Internet
Media Counter
The last WOMEX night – Saturday to Sunday – was
chosen by the European authorities for changing clocks
from summer to winter time, thus granting one more
hour of sleep to all exhausted delegates before you head
to the final WOMEX Networking Breakfast and Award
Ceremony on Sunday morning at 10:00. Don’t forget
to change your clocks!
Wi-Fi is available free of charge in the Trade Fair hall
at Cidade da Cultura. A number of public Internet
terminals are also available for delegates to use.
› Front Flap/WOMEX Venues
Journalists needing specific information, artist or speaker
contacts, recording permission, a slot in the radio studio
or a quiet interview room should come to the Media
Counter in the registration area of Cidade da Cultura –
the media team will be happy to help you.
Cloakroom
A cloakroom is available at the Cidade da Cultura
throughout the Trade Fair days. Delegates will be directed
to the cloakroom upon arrival in the registration area.
Most of the other WOMEX venues also have
cloakroom facilities available.
Daycases
As a complementary presentation to the Nightcases,
WOMEX Daycases are devoted to a specific artist/style.
A brief introductory speech before each Daycase offers
the chance to learn more about the music. There will be
two per day: Madeeh (Malaysia) and Paolo Angeli (Italy/
Spain); Driss El Maloumi Trio (Morocco) and Maarja Nuut
(Estonia); Frank Yamma (Australia) and Ilkka Heinonen
Trio (Finland). The Daycases take place during the midday
Conference break, Thursday to Saturday, 13:00 – 14:00
and 14:15 – 15:15 at the Daycase Stage in Cidade da
Cultura.

Language
To keep communication between WOMEX participants
practical and efficient, WOMEX has chosen International
English as the lingua franca. Adopted by the Internet, the
professional music community in general and the world
music community in particular, this was the logical choice
for successful interaction.
Galicia has its own indigenous language and you will
hear Galician spoken almost everywhere you go in
Santiago de Compostela and beyond. For useful words
and phrases see
› Santiago de Compostela/Glossary of Galician Words
Merchandising
If you want to buy CDs of the Showcase artists, you can
often do so from the artists themselves, either right at
the stage or at the stage entrance after the concert.
Networking Breakfast
Join us for a final WOMEX Networking Breakfast served
in Plaza de Cervantes on Sunday from 10:00 – 12:00 just

Santiago
San Martiño Pinario
San Martiño Pinario was Galicia’s biggest Benedictine
monastery, second in size only to the Escorial in the
whole of Spain.

Colexio de Fonseca
A Renaissance building, this college facing onto the Praza
do Obradoiro was the birthplace of the Universidade
de Santiago de Compostela. It is currently used for
temporary exhibits, a library and other university services.
Check out the amazing cloister! Look out for it on Rúa do
Franco.

The Cathedral
The soul of the city, Santiago Cathedral consists of
a Baroque overlay added to a Romanesque heart. It
is believed to hold the mortal remains of St. James
the Apostle. Don’t miss the Pórtico da Gloria with its
musicians and medieval instruments, or the various
prazas (plazas) surrounding it on all sides: Obradoiro,
Quintana, Praterías and Inmaculada. You may wish to
visit the cathedral’s stone roofs, offering the best views
of the city (it costs 10 euros), and the cathedral museum
(admission 5 euros).

Museum of the Galician People
The Museum of the Galician People (Museo do Pobo
Galego) is Galicia’s foremost ethnographic museum.
Situated in the old thirteenth-century Dominican convent
of Bonaval, it also houses the Pantheon of Illustrious
Galicians. Don’t forget to see the adjoining gardens,
a monument in their own right.

The Galician Contemporary Art Centre (Centro Galego

contemporary architectural gem itself, by the Portuguese

Parks
There is no shortage of green spaces in Santiago de
Compostela! We specially recommend four parks: firstly
the Alameda, a romantic, 19th century park with a
spectacular panoramic view of the cathedral, and which
adjoins the University Campus Gardens. Another
must-see is the Parque de Bonaval situated next to
the Museum of the Galician People and the CGAC; this
was also designed by Álvaro Siza on the grounds of the
adjacent Dominican convent. Then there is the Parque
de Belvís located in a natural moat around the Old Town.
Colegiate of Sar
This 12th century Romanesque collegiate church is
unique on account of its crooked walls and pillars, caused
by a building defect which makes it an unusual attraction.

Places to Eat
Santiago is a great place if you love your food, for both
mere beginners and certified foodies. Do give Galician
cuisine a try, whether it’s with tapas or a sit-down meal,
but there are also some interesting international options
to be had.
‘The Black Cat’ is a cosy little bar offering traditional fare,
family-run since 1920. We dare you to try the cuttlefish

Central Market
The market (Mercado de Abastos) is the city’s main and
most genuine traditional food market, where you can
peruse the fresh fish and seafood, buy some to take home
or eat it right there amidst all the bustle. The building
where the market is housed is itself monumental.

DE Compostela
Santiago’s old town (a cidade vella) has been a UNESCO
World Heritage Site since 1985, as have the cathedral
and the Camiño itself. The old town is like a stone
jungle, teeming with religious monuments, time-worn
university buildings, mansions of the gentry, and private
dwellings peering out over narrow cobbled streets
with intermittent stretches of pillared arcades. The most
important streets are Rúa Nova (‘New Street’) and Rúa
do Vilar, best strolled down at a leisurely pace stopping
along the way to check out the shop windows, vinotecas,
pubs, and more. For more information about Santiago’s
sights, visit www.santiagoturismo.com

Santiago de Compostela is small and accessible,
