As the leaves are all raked, the temperature is dropping, and we are busily preparing for the holiday sale, I would like to reflect on a few of my favorite Friends of TCPL accomplishments this year.

The opening of the Technology Portal in the downtown library was an exciting event for all involved. Having the mayor and other local dignitaries there to help celebrate added to the enthusiasm that had been building during the construction. I was proud and happy as financial contributions from the Friends were recognized.
We were able to help with the event too! If you haven’t been to the Portal, I suggest you stop in and ask a library staff member to show you what this unique facility has to offer.
This March, we added 4 new members to our board of directors: Richard Carson, Jessica Teets, Rilla Flynn, and Amy VanHorn. Serving on the board requires an impressive level of commitment to the Friends, and it has been a pleasure to work with these 4 new members of the board. They have already contributed their talent and taken on leadership roles. Amy has even taken on the demanding role of treasurer, after Carol
Skvarenina moved away in June.” We also have recently added Suzanne Cunningham to the board and she will be co-chairing the books sales.
Our online sales continues to grow at an amazing pace. At the end of 10 months in 2012, we have over
$30,000 in sales from our Amazon and eBay stores. This is a 50% increase from sales for the first 10 months of 2011! I don’t know how Jane Rutledge and the other volunteers in online sales do this, but I am glad they do. What we have accomplished with online sales is the envy (and the model) for a lot of other Friends groups.
Have you seen the cover picture on our Facebook page? If not, I suggest you check it out, and “like” us while you are there. The picture shows the long line outside the library for the Friends Only night at the June book sale. It stretched all the way down the sidewalk to the West parking lot, as usual. One of my favorite parts of the sale is seeing all these members lined up and anxious to find out what we have for them inside the library.
They start lining up more than an hour before the sale.
This October we hosted a Friends Of Indiana Libraries conference at the downtown library. There were more than 50 people here from libraries around the state, eager to share ideas about how you can support your local library. I came away with some good ideas from the day of meetings, and felt energized knowing that there are so many others passionate about libraries. Some of our leaders also did a presentation about what we do at this library, and we brought the guests downstairs for a tour of where we process donated books in the library basement. It’s been another great year for the Friends! We should all be proud of what have done for the library, $52,000 in books sales and $30,000 in online sales so far, and look forward to more of the same in
2013.

Friends of TCPL celebrated National Friends of Libraries Week by hosting a one day conference for Friends of Indiana Libraries
(FOIL) on October 22. In attendance were more than 50 Friends members from libraries all around the state, including 6 from our own library. There were presentations about the “Learning the Basics of E-books,” “Tips for Volunteer Management,” Computers are Friends of the Library,” and more. But the best part was meeting and learning from volunteers in other locations who share our passion for supporting libraries. We also had a chance to tell everyone about what we do at TCPL, maybe even brag about our success a little. Seriously, our Friends group is highly regarded for the longtime success we’ve en joyed turning donated books into financial support for the library. This event was also a business meeting for FOIL, where this group officially became an Indiana Library Federation
(ILF) division. This move will help FOIL remain viable by taking advantage of resources from the larger ILF organization.

“It was a dark and stormy night” on Friday of the book sale in September, but the wind and rain didn't stop our dedicated shoppers – our income for Friday was $7,144.10.
The total for the sale was $17,884.92. We started with 910 boxes of books, we finished with only 40 boxes left.
I am happy, I'm sure you are happy, and I know the TCPL was VERY happy, with that amount. Let's do it again in December!

On a Personal Level..........from Adele
I've been Book Sale Chairman for the last five years (and for a few sales before that), but it's time to turn the reins over to new people. Larry French and Suzanne Cunningham will be co-chairmen for the books sales in
2013. I thank them for volunteering for this job and wish them well.
But I want to also thank all you people that have made my years successful – from the sorters that work downstairs all year long, to the 70-80 people it takes for the four day book sales, to all of you that come to the sale (sometimes more than once) and buy the books. It's a good deal and a good bargain all the way around.
A special thanks to Jane Rutledge, Adviser Extraordinaire, for all the advice and support she has given me over the last 20 years. And a very special thanks to Jos Holman and his library staff – it has made the job easier knowing that they are behind us with all their support and appreciation.
See you around the Library! Adele Needham
SAVE $5000—Get Your Newsletter Through Email
The Friends spend about $5000 printing and mailing the newsletter. We could spend that money helping the library buy books or technology. We sent an enewsletter for the September sale as a test but now want to plan on sending the newsletter as an email from here on. The Friday night pass will still be sent in the enewsletter for you to print, similar to printing off your airplane tickets or concert tickets.
We will switch to emailing the newsletter for the March sale. If you want to receive your newsletter through the mail, you will need to contact me. Cherry Delaney, 765-404-7672, cdsaa3@aol.com
