See you all soon, Brenda Members organizing 1 Annual Golf Fundraiser st Team Ryan was founded to honor daughter, Ryan Christian, who was lost after a three year struggle with an extremely rare form of cancer. Based here in Westerville, our mission is to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research. The Team Ryan Charitable Foundation is recognized by the IRS as a public charity and has 501c3 status. Ryan was only 8 years old when she was diagnosed with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma, a rare cancer of the adrenal gland. She was diagnosed as Stage 4, meaning the cancer had spread to her lungs. After the massive tumor was removed Ryan went through eight of the most intense rounds of chemotherapy any child can endure. Doctors at St Jude Children's Research Hospital were amazed that there was no evidence of cancer in Ryan. But, sadly, after only nine months, this terrible cancer returned. There is no cure for this type of cancer if the initial treatment does not work. Some cancers, like Ryan's, are so rare that drug companies will not fund the much needed research to save kids like Ryan. After many surgeries to remove tumors and several clinical trials, we lost Ryan, here in Columbus, on January 24th, 2013. When breakthroughs in research are made in pediatric cancer, these cures are shared throughout the entire world. Funding for research is vital. You can make a difference and help save children. The Golf Fundraiser on June 26th at Little Turtle GC will benefit the Research Institute of Nationwide Children's Hospital. Please visit our website, www.teamryanfoundation.org to read Ryan's story, sign up for the golf event and get involved. Join our team, Team Ryan, in saving children's lives. While a lot depends on that sweet, gentle, and loving Mother Nature (insert sarcasm here), there are numerous tasks that we have already been working on over the winter and others we will be starting within the coming weeks to assure that the course is back to form as soon as possible. Let’s take a look at one of the most hotly talked about aspects of any golf course, the bunkers. While bunkers were designed and defined as hazards, they have become more and more of a debated topic between membership and superintendents nationwide. It’s not uncommon these days to see better players and tour pros actually use bunkers as bail-outs rather than hit into Brian Wilcomb the deep, more penal rough that graces some greens surrounds and fairways. Everyone wants firm yet cushiony lies with miles of sand beneath their FootJoys. The sand must be dry, but not so dry to conjure up images of the Sahara before ones potential sand save, or the elusive “sandy”. It’s with this in mind that I write this article. By USGA standards, bunkers should have approximately 4 inches of sand in the bottom of the bunker and subsequently an average of 2 inches on the slopes. This, in itself is not hard to maintain. Even though good ol’ Mother Nature tries her hardest to foul that up at every chance (remember sweet, gentle, and loving? Yeah…right) most bunkers and maintenance crews are equipped to deal with rain. The one limiting factor in a bunker however, is the life expectancy of the sand. Yes, that is an actual term and is defined by the governing folk over at the USGA. So what is the life expectancy of a bunker? 20-25 years. How can that be? The sand’s not a living, breathing thing right? If you were to look at a single grain of sand under a microscope, you would see something that is quite angular and jagged. These attributes allow the sand particles to settle and “lock” themselves in place. This is why sand stays up on severe bunker faces and doesn’t slide down to the bottom…without the help of Mother Nature. One good, fast, and hard rain and the sand succumbs and flows to the bottom in a soupy mess. Thus, the sand pro comes out along with the water pumps and the process of “fixing” bunkers begins. Now you’re probably either asleep, or asking yourself “Brian, do you have a point or are you just slapping keys on the laptop now?” A little of both so here’s where I tie it all together. Our bunkers at Little Turtle are indeed old. Not anywhere old enough where the terms “renovation”, “re-construction”, or “that superintendent’s an idiot” need to come to mind however! Over the years, the angular, sharp edges of the sand particle have eroded producing a rounder particle that moves easier. When this happens, more sand tends to find its way to the bottom of the bunker resulting in a bunker that seems like there isn’t enough sand to be playable. Once this happens over a period of time, and the sand starts to compact at the bottom, all hope seems to be lost. It is with this in mind that we’ve spent a considerable amount of time this winter working on our sand pro to make sure it has the ability to A) find the sand reserves in each bunker, B) push an adequate amount of sand to the appropriate areas, and C) keep the bunkers firm yet fluffy enough to be playable. We will be starting to put bunkers back together in the next week or two. This is normally a long, daunting process the first time out every year. Each bunker, normally gets a new edge or lip cut into it, it has the available sand inventoried and then re-distributed to form what is considered a playable bunker. From day one of my employment at LTGC, bunkers were stressed as a sticking point for membership. We have heard those cries and will continue to strive for the ever elusive “uniform” bunker. There is always the possibility of needing more sand, but we try not to order too much sand as it is literally the definition of throwing money at the problem. In closing, I would encourage everyone to join myself and other members for one of our “Sweat Equity Saturdays” that are coming up. They are a great, informal way to get out, meet or socialize with other members and myself while giving back a few hours of labor to LTGC. Last year we spent 4 hours picking up sticks and the benefits were astronomical. Not only did the membership save the maintenance dept a weeks-worth of man hours, but we were able to discuss in great detail, concerns, compliments, highlights and lowlights of the course. A little info can go a long way when it reaches the right set of ears and I look forward to doing more of the same this year. So with that being said, free up some time for your club and come help out. You will be truly amazed at the good time you will have and the help you will provide in a short amount of time! Until the next article (which is open for discussion as to what everyone wants to learn or talk about) thank you for the time and stay out of the bunker! (But, if you happen to get in one, rest assured it will be as good as we can get them) Brian Wilcomb, Golf Course Superintendent Little Turtle Golf Club, 5400 Little Turtle Way, Westerville, OH 43081 (614) 882-5920 main phone, (614) 882-5940 Golf Shop, (614) 212-7586 fax, www.LittleTurtleGC.com 2015 Little Turtle Golf Club MEN’S AND LADIES’ YELLOW BALL TOURNAMENT Saturday, April 18th COST: $45 plus Cart RULES AND FORMATS Teams will be selected by the Golf Shop using the ABCD format. The Yellow Ball Score may be used in the Two Net Best Ball score but does not necessarily have to be used. Each team will choose a revolving order for play. Each team member will have four designated holes to use the Yellow Ball. Teams should choose their order of play by the handicap number of each hole in order to maximize each player’s individual handicap to gain the most shots per player on his/her holes using the Yellow Ball.
