PIC-2015:Technique Program Guide Welcome from the General and Steering Committee Chairs Kang Zhang Mengqi Zhou Yingling Wang Hamido Fujita Jie Lu It is our great privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the IEEE International Conference on Progress in Informatics and Computing, in short form, PIC 2015. As the third edition of IEEE PIC conference series, this year's PIC 2015 will take place in Nanjing, China, December 18-20. Since its first conference in 2010, PIC has been dedicated to address various sub-fields of informatics and computing science, including artificial intelligence, multi-media and human-computer interaction, data management and software engineering, pervasive computing, and applied informatics. In the past few years, computing technology has continuously making progresses. With the ever-increasing scale of both structured data and unstructured data, the requirement for processing big data has acquired more and more attention in both academia and industry. This challenge is accompanied by enormous opportunities. Several paradigms of cloud computing have been developed and widely used to process big data. On the other hand, the growing big data also promote the research on intelligent systems and bring more successful applications. For example, recommendation systems nowadays are more effective and accurate, and plays a more and more important role in business operation. In addition to above-mentioned aspects, researchers have conducted more in-depth studies in many subfields, such as social computing, the Internet of things, bioinformatics, and semantic computation of text, image, video, and audio. We have no doubt that computing science will continue to be a fruitful research area in the near future combined with the stimulation of potential inter-disciplinary communication and collaboration. Our endeavors in this enabling field will further change the world, and will make our lives even better than ever before. PIC 2015 conference aims at serving as a forum for researchers and scientists from different sub-areas of computing science, informatics and application domains to present, discuss, and exchange ideas on enabling technologies, system designs, applications and practice experiences. It is expected to provide a platform where academics and industry members communicate with colleagues from various branches of computing science and informatics. These interactions will facilitate a better understanding of the diversity of the different approaches as well as of their similarities. He obtained his PhD in 1990. He has worked at the Universities of Stockholm, Amsterdam, Helsinki, and Tampere, as well as Xerox Research Centre Europe in Grenoble. Ranta’s research started as a theoretical study of natural language semantics in Constructive Type Theory (monograph “Type Theoretical Grammar”, Oxford University Press 1994). This developed into a research programme on semantics-based multilingual grammars, leading to the implementation of GF (Grammatical Framework) at Xerox. GF today has an open-source community of almost 200 members, working on over 30 languages. Ranta’s second monograph, “Grammatical Framework: Programming with Multilingual Grammars” (CSLI, Stanford, 2011), is also available in Chinese (语法框架-为多种自然语言语法编程 , Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press, 2014). In 2010-2013, Ranta led the European research project MOLTO (Multilingual Online Translation). He started the company Digital Grammars AB in 2014 and is currently sharing his time between the university and the company. “Data-Driven Documentation: A Technique for Reliable Multilingual Information Access” Abstract—In the globalizing world, both individuals and organizations have an increasing need to exchange information in different languages. For instance, a customer in France may want to order products from a Chinese company. The communication may involve initial browsing of Chinese web pages, followed by an order in English and a contract in French and Chinese. Each step involves information access in different languages, and the information itself should be exactly the same independently of language. The traditional way of communicating between languages is by translation. In recent years, machine translation services such as Google and Baidu have become good enough for usage by consumers at browsing level. However, these techniques are not reliable enough for mission-critical tasks such as technical specifications and contracts. Such tasks are carried out by human translators, which is both slow and expensive. In the talk, we will present an alternative technique for multilingual information access. The idea is to use machine-readable, formalized data as the ultimate representation of information. From this data, documents in different languages can be generated at need and with guaranteed fidelity. It is also possible to query the data in different languages and get answers in the same languages. The technique of Data-Driven Documentation (DDD) has similarities with techniques such as natural language generation (NLG), Controlled Natural Languages (CNL), and the Semantic Web. The novelty is in the integration of the different aspects (translation, querying, data acquisition) and, in particular, in the scalability and productivity of the approach. DDD is based on two decades of research on Grammatical Framework (GF), which has created resources and software covering 30 languages and enabling applications ranging from cloud services to mobile speech interfaces. The technique is currently being commercialized by the Digital Grammars AB company, but the GF technology itself is open source and freely usable by other parties as well. Since highcapacity battery technology is not an easy task to achieve in a short time, the reduction of algorithmic complexity of visual (i.e., image and video) information by looking at the problem in a totally new direction is a more realistic approach. In this context, low complexity image and video signal encoder has been a very important topic in the related signal processing community. In this talk, we will look at the compressed sensing (CS) approach for the low complexity image video encoder. Among its many issues, we will discuss problems particularly related to block-based sensing, extension to color, improving reconstruction quality, etc. PIC-2015:Technique Program Guide Keynote Speaker Steven Guan Professor and Director of the Research Institute for Big Data Analytics Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) ,Suzhou, China Steven Guan received his M.Sc. & Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently the director of the Research Institute for Big Data Analytics at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). He has published extensively in these areas, with 130 journal papers and 170+ book chapters or conference papers. He has chaired and delivered keynote speech for 20+ international conferences and served in 130+ international conference committees and 20+ editorial boards “Input Space Partitioning for Machine Learning” Abstract—This talk introduces an input attribute grouping method to improve the performance of learning. During training for a specific problem, the input attributes are partitioned into groups according to the degree of inter-attribute promotion or correlation that quantifies the supportive or negative interactions between attributes. After partitioning, multiple sub-networks are trained by taking each group of attributes as their respective inputs. The final classification result is obtained by integrating the results from each sub-network. Experimental results on several UCI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. PIC-2015:Technique Program Guide Keynote Speaker Xiaoqun Zhang Associate Professor Shanghai Jiao Tong University Shanghai, China Distinguished research fellow; bachelor of Wuhan University, doctorate of South Brittany University, and post-doctorate of University of California at Los Angeles. Her particular specialty is the application of partial differential equation, wavelet analysis, numerical computation and optimization algorithm in signal image processing and analysis, medical image processing, computer vision and image, as well as the computational photography and inverse problems. She has been included in the youth talent plan of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, 2015. “Models and Computational methods for sparsity promoting in imaging science” Abstract-Sparsity promoting models and related computational methods has been one of the main driving force in imaging science, computer vision, inverse problems and related research areas over the last years. Sparsity models are often formulated as nonsmooth or even nonconvex optimization problems that are difficult to solve when the problem size is large. In this talk, I will present sparse regularization models and their numerical schemes in the context of signal and image processing. The talk is composed of four parts. First, I will introduce several sparsity models in imaging inverse problems, including compressive sensing, total variation and its nonlocal variant, wavelet frames and low rank models. These models are described together with applications in image restoration, vector valued imaging, such as color and hyperspectral image fusion, dynamic medical image reconstruction and image segmentation. Secondly, I will present computational aspects for convex sparse models. By exploring separable structures, first order algorithms based on operator and variable splitting are of great importance for developing efficient algorithms in imaging applications. I will present several classes of algorithms based on Bregman iterations, alternating direction of multiplier methods, primal dual splitting algorithms based on proximity operators that we proposed in last years. The proposed schemes often involves only matrix vector multiplication and closed form solutions, that allows easy implementation in practice. The connections between different algorithms will be discussed in detail. The third part is devoted to the nonconvex models that receives a lot of research interest in recent years. Nonconvex sparsity models often lead to better sparse solutions in many applications, while theoretical justification is lacked for most of algorithms. I will discuss some numerical schemes for L0 regularization, matrix factorization models and regularized nonlinear least square problems together with imaging applications. Under certain assumptions, theoretical analysis of the schemes will be present. Finally the talk will be concluded with discussions and open questions from modeling, computation and theoretical aspects. PIC-2015:Technique Program Guide Tutorial Dec 18 15:00-17:00 Data Discovery solutions with Shiny in R Gabriel Valverde1, Dra. Victoria Lopez Lopez2 and Dra. Beatriz González Pérez2 1- Complutense University of Madrid - Faculty of Mathematics,Madrid- Spain 2- Complutense University of Madrid - Faculty of Computer Sciences, Madrid - Spain Abstract-Data Discovery can be defined as processing and treatment system aim in searching for guideline or patterns or interested changes in important fields for business. In the current Data Discovery world, applications has replaced classic BI techniques like standard charting, KPI's by visual tools such as geographical maps, pivot-tables, and heat-maps to find patterns or specific items rapid and intuitive and thus speed up the transformation into business actions. Data Discovery get value from data in a easy way in order to get a global control of the company at different levels of aggregation. The principal diferences with traditional BI that has similar objective as Data Discovery are that static dashboard and strigth reports become interactive and more visual, standard charting, KPI's, and limited graphical representation get interactivity and improvements in the display of several variables. Data discovery solutions as Tableau has change the tipical BI work flow, new characterictics, focus on; end-user data analysis and discovery, access to larger volumes of data, and an ability to create high fidelity presentations of information, and connections with Cloud Datawarehouse reduce the classic dependence on IT by BI. It is possible define just one big dashboard over all data sources with all information and define diference slice acces or aggregation level of each KPI by user. Data Discovery continues improving since 2012 when became one of the mainstream in the field of business analysis, when Gartner publish "Data Discovery has become a mainstream architecture in 2012". A Data Discovery Solution is a software architecture focused on interactive dashboards whose information comes from multiple database. Therefore Data discovery solutions could be considered as a group of tools created to realise a uses-driven process of searching for information get from some multiple data sources that could be use to improve a business. Some private providers in the market are: Tableau, Qlik, Tibco Spotfire, MicroStrategy, SAP (Lumira), Platfora. In this tutorial we explain how to use Shiny by Rstudio, a web application framework for R as a open source Data Discovery interactive Solution and after that compare with others as Tableau that include a interactive data source management with a simple and intuitive way of use.
