Record weather changes from day to day (CSS Earth Science 3.b) (First grade) Materials: Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, by Judi Barrett Books about weather vanes Writing paper Drawing paper Pencils Crayons or colored markers Daily newspaper Map of the United States Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Your child can read information textbooks or visit web sites and gather information on clouds and lightning, and how they are formed. Your child will write a paragraph telling about how clouds are made. He/she will revise the paragraph for selling, punctuation, and legibility. Using the newspaper or Internet, you child can find maps with today’s temperatures. He/She will record the temperature of the city where they live, and at least five other locations in the country. Maybe the city where grandma and grandpa live, or where his/her aunt and uncle live, etc. Record the temperatures on the United States map. Date the map with today’s date. Your child can read books about weather vanes, or go to sites on the Internet relating to weather vanes and the history of weather vanes. Have them look for pictures of weather vanes. Have your child draw a picture of a weather vane they would like to have. Evaluation/Assessment: The child will write a simple paragraph about what they have learned about weather vanes. Extensions: Have your child learn about a balanced meal. Draw a picture of his/her favorite meal and label the food groups for each item. Use a paper plate!
