A Message from College
Possible Leadership
College Possible students are earning college degrees at ten times the rate of their
peers. According to a recent Harvard study, College Possible students are twice as likely
to enroll in a four-year college or university as students with similar backgrounds. Once on
campus, College Possible students are graduating at five times the rate of other low-income
students.
Over the past 12 years, College Possible’s proven model has served more than 50,000
students through our programs, but the socioeconomic achievement gap persists. Students
from upper-income families are ten times more likely to earn a college degree by
age 24 than their low-income peers, even though a college degree offers the likeliest path
out of poverty. Having achieved unprecedented results, we feel an imperative to bring our
services to the thousands of students who need them across the country each year.
Levi Downs, MD
College Possible Board Chair &
University of Minnesota Medical
School Associate Professor
College Possible is progressing toward our goal of reaching 20,000 students in 10 cities
annually by 2020, as outlined in our strategic plan. This fall, the Board of Directors
approved Portland, Oregon, as College Possible’s fourth site. With school partnerships
already in place, we will serve our first Portland students this spring.
College Possible’s results continued to be top-of-field in 2011-12 while serving more
students than ever before. In addition, College Possible earned national recognition by
receiving the Community Partnership Award from Mutual of America, and Jim McCorkell
was honored as the sole recipient of Harvard Kennedy School’s Alumni Achievement
Award. College Possible was also recently selected from hundreds of nominations spanning
40 countries to receive the Citi/Financial Times Ingenuity Award for Education.

“When I joined College Possible someone was telling me for the first time that I could do
this and that college really was possible,” said Rosa Sanchez, Saint Joan Antida High School
Class of 2012. After being accepted to six colleges, this fall she is attending Marquette
University loan-free.
We believe in the power of a college degree and the doors it can open. Thank you for
supporting Rosa and the nearly 12,000 students we will serve in 2012-13 as they live up to
their potential and capture the future they deserve.

Systemic change
Students from upper-income families are ten
times more likely to earn a college degree than
their low-income peers, yet the surest path out
of poverty is a college degree. College Possible
creates systemic change by closing the college
access gap for low-income students, thereby
putting an end to multi-generational poverty for
low-income families.

Expansion to Portland
In 2012, College Possible was Recruited into Portland, Oregon, by local leaders committed
to making ITs proven model part of The community’s solution for closing the achievement
gap. Today, only 28% of Oregonians complete their college degree, Yet the state needs
123,000 new postsecondary educated workers by 2018. Portland’s partnership with College
Possible is putting a College Degree within reach of more of its students. College Possible

A 2011 Harvard study shows that College Possible
more than doubles the chance a low-income
student will enroll in a four-year college or
university. The evaluation, a historical comparison
analysis spanning multiple years, was conducted
by researcher Dr. Chris Avery by comparing College
Possible students to their similar profile peers who
did not participate in the program. Dr. Avery is also

College Possible was the first organization in the country to harness the
power of national service to provide intensive college coaching to lowincome students. Over the past 13 years, College Possible has refined its
program to be an efficient model providing top-of-field results.
Highly replicable: College Possible has successfully
delivered its services in 35 high schools including public, charter
and private schools across three diverse metropolitan areas.
cost effective: College Possible is one-seventh the cost of
similar programs. An independent analysis found College Possible
yields a more than 300% return on investment to society over the
course of a student’s life.

JunioR YEAR
What would you do if you had a million
dollars? For Benson High School student Donta
Crittenden, the answer is simple: “Use that money
to help others.”
The second youngest of seven kids, Donta cares
deeply about family and those around him. He dreams
of becoming a therapist so he can help people. Before
College Possible, those dreams seemed impossible
because no one else in his family had graduated from
high school or attended college. The odds against
him seemed overwhelming.
“I have learned so much from
my coaches. I will never forget
their effort. Plus, they’re
awesome to spend time with.”
But Donta is taking the steps necessary to ensure
he reaches his dreams. Under the guidance of his
College Possible coach, he achieved an impressive 42
percent increase on his ACT score. Thanks to College
Possible, he says, he can see the way to a better life.
“College Possible is setting me on the path to
becoming the person I want to be,” Donta said.
“Someday, I will know exactly how to talk to my kids
about how to get into college.”

in making college financially feasible. In addition,
95% of students completed the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

SENIOR YEAR
The 10th of 12 siblings, Koyoua Vang WAS
the first in her family to earn admission to a fouryear college. Her family always encouraged her to
finish high school and pursue a college degree, but
Koyoua needed guidance on how to get started.
“I don’t know if I would’ve had the chance or the
confidence to visit a college campus and talk with
college students if it hadn’t been for College Possible,”
Koyoua said.
“I’m the first person in my family
to go to a four-year college.
There was no one to explain how
to apply or what to fill out. My
coach helped me with every Step.”
College Possible supported Koyoua through five
ACT tests her junior year and the challenging process
of college applications during her senior year. She
can still perfectly recall the moment when she found
out she had been accepted to her top choice school –
Marquette University.
“My acceptance letter came in this really nice folder
that said Marquette on the cover,” Koyoua said.
“When I read that I was accepted, I was so happy I
almost screamed! All the hard work was worth it!”

From the Day her family arrived in the
United States, Bibi Abdalla knew that she and her
younger siblings needed to go to college. “At the
same time, we didn’t know where to get support,” she
recalls. “I thought I couldn’t afford to go to college.
How could I?”
“My college education helped
Me improve my communication
skills and understand how to
problem solve. College built the
framework of who I am and what
I Am Capable OF.”
Through College Possible, Bibi learned about the
ACT, scholarships and financial aid. With this
guidance and ongoing support from her college
coach, Bibi earned a degree in political science from
the College of St. Benedict with very little debt.
“Without College Possible, my college years would
have been focused on paying for college by working
two or three jobs rather than focusing on learning,”
Bibi said.

pursuing her interest in food security in underserved
countries as a senior business analyst.

On track early
College planning workshops provide 9th and 10th
grade students information critical to getting on
the college track early. Under the guidance of
AmeriCorps members, College Possible seniors
deliver an interactive curriculum explaining the
college admission process. Upperclassmen, who
serve as compelling messengers to their younger
peers, also gain leadership experience.

been
talking
about
college since the seventh grade when he decided he
wanted to become a nurse. After a college planning
workshop led by College Possible high school seniors,
for the first time, he understood the steps he needed
to take to reach that goal.
“To go to College and be
successful you have to be
dedicated. It has to be something
you want and you have to be
desperate for it.”
There were a lot of things about college he was not
familiar with, but what really stood out for him was
another message: the importance of getting on the
right track in high school by having good attendance
and choosing a challenging course load.
Kyril took his peers’ advice and not only signed
up for a full schedule of Advanced Placement and
honors classes, but College Possible as well. These
choices mean a lot more work, but he knows it will
pay off when he applies to colleges next year.
“I’m really excited to go to college,” Kyril said. “I want
to accomplish my goals and meet the expectations
I’ve set for myself.”

Maribel
Andrade understands the impact of the program
firsthand. But it took serving two terms as an
AmeriCorps member to truly appreciate the support
she received. “As a student, I thought College
Possible was something everyone had access to
because everyone should,” Maribel said.
“College Possible served me and
it was life-changing. I wanted to
bring that change to others.”
After graduating with a degree in criminal justice from
Marquette University, Maribel weighed her options.
She strongly considered accepting a position with
the Milwaukee Police Department, but instead chose
to return to her alma mater, Minneapolis Roosevelt
High School, to become a College Possible coach.
“Serving was my way to give back and do something
for students who are in the same circumstances I was
in high school,” Maribel said.
After building a strong relationship with the
principal and staff during her two terms of service,
the administration at Roosevelt offered her a job.
Now Maribel is using her experience as a coach to
ensure more Roosevelt students graduate with the
skills to succeed in college.

When Lori Rolfson sat down to read the
Sunday paper two years ago, an article about College
Possible caught her eye. She immediately called the
executive director to learn more about the program
and had the chance to visit a high school and see
students and coaches in action.
“When I saw how it works and what it does, I saw
what a difference it makes,” Lori said. “College
Possible provides great support, but in the end the
students are the ones making it happen.”
“I hope more people learn about
the organization and see the
value in it. Not only the value for
the students, but the ultimate
value for the community.”
Rolfson gave personally to the program but wanted
to do more. To spread the word about College
Possible, she planned an After Admission event with
her employer, We Energies. The event served as a
way for College Possible students enrolled in college
to network with employees, hear advice on résumé
building and learn about the many opportunities a
college degree can bring.
“I hope students see a degree as a way to open
doors,” Lori said. “You don’t have to know exactly
what you want to do; you just need that ticket to get
in the door.”

College Possible Omaha Board member
and donor Leslie Garth was raised in Alabama by her
maternal grandmother who worked long hours to
support her after a stroke left her grandfather unable
to work in the coal mines around Carbon Hill.
“We may have been financially underprivileged
but our family was well respected and academically
gifted,” said Leslie, a University of Alabama graduate
in industrial engineering and Director of Fleet
Management with the Car Management division of
Union Pacific Railroad.
“There were Caring Adults in my
town who were determined that
no child’s potential would be
wasted. I want to pass that gift
along.”
She understands the importance of having committed
individuals walk alongside students, lifting them up
to help them achieve their full potential. “When I
learned of the work College Possible was starting
in Omaha, I wanted to serve and help the program
grow in our community. Not only am I willing to
give my time, financial resources and expertise, but
I also serve as an example of what can be achieved
through education.”

Management, Union Pacific Railroad

Bill McKinney’s connection to college
Possible precedes the organization’s founding. Inspired by the chance to help low-income students
have the same opportunities he did, Bill laid the
foundation for College Possible’s success by helping
to create the organization’s first business plan.
“I hope students find college to be as life-changing
as it was for me,” he said. “It’s a place to explore,
develop lifelong friendships and build critical skills.”
“I believe that access to high
quality education is one of the
bedrock elements of America’s
success as a nation socially,
politically and economically.”
Bill is buoyed by the dreams College Possible
students have for their future. “They see college as
the beginning of something great. The optimism
they display reinforces my confidence in the future.”
Today, Bill and his wife Amy continue to support
the organization that delivered on its early promise.
“College Possible has demonstrated an ability to
close the achievement gap, and they do it at a low
cost,” Bill said. “College Possible simply delivers
outstanding value to society.”
Bill McKinney, Vice President, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans And Former
College Possible Board Member, with Wife, Amy, Adjunct Math Instructor, Anthem
College, and Family
