How to Participate
Benefits of Service-Learning
Step 1: Select the program, such as Brookhaven
Counts or Brookhaven Reads, a special interest group or
campaign, such as Democracy in Action, or agency
where you would like to complete your service hours.
• Satisfaction of making a difference in a
child’s life
• Enhancing your people skills
• Credit in your course, as determined
by your instructor
• Your hours will be recorded on a
continuing education transcript
• Increase of your chances of
winning a scholarship or grant
Step 2: Contact the site and speak with the Site
Director or person in charge of volunteers to find out
what you need to do to begin your service hours, i.e.,
site application, background check, orientation, and
when you can begin.
Step 3: Log on to eCampus Service-Learning Page at
http://ecampus.dcccd.edu and fill out the servicelearning application and disclaimer form. NOTE:
Students who do not complete this step will not receive
service-learning credit. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Step 4: Download a timesheet on the eCampus site
and take it with you each time you perform service
hours. Only your Site Director or the person he/she
designates may sign your timesheet.
If an
unauthorized person signs your timesheet, you will not
receive any credit for that day(s). NO EXCEPTIONS.
NOTE: Timesheets for Brookhaven Counts and
Brookhaven Reads participants are kept at the tutoring
site, so this step does not apply to you. If you are
unable to download a timesheet, you may pick up one
in the SPAR Office, Room S201.
Step 5: Complete the service hours required by your
instructor.
Keep a log of your service-learning
experience to assist you in completing reflection
assignments given by your instructor and/or Reflection
Sessions conducted by the SPAR Office.
Step 6: If required by your instructor, participate in a
Reflection Session held by SPAR and complete the
student survey. For a list of Reflection Session dates,
please visit the eCampus Service-Learning Page or pick
up a list of dates from the SPAR Office. Students who
do not complete this step will not receive servicelearning credit. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Step 7: Return your completed timesheet to your
Service-Learning coordinator by the due date to receive
credit. Please check the online Service-Learning
calendar on eCampus for the official due date.

private, two- and four-year institutions across the
spectrum of higher education. Brookhaven
College puts into practice the ideal of civic
engagement by sharing knowledge and resources
with its communities, creating economic development initiatives, and supporting service and
service-learning efforts in key areas such as
literacy, health care, hunger, homelessness, the
environment, and senior services.
Brookhaven College works to
• provide learning opportunities to
bring the community into the
classroom and to take the classroom
to the community,
• develop student citizenship skills,
• encourage partnerships between the
campus and community, and
• assist faculty members who seek to
