The following criteria must be met prior to entering the Paramedic Program here at College of
the Albemarle. Students should bring all of this information to the first night of class.
o Must have a current EMT-Basic certification.
o Must have been a NC EMT-Basic for at least one year.
o Must provide a copy of a current CPR card from the American Heart Association.
o Must have a high school diploma or GED.
o Must successfully complete the COMPASS or ASSET reading, writing, and math test
(COMPASS = at least a score of 81 on the reading test, at least a score of 70 on the
writing test, and at least a score of 45 on the pre-algebra test; ASSET = at least a score of
41 on the reading and writing test, and at least a score of 39 on the pre-algebra test). You
may be exempt from the placement test if you can prove that you have successfully
completed a placement test with a minimum of the above scores or you can provide a
copy of your college transcript documenting a grade of C or better in an English course
and either a MAT 060 course or a college-level algebra course.
o Must have successfully completed an Anatomy and Physiology course for the Emergency
Care Provider or have proof of registration for the Anatomy and Physiology course for
the Emergency Care Provider that will be offered as a co-requisite to the Paramedic
course.
o Must obtain a copy of criminal background record. This can be obtained through the
Clerk of Court for a nominal fee.
o Must provide documentation of the following immunizations:
A. Hepatitis B vaccination series or Waiver Form
B. Tetanus vaccination
C. Current PPD (Tubercular Skin Test)
These records can be obtained from either your family physician office or your local
health department.
o Must be physically able to lift, bend, stand, squat, kneel, and work in small or confined
areas.
o Must take an entrance exam. This is NOT a pass or fail test. It will be given the first night
of class and it is to access the medical knowledge level of students entering the program.

In order to register for the course a Continuing Education Registration Form must be completed.
This can be found on the COA website (http://www.albemarle.edu) under the Workforce
Development and Continuing Education department. You can also come into the Workforce
Development and Continuing Education office and complete one. Our office is located in the
Foreman Center on campus.
Course Fees
Registration Fees: $175.00
Due the same day as registration.
Registration must be completed before the first day of class.
Registration fee may be waived for those affiliated with a Fire, EMS, Rescue, or Law
Enforcement agency in the state of North Carolina.
Medical Liability: $6.50
This is a one-time fee for a $1,000,000.00 insurance policy.
This insurance is provided to help cover students in the case of medical errors or
omissions.
All students are required to have this insurance coverage.
Due the same day as registration.
