Advanced Placement Calculus A/B
2015-2016 Summer Assignment from Mr. Grubis @ WVHS
Expectations are one hour of homework after each class period. Students with weak
algebra skills will need to spend even more time on homework. There will be a quiz on
this summer assignment during/after the first week of school. I strongly recommend a
TI-89, TI-Spire, or TI-84 for calculus.

to websites for Algebra review http://www.purplemath.com/index.htm
A Find the domain, range, and zeros for the 12 basic function (practice so that you can
graph the function and list the domain, range, and zeros without a calculator)
You should know how to graph all 12 functions without a calculator. (See the last page)

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/strtlneq2.htm
1. Find the equation of the line perpendicular to 2x +3y = 4 that goes through the
point (1, -3)
2. Find the equation of the line parallel to 2x + 2y = 7 through the point (3, ½)
D. Use functional notation. Help at: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/fcnnot.htm
1. f(x) = 3x + 2. Find f(7) =

2. A car travels 360 miles in a period of 180 minutes. Find the average velocity of the car
in miles per hour over this time period.
3. g(x) = x2 – 2x + 1 Find
g(2) - g(1)

F Solving Trigonometric Functions (you will need to know the 6 basic functions)
Example: compute exact value for cos-1(1/2). Answer is π/3
Example: evaluate to three decimal places sin-1(0.453). Answer is approx. 0.470
Example: solve sin(x) = ½ (There are an infinite set of solutions) {π/6 +2nπ, 5π/6 +2nπ
where π is an integer}. http://www.purplemath.com/modules/basirati.htm
