FINANCES Who can help me with my financial decisions? Along the way, you may need to make some big financial decisions or find extra money for bills and treatment. If you would like to seek help from a professional who has extensive knowledge of all the areas listed in this section you may want to see a financial counsellor or financial planner. A financial counsellor can help resolve your money problems and assist with certain aspects of your financial affairs (eg. negotiating payment plans for debts). Free and independent services are offered by community organisations, community legal centres and some government agencies. For information on financial counselling services visit www.fido.gov.au and click on the ‘Free Financial Counselling’ link in the Personal Support section. A financial planner will consider all aspects of your lifestyle, goals and financial requirements and tailor a personal strategy that suits your individual needs. Most financial planners aim to have long term relationships with their clients and will review your needs and strategy as your situation changes. For more information on financial planners please visit www.goodadvice.com.au. How do I find out the cost of my treatment? The cost of your treatment will vary according to your diagnosis and the recommendations of your treating team. Whether you are treated within the public or private system will also have an impact. We encourage you to speak to your team about what the out of pocket costs of your treatment plan may be. Am I eligible for Centrelink benefits? You may be eligible for Centrelink payments and services while you are going through treatment, depending on your financial situation and your ability to earn an income. All Centrelink services have different eligibility requirements. Centrelink will need full access to your personal financial and medical records. You will need to be prepared to fill in a lot of paperwork, visit your local Centrelink office and provide personal records and letters from your doctor. As soon as you are diagnosed, you must call Centrelink on 13 27 17. They can register your diagnosis date and may be able to back pay any payments to this date. Ask for them to send you a ‘Claim for Disability Support Pension or Sickness Allowance’ kit. This kit contains the four booklets that Centrelink use to determine your eligibility: Claim for Disability Support Pension or Sickness Allowance. These are available to people who are unable to work or study temporarily because of illness, injury or disability. Income and Assets Medical Report (Disability Support Pension) Information Booklet. Be aware that the application process can be quite long and take a lot of work. If you find you are stuck and need some advice you can make an appointment to see a Centrelink social worker or a Financial Information Service Officer. They can help you with your application, further information and referrals. Your hospital social worker can also help you complete these forms. The typical length of time for Centrelink to process your claim is up to 49 days. To ensure your claim is processed quickly, ensure you have all your IDs and the three documents completed correctly. Most successful applicants will also receive a Health Care card which can be used to receive cheaper medicines and other concessions. Centrelink has other support options that may be applicable to your situation, so it is a good idea to speak to a staff member about other services that may be helpful to you. For more information on payments and eligibility requirements, please go to www.centrelink.gov.au or call 13 27 17 for more information. Am I eligible for home help?
