HAIR CREATIVE BIOS:
GEROME RAGNI (Co-Creator) Born and raised in Pittsburgh from a large Italian
family. After a stint in the Air Force, as a young actor he won the Barter Theatre Award.
He appeared on Broadway in the John Gielgud/Richard Burton Hamlet, starred in The
Knack Off-Broadway and studied acting and new experimental theatre techniques with
Nola Chilton and Joseph Chaikin and the Open Theater. An unusual stage presence, he
created the role of Berger in HAIR. Movie: Lions Love. He wrote the Broadway musical
Dude with music by Galt MacDermot and co-authored the yet-to-be-seen Sun.
JAMES RADO (Co-Creator) Student of acting with Paula & Lee Strasberg in early
1960s. Broadway: Richard the Lionhearted in The Lion in Winter, and Claude in HAIR.
Feature Film: Agnes Varda's Lions Love. Wrote the music and the lyrics for off-B’way
Rainbow (1972). Collaborated with Gerome Ragni on Sun, comedic Orwellian musical
(1980s). Directed American actors in European bus-and-truck tours of HAIR during the
late 1990s. New work: music and lyrics of A Cool Soldier; The White Haunted House,
co-authoring the book as well with his brother, Ted Rado.
GALT MacDERMOT (Composer) is best known for the music he wrote for his Tony
Award winning scores for HAIR and Two Gentlemen of Verona. His work spans the
gamut of performing arts and he draws inspiration from a wealth of musical styles,
crossing the boundaries of jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, classical styles and rap. MacDermot
formed the New Pulse Jazz Band in 1979,which features his original music played by

DIANE PAULUS (Director). Broadway and London's West End: HAIR (2009 Tony
Award winner). Creator and director of The Donkey Show, a disco adaptation of A
Midsummer Night's Dream, which ran Off-Broadway, now playing at the A.R.T. Recent
theater and opera work include Johnny Baseball; Best of Both Worlds; Mondo Della
Luna; Kiss Me, Kate; and Lost Highway. Diane is the Artistic Director of the American
Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA, and a Professor of the Practice of Theater at
Harvard University.
KAROLE ARMITAGE (Choreographer) Tony nominated choreographer (HAIR ’09),
Artistic Director of Armitage Gone! Dance, is renowned for pushing boundaries to create
contemporary works that blend dance, music and art. Armitage has choreographed for
major dance companies throughout Europe and the U.S. and has directed operas for
leading European houses. Known for her collaborations with important contemporary
artists (Jeff Koons, Brice Marden) and pop icons (Madonna, Michael Jackson) she made
her Broadway debut in ’08 with Passing Strange.

Additional theater credits include The Public Theater’s production of HAIR in 2007,
Nerds: A Musical Software Satire, Monica! The Musical, and Laugh Whore. TV: “The
Tony Danza Show,” “Temptation” and music for commercials. She graduated Phi Beta
Kappa from Vassar with a degree in Urban Planning.
