John Ferguson, Director of Golf
We have been very fortunate this year to have some frequent rains and the course continues to get better and better each day.
Course conditions are as good as they’ve ever been, and there are a few things we can all do to help keep it that way. First, we need
everyone to pair up in carts whenever possible. Pairing up means less wear and tear on the fairways by having fewer carts on the
turf. Staying on the cart paths near tees and greens will also help reduce the wear and tear on the grass. Please observe all rules and
signage on the course, and pay close attention to holes that might have special instructions on the day that you play. Often times
there are areas that are under repair or have been distressed in one way or another, and it is important to keep cart traffic away from
these areas. Handicap cart users, please be aware of course conditions as well, and avoid wet areas and unnecessary traffic
whenever possible. Last but not least, always remember to repair divots with sand, rake bunkers, and fix ball marks on
greens. When raking the bunkers you want to rake from the middle up never from the edge down. You will see a few more
player assistants on the course over the next few months to help monitor these expectations. We are here to help keep your course
looking beautiful and make everyone’s experience as enjoyable as possible. We sincerely appreciate your efforts to support this
cause. Please feel free to stop in the shop if you have any questions or other suggestions for our team.

Green Committee
Don Milberger
To quote famous author John Steinbeck--”The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”. Now you may be wondering why I
would start the Green Committee newsletter article with this quote.
The reason is this quote pretty well describes our tree planting schedule for this spring. Green Committee members traveled to the
tree nursery at TDS/Gardenville and selected trees in late January. Our original intent was to plant the trees in the February/March
time period but various weather issues made us change our original plans plus the tree nursery was too muddy to allow extraction of
trees.
Anyway, that is now behind us and the trees were delivered to OCC on Thursday, April 9, 2015. If all goes well, the trees should be
in the ground by the time you read this article. The Green Committee wanted “instant gratification” so we selected fewer trees—but
larger trees. We emptied the treasury to purchase the trees so we will have some money raising events in the not too distant future to
replenish our funds.
TDS/Gardenville was very helpful in our tree selection. They helped us select trees that work well on golf courses and are not
“water hogs”. If you travel on Old Lockhart Rd between Bradshaw Rd and FM 1327, you will see the TDS/Gardenville tree nursery.
The nursery has over a thousand trees of various types and sizes.
If you go to Home Depot and select a tree, it will most likely be in a 10 gallon container. The trees we purchased were in containers
ranging in size from 30 gallons to massive 300 gallon containers.
The trees purchased were a Live Oak (300 gallon container), a Red Oak (300 gallon container), an American Elm (250 gallon
container), a Lacebark Elm (200 gallon container), a Monterrey Oak (95 gallon container) and two (2) Vitex trees (30 gallon
containers). The two (2) Vitex trees will be planted along with the Vitex tree donated by Bob Baeumel.
So much for talk about the trees—now for some talk about the course. The flood of 2013 caused a lot of damage to the course that is
not always visible. The flood waters left the areas that were underwater with a covering of creek silt and mud—more commonly
called “cliche”. This is not the type of soil you would like on a golf course but it is what Mother Nature left us.
Ryan is treating the fairways and some of the rough with chemicals designed to break up some of this “cliche”. After the chemicals
are sprayed on the course, he will close the fairway to cart traffic to allow the chemicals to do their work. This may take several
treatments so various holes will be closed at various times.
Here is how you can help in this endeavor. Please observe the “Cart Path Only” signs and do not drive your cart on these fairways.
The fairway is not being closed to punish the golfers but rather to help the fairways recover from the damage. While a cart can
drive on a healthy fairway without causing much damage, driving a cart on a stressed fairway or wet fairway compacts the turf and
keeps the grass from growing.
Please use the cart paths when possible and adhere to the 90 degree crossing rule. Also remember not to drive a cart within 40 yards
of the green—when you are within 40 yards, return to the cart path. As a reminder to return to the cart path you will see our new
wooden “arrow” signs. Remember--a cart driven on a cart path causes no damage to the course.
Please avoid any wet areas on the fairways. I am always amazed to see cart tracks that run right through the middle of a water
puddle when it would take very little—if any—effort to avoid the puddle. Also, please “sand” your divots and repair your ball
marks. Ryan is doing a great job but he really needs our help in maintaining our beautiful course.
If you have any questions or comments about the course, please feel free to contact me at dmilberger@att.net or contact one of the
Green Committee members (Don Bledsoe, Bill Uhls, Gene Arnold, Win Carrik, D.J. Jones, Bob Tucker, Hank Lewandowski, Jim
Alston and Jean Milberger). If we don’t know the answer, we will find out and get back to you. In the meantime, enjoy the new
greens and bunkers and “hit’em straight”.

President’s Message
It has been my pleasure to serve as the President of the Onion Creek Club Ladies Association since June of 2014. I have enjoyed getting to
know many new members and have seen our membership grow this year. At our monthly luncheons on the third Thursday of each month,
from September through May, we have heard terrific speakers and learned more about Austin. Last fall, we enjoyed a bus trip to the horse
races at the Retama Track just north of San Antonio.
We enjoyed a tour of the Governor’s Mansion after hearing a luncheon speaker talk about some of the “inside scoop” about those who have
lived in that mansion. We learned about the significance, history and preservation of the Texas modernist mural by Seymore Fogel that was
commissioned in 1954 for the old American National Bank. We also discovered more about our native plants and will enjoy a spring style
show. In April many members participated in a trip to Texas State to see “Kiss Me Kate.”
This season we enjoyed a great Christmas Dance. Our OCCLA December luncheon continued the tradition of home tours after our brunch at
the Club.
The Onion Creek Ladies Club funds scholarships for the Onion Creek Club employees or their families. Our committee was creative in finding
ways to raise money for that fund. We had raffles at luncheons, an Elvis Birthday party and a silent auction to raise money for our
scholarships.
It has been a busy year full of exciting activities. I encourage each lady to join us again next year and be an active part of this wonderful group
of women. It is nice to know our neighbors and be involved in the activities of our club and neighborhood.

Next up: Audrey Gooden Member/Member (Eclectic) Tournament
Time to grab a partner for our ever-popular tournament: the Audrey Gooden Member/Member which takes place May 18-20. Tournament
directors Ann Bedinger and Teddia Lewis are planning for full participation from 9-hole and 18-hole players, so sign up now with one of the
chairpersons.
It all starts with a pairing (and betting) party Monday night, May 18, when we have an informal meal and look over the teams and review the
rules. This is our one chance for do-overs in a tournament. Play two days in a row in your two-person team (with the same pin positions)
and take the best net score of the two days for each hole. Cash prizes and lots of fun competition.
Y’all Come, for a Saturday General Meeting on May 16th at 2 pm, after Saturday players complete their rounds. We’ll have $5
hamburgers available, and a time to socialize as a whole group. Look for more on this event on the website.
The General Meeting for June is set for Tuesday, June 23. rd. Sign up for a special $10 lunch after play with Social Chair Vicki Kramer.
In the meantime remember….Keeping the head still is golf's one universal, unarguable fundamental.
