UNCG SUMMER MUSIC CAMP
July 10 – 15
&
July 17 – 22, 2016
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to again announce plans for Summer Music Camp, the largest university music
camp in America! This summer we will offer two one-week camps, serving over 1,850 musicians, with programs in band, mixed chorus,
orchestra, and piano. Join us for a great musical experience!
Students at camp are under the leadership and guidance of the artist-faculty of the UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance, long
recognized as a national leader in musical excellence. In addition, distinguished music teachers, performers, and conductors from throughout
the state and nation will join the staff of Summer Music Camp to ensure that each student receives the highest quality instruction available.
Ensemble performance in band, chorus, or orchestra will be emphasized and each camp will conclude on Friday evening with a concert
for parents, relatives, friends, and area residents. Classes in basic musicianship, as well as recital performances and sectional rehearsals
by the camp staff members will serve to balance the total program. A private lesson on your instrument, in voice, or on piano is an
available option to all campers.
PRIVATE LESSONS
For students who wish to take a private lesson on their instrument or voice, a 30 minute private lesson is an available option for all campers.
Students in grades 8 – 12 only may also request a 60 minute private lesson. The fee for one 30 minute lesson is $20. A 60 minute lesson is
$40 and is recommended only for students in grades 8 – 12. A private lesson on piano is also available to orchestra, band or mixed chorus
students if requested in advance. Prior piano experience is required (no beginner pianists) and the fee is also $40 for a one-hour lesson.

IMPORTANT CAMP INFORMATION
HOUSING, MEALS, & SUPERVISION
Camp students, except day campers, will be housed in air conditioned
UNCG residence halls and will eat all meals in the nearby University
Dining Hall. Campers must bring their own sheets, towels, and
pillow from home. Camp students will be housed on a two per
room basis. You may wish to find a roommate who is also attending
camp. Housing for Friday night, at the end of camp, is not provided.
Meals begin with dinner on Sunday and end with dinner on Friday –
16 meals in all. All meals will be served cafeteria style and students
will be allowed to eat as much food as they wish at every meal with
a wide variety of choices.
FREE TIME & RECREATION
To balance the musical and educational experiences of Summer
Music Camp, there is a brief opportunity for free time each afternoon.
Camp students will have time to relax, visit the student center and
bookstore, or have a snack. Other popular activities at camp include
two evening movies and a party on Thursday night. Activities are
under the careful guidance of the Music Camp Staff as the wellbeing of each camper is our foremost concern.
EQUIPMENT
Each band and orchestra student will be expected to furnish his
or her own instrument and bring a folding metal music stand.
A limited number of musical instruments such as string basses,
concert percussion equipment, and pianos will be available from
the School of Music.
PIANO CAMP
Piano Camp will be available to students from Grades 6 through
12 who have studied piano for at least two years. Instruction in
piano technique, keyboard literature, basic musicianship, ensemble
playing and theory will be a part of the camp. Each student will
receive two half-hour private piano lessons during the camp and
will likely be introduced to the organ, harpsichord, and fortepiano.
All Piano Camp students will also participate by singing in a mixed
chorus. Total prices for Piano Camp are $515 for Plan 1 and $425
for Plan 2 (both include private lessons).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
After your application has been received and accepted, we will
forward additional material to you. This will include when and where
to come, what to bring, a medical history/permission for treatment
form, a map, a sample schedule, and all the other information
needed to plan your trip.
While staying in the UNCG residence halls, all music camp students
will be under the careful supervision of the Music Camp Staff.
More than 80 counselors will be living with the campers each week
monitoring all aspects of camp life. For additional details, including
Frequently Asked Questions, sample schedules, supervision and
safety, and day camper info, visit our website at www.smcamp.org.
HEALTH CARE
In the event of an illness or injury to a student at camp, the staff
will escort that student to the Summer Music Camp Registered
Nurse for prompt, professional medical care. In the unlikely event
that a student would need to see a physician or visit a hospital,
immediate transportation and an escort would be provided. Any
injury, no matter how slight, will be reported at once to the parent.
Costs resulting from a doctor visit, prescription medication, x-rays,
lab work or hospital treatment are the responsibility of the parent.
REFUNDS
You may cancel your application for Summer Music Camp and
receive a refund less $50.00 (non-refundable portion on all camp
fee plans) if the request is made two weeks prior to the opening of
that week. No money will be refunded for any reason after the two
week deadline. Students arriving late for camp or leaving early are
not eligible for a refund of any amount. The Camp Membership
is not transferable to anyone else. The initial $50.00 registration
deposit is not refundable for any reason.
