Dear Parents,
Your son/daughter has enrolled in Advanced Placement Biology, a class designed to
approximate an entry-level college biology course. The curriculum is intense, fast-paced and
there is considerable class emphasis placed on laboratory activities. Most class time will focus
on the analysis and application of themes to specific topics and concepts. These topic and
concepts will primarily need to be learned independently with much of the initial learning
happening at home. In order for your son/daughter to be successful it is imperative that
he/she have a home environment that is conducive to study. Please make every effort to
ensure that your son/daughter has the opportunity to study with minimal interruption.
Students enrolled in AP Bio are required to take the AP Bio exam and it is expected that
they devote a minimum of EIGHT study hours per week (outside of class) to learning the
necessary concepts and details.
The main focus of AP Biology, to prepare the students for the AP exam in May, will be
achieved by expanding upon students' detailed knowledge of biology and chemistry while
focusing on unifying biological themes. Considerable time will be spent on improving not only
test-taking strategies but also critical thinking, analytical and writing skills.
I recognize the daunting task ahead of us all but know that success will come with hard
work, diligence, and a community of support. I look forward to working with you and your
