Catch-22 Schedule
This schedule will help you keep up with the reading assignment of Catch-22. You will be REQUIRED to keep up
with the reading schedule as directed. Reading assignments that are shown on a Monday are due to be finished by
the Friday of the same week.
Example: Reading assigned Monday, September 23rd must be completed by Friday, September 28th
You are responsible for your reading assignments every week. There will be assignments due along the way to
ensure that you are keeping up with your reading. There will also be random reading quizzes to assure that you
are reading what you are supposed to. There will be two assessments due the week before Winter Break. (See
two pages after calendar).
Remember: When you are in college, all reading will be independent. You must keep yourself motivated. This is
GOOD practice for college!
Assignments for Catch-22:
Edublogs (25 points each post):
You will be required to blog about your reading at least FOUR times throughout the book. These blogs must
be posted to the Edublog you set up in the computer lab at the beginning of the quarter. The blog must be
rich in thought and effort must be shown. Students may (and are encouraged to) add images, music or
videos to explain a specific quote, character or theme that you found interesting in your reading. You must
also read and respond to at least 2 other students’ blog posts. (See attached Rubric)
Discussion Questions (50 points each checkpoint):
Students will be responsible for the discussion questions about each chapter. They will be due at different
checkpoints throughout the semester. Students may work together on these questions but should turn in
work individually. THIS DOES NOT CONDONE ONE STUDENT DOING THE WORK AND THE OTHERS
COPYING. Responses should be approximately 3 sentences long for each question. No discussion questions
for chapters 40-42. (See attached Rubric)
Essay (100 points):

The essay for Catch-22 will be due 12/20 at the beginning of class. The paper must be 2-3 pages in length in MLA
format and must contain ample textual evidence. (Both of these items will be reviewed in class before the due
date.) The essay must use proper quotations and must answer the essay prompt thoroughly. (See Rubric below)
Essay Question Choices:
Most of the characters in Catch-22 are over-the-top in the sense that, in many ways, they are caricatures of
themselves. What must Heller have known about humanity to make them all so recognizable?
What do you believe is Heller’s view of a capitalistic society?
Is Catch-22 a comic novel or a story of morality? Explain.
What does Catch-22 say about war?
Discuss the literary significance of Catch-22 and its relevance in the 21st Century.
How does Catch-22 compare to other war stories you have read? How does it compare to other satires?
How might Catch-22 be described as an allegory?
Discuss how the novel can be described as a struggle between the individual and an institution.
Discuss the meaning of sanity as it applies to the story.
Project (100 points):
Choose one of the following projects to be presented the week of 12/16.
Heroes and Superheroes. Create a superhero or supervillain based on a character from the novel. Describe
his/her characteristics and why they would be important to your character. Also describe which characteristics
he/she would most want to possess. Create a visual representation/costume for each superhero/supervillain.
Scale Model or Costume Design. Fabricate a scale model of the setting, or design/fabricate/model a costume
that could be worn by one or more of the characters.
Create a home page. Select several characters and design a home page for each of them, picking out
appropriate backgrounds and pictures and then creating information that would tell a viewer about your character.
Also, create links to at least five different sites that you think your character would be interested in. Then write up
and post on the page an explanation of how you made the decisions you did and what you believe this tells us
about the character. An in-depth Facebook profile or Twitter Account with active posts would also be acceptable.
Scrapbook. Think about all of the mementos you would put in a scrapbook, then create one for your character,
cutting out pictures from magazines or drawing the mementos he or she would have in a scrapbook. Provide
written justification for your scrapbooking choices.
Create a board game based on the novel. And make it awesome so Mr. Hall, Ms. Berry, and I can play it
together after school. 
Poetry. Write three poems in response to the novel. The poems can be about the characters, where the book took
place, or the themes in the book.
Create a soundtrack for the novel or a character's personal playlist. Provide written justification for the
playlist/soundtrack by writing a paragraph connecting each song to the novel. Make a hard copy on an actual CD
so I can add it to my personal collection. No, you won’t get it back. It’s mine now. Bwa ha ha! Thanks! 
