TQC is made possible by the Maryland

UMBC College of Natural and
Mathematical Sciences, and the
UMBC Departments of Chemistry &
Biochemistry and Education
Teacher Quality in Chemistry Program at UMBC
UMBC is now accepting applications for
the sixth year of its comprehensive, fourphase teacher professional development
program in chemistry. TQC is designed
to help participants to become more
highly qualified through face-to-face
and online instruction with UMBC
Chemistry faculty.
Event Schedule*
PHASE ONE
Preparatory Instruction
March 31 (orientation and introduction), April
7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5, 2015 - 5:00 to 8:00
p.m. with supplemental online exercises and
meetings
Participants learn and practice inquirybased teaching strategies and work with
the TQC education coordinator to
develop specific classroom
applications for course concepts and
procedures.
PHASE TWO
"Hands-On" 10-day Summer
Chemistry Practicum
July 6 – 17, 2015, weekends excluded - 9:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily
•
Workshop experiences, which feature
hands-on instruction and practice
teaching sessions, are designed to be
easily repeated by participants in their
classrooms and to reinforce teacher
knowledge of chemistry topics.
PHASE THREE
Follow-up Reflection Session
November 13, 2015 - 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Option 1: Up to $2,287.50
from attendance-based
stipends ($150/full day or
$75/afternoon) OR
•
Option 2: Four graduate
credits in Chemistry and free
tuition/application fees upon
satisfactory completion of
program
•
Both options include: Free
course books, lab notebooks,
and manuals,
•
Free campus housing during
the ten-day summer session
to a limited number of
participants, and
•
Opportunity to apply for
limited child-care
supplements
Participants will leave the program with
at least four new and complete lesson
plans that conform to Maryland Core
Learning Goals and the Next Generation
Science Standards.
Guided self-evaluations using UMBC
Department of Education resources help
to ensure that participants master new
laboratory and pedagogy skills and can
successfully implement the lesson plans
they have developed for their
classrooms.
