. The most important streets are Rúa Nova (‘New Street’) and Rúa do Vilar, best strolled down at a leisurely pace stopping along the way to check out the shop windows, vinotecas, pubs, and more.
