KATHERINE LEGGE MEMORIAL LODGE
...a quiet, unique, woodland setting for your next gathering...
The Katherine Legge Memorial Park and Lodge are located on 52 beautiful acres of woodland, a perfect setting for any occasion. The KLM Lodge was designed by architect R. Harold
Zook and built in 1927. It has been designated as a historic landmark by the Village of Hinsdale.
Part of KLM Lodge’s charm can be seen in it’s spiderweb window, a Zook signature he reserved
for his favorite buildings.
The KLM Lodge is available for rental to accommodate private and corporate events such as
weddings and receptions, business meetings, parties, banquets and seminars. The spacious
rooms provide a comfortable, warm atmosphere and a place for recreational activities. KLM
Lodge is truly one of Hinsdale’s jewels.
Picnics are great fun at Katherine Legge Memorial Park. There are two picnic pavilions, each
equipped with charcoal grill, water and electrical access. There are also five permanently installed grills throughout the park. The pavilions and grounds may be reserved by individuals or
groups for a fee. Reservations are required for groups of 25 or more or for use of a pavilion.
Picnic kits containing bats, balls, volleyball with net, horseshoes, kickball, and frisbee are available for rent at your picnic.
Alcoholic beverages are not permitted outside the KLM Lodge on park grounds.

GATEWAY SPECIAL RECREATION ASSOCIATION
The Village of Hinsdale is a member of the
Gateway Special Recreation Association.
Current members also include Oak Brook
Park District, Pleasant Dale Park District,
Burr Ridge Park District, Elmhurst Park
District, Westchester Park District, York
Center Park District, Village of Willowbrook
and the City of Countryside.
These
agencies have pooled resources to contract
with the Ray Graham Association for People
with Disabilities to provide recreational
services for children and adults with
disabilties.
The headquarters for Gateway S.R.A. is in
the Anna Emery Hanson Center, located at
59th and Garfield Streets in Burr Ridge. This
Ray Graham owned and operated facility is
a modern, fully handicapped-accessible
building on a 12 acre site. The Hanson
Center offers ample indoor and outdoor
program space, including a barn and riding
corral for horsemanship instruction. Other
locations in the eight community area also
act as program sites. Gateway S.R.A.
offerings are suited to meet a wide range
of needs and capabilities.
Gateway’s Summer Camps run during the
summer months. The camps are designed
for children, teens and young adults ages
three through twenty-one and include a
variety of activities, including swimming,
horseback riding, sports, nature
activities, arts/crafts and field trips.
Many programs are offered through
Gateway S.R.A. including bowling, bike
riding, Special Olympics training, swimming and tennis. Registration for GATEWAY programs are taken at the Anna
Emery Hanson Center located at 59th
and Garfield Streets.
For families who wish to participate in
more integrated programming through
their local park and recreation departments, Ray Graham Staff are available
to help them choose appropriate park
programs, educate the park instructor
about special needs the individual may
have, accompany the individual to the
program until a smooth transition has
been made, and act as a resource for
the park and recreation department.
This service is offered free to residents
of Gateway S.R.A. member communities.
Gateway is always looking for dedicated
and enthusiastic volunteers to assist
with the programs. If you are interested
in volunteering, or would like additional
information about recreation programs,
please contact the Anna Emery Hanson
Center at 325-3857.

PLATFORM TENNIS
An All-Weather Sport
Platform tennis (a.k.a “paddle”) was first developed in 1928 as the perfect complement to summer
tennis. The peak season for paddle runs from September to April. Players say that there is no better
form of outdoor exercise during the long winter months.
SEASON PASSES
Facilities
We are fortunate in Hinsdale to have the best public
facilities available. Two lighted and heated courts
are located in Burns Field. Four more courts have
been built in Katherine Legge Memorial Park.
Platform tennis passes are required in order to
play or reserve courts and are valid from October
1st, 2005 through September 30th, 2006. For
more information, visit the Park and Recreation
Department at 19 E. Chicago Ave, call (630) 7897090, or e-mail parkrec@villageofhinsdale.org.
Viking Academy Clinic
The top paddle players in the USA will bring
the Viking Academy to KLM from Thursday,
September 22 through Saturday, September
24. These three-hour clinics give you a great
chance to start your season out right. The
registration fee is $100. For information,
contact Paul Wiggin at (630) 986-9322 or

HUSTLE
This is NOT the hustle form of the dance that was
present in the disco era of the 70’s. Today it is a
more exciting and dynamic dance focusing on
women’s styling and men leading her through patterns to “show” her off. The dance focuses on
lead and follow techniques emphasizing flow and
movement as opposed to any kinds of intricate
footwork. The music of the 70’s has been replaced
by a more comfortable and slow form of the music to allow more styling as opposed to the aerobic form of the music of the disco era. This is a
continuation class.

WEST COAST SWING
INTERMEDIATE
West Coast Swing (WCS) had its roots on the
west coast in the 40’s and 50’s and has slowly
moved eastward in the last 10 years. It has captured the fancy of both young and old because of
it’s many variations. It can be danced to a wide
variety of music, such as blues, contemporary,
“beach” music, funk, old standards (Frank Sinatra,
etc.) and many more. It has many of the components of other forms of swing, namely, east coast
swing (jitterbug) lindy, shag (a dance popularized
in the south) and steppin’ (a dance popular in the
Chicago area). For those who like to do free style
dancing, it even has that component. It has often
been described as a smooth, sexy form of swing
dancing and can be danced no matter what your
age. It is a little difficult to learn but, most people
who do, never go back to other forms of swing.
This is a continuation class.
