The Prometheus Academy Dual Credit Program with Richland College (Spring 2015) Returning Students begin registration: November 18th,2014–Tuesday New Students begin registration: November 24th,2014–Monday Fall Admission Deadline: January 6th,2015–Tuesday Finalize Test Scores Deadline: January 6th,2015–Tuesday Apply online at Richland College Website: www1.dcccd.edu/stuapp Note for Online Application: Parents should not to panic when it codes them OUT OF STATE—it codes all underage students that way until Richland has all the paperwork in. When they complete the online app process, it will give them a DCCCD/Richland ID#. If it doesn’t, it will tell them why and they will need to MAKE NOTE of the APPLICATION # so we can retrieve them from the system! On the Prometheus website is a link to the Dual Credit Application packet for The Prometheus Academy Students, which outlines the registration process. Richland college also needs an OFFICIAL transcript that shows completion of 9th and 10th grade, at least 12 units or 24 classes. The Prometheus Academy is pleased to announce a significant new service for our high-school students to increase their opportunities for education. Through a special agreement with Richland College, all of our students can now take up to three college classes at Richland College. Prometheus collects a small processing fee ($50 per student, per semester regardless of the number of classes taken) to reimburse expenses. The student will be responsible for books and any other required classroom materials. Background DCCCD (Dallas County Community College District) offers free tuition and fees for dual-enrolled students living inside Dallas County, aka residents. (Resident students are able to enroll without going through Prometheus.) However, we have a large number of students living outside Dallas County. Non-resident students have had to pay higher-than resident rates for classes. This special agreement between The Prometheus Academy and Richland College (a DCCCD campus) allows all of our students the same access to Richland College courses, regardless of where they live in Dallas. Prometheus will collect a $50 processing fee, per student per semester for this service. Classes While most DE students focus on the core courses (for example, English, History, and Math), they can take any class they choose, including online classes (that is, distance learning). The first semester students are limited to two college classes, but if they earn a 3.0 GPA, they are allowed to take 3 classes the following semester, and for as long as they maintain a 3.0 GPA. Richland College is Enrolling Now for Spring 2015. Here is their list of credit courses: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/schedules/spring.php Questions If you have questions about dual enrollment, or this process, contact Deborah Hill at deborah.hill@theprometheusacademy.comfirst, rather than contact DCCCD or Richland College. An exemption form for will also be accepted. http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/MeningitisExemptionForm.pdf Registration Process This isn’t as hard as it looks—promise. Students enrolling for the first time must complete the entire process. Below is a distillation (and I hope, clarification) of the process described here: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/process.php 1) First, the student (or parent) completes an online application (DCCCD Admission Application for High School Students at https://www1.dcccd.edu/stuapp/) 2) In a few hours, you’ll get a response via eMail. Record your student identification number, and print a copy of your Admission Results page to submit with your other paperwork. 3) Next, set up your eConnect account, http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/econnect.pdf 4) Print the forms in the Application packet: a. Complete the High School Student Enrollment Form, which includes a list of the classes and section numbers you want to take. Turn it into Deborah Hill for her signature with a check payable to Prometheus for $50. This is the only form you turn in to Mrs. Hill; everything else goes directly to Richland College, preferably in one fax or envelope. b. Complete the DCCCD Consent to Emergency Treatment c. Complete the FERPA/Registration by Proxy form. This allows the parent (or whomever indicated) to have access to the student’s records. d. Print your official high school transcript, ensuring it shows at least a Junior standing and 3.0 GPA. For home schooled students, DCCD requires that the principal’s signature be notarized. The transcript doesn’t have to be exhaustive; don’t list any courses you want to take through DE. e. Prepare a copy of your qualifying scores (see requirements #4 above). f. Provide documentation of meningitis vaccination, or exemption form. Exemption online form: https://corequestjc.dshs.texas.gov/ Verification form: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/MeningitisVerificationForm.pdf g. Compile forms b through f and send them via fax, eMail, or snail mail to: Bonnie Hueston, Dean, Educational transitions and Dual Credit Advisor bonniehueston@dcccd.edu DCCCD/Richland College 12800 Abrams Road, Crockett Hall C192C Dallas, TX 75243 972.761.6815 office 972.761.6877 fax The Prometheus Academy—Dual Credit Program with Richland College (Spring 2015) Page |2 5) Keep checking your eConnect account to verify you are successfully enrolled in the courses you requested. If there is a problem, Mrs. Hueston will contact you directly. Students returning during the same school year only have to submit the High School Student Enrollment Form (requesting classes) to Mrs Hill. About Dual Enrollment (DE) Dual Enrollment is a program where students ready for more challenging work can enroll simultaneously as a college student and as a high-school student. They attend classes on the college campus, alongside ‘regular’ college students. They build an official college transcript, while you list their courses on your homeschool highschool transcript. Advantages of Dual Enrollment The most obvious advantage is financial. Many families find the dual-enrollment program an excellent way to reduce the cost of a university education. College tuition is expensive, and except for a small fee, this opportunity is free. Many college admission departments value students with DE classes because they have shown they can perform well in a real classroom setting. Some students complete an Associate of Arts degree (2 years) or professional certificates before matriculating to a four-year college or university. There is no limit to the total number of credit hours your student can earn. Upon high school graduation, the student can apply as a Freshman to take advantage of freshman scholarships, or use the college credit hours to apply as a transfer, whichever strategy is more advantageous. Since many colleges use the student’s standing (number of credit hours completed) to schedule registration and sometimes Dorm Room wait lists, the extra credit hours can be a real advantage. In addition, DE credit hours do not count towards the Excess Credit Hours Rule. The State of Texas will only provide funding for 30 credit hours above what the degree plan calls for. For any excessive credit hours, the student pays an out-of-state rate. Obviously, this would not apply to a private college or university, just those in the Texas state system (UNT, A&M, UT, UTA, UTD, etc.). More information can be found here: http://law.onecle.com/texas/education/61.0595.00.html Transferability “Common Core” courses are transferrable to any state-supported university in Texas, including A&M, UNT, and the UT system. Information about a specific college or university can be found here: http://statecore.its.txstate.edu/ About Richland College The Richland College campus is located at 12800 Abrams Road, Dallas, TX 75243, which is about 5 1/2 miles Southeast from The Prometheus Academy. Map: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/directions/ “For 40 years, Richland College of the Dallas County Community College District has focused on teaching, learning and community building. In recognition of these efforts, the White House and the Dept. of Commerce named Richland a 2005 recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the only community college to have received this award. Richland helps students build their future through courses that can be applied to the first two years of a baccalaureate degree, one- or two-year certificates in a number of career fields, and training in the latest technology for students who want to advance in their current careers. The student body of approximately 20,000 college credit students and about 5,000 continuing education students at Richland is internationally and ethnically diverse, speaking more than 79 first languages.” From http://www.richlandcollege.edu/about/ The Prometheus Academy—Dual Credit Program with Richland College (Spring 2015) Page |3 Reference Links Richland College Richland College Dual Enrollment: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/ Richland College DE Process: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/process.php Richland College DE Application Packet: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/2014-2015OnlineApplicationPacket.pdf Campus Map: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/map/ DCCCD (Dallas County Community College District) DCCCD Dual-Enrollment Page: https://www1.dcccd.edu/catalog/admiss/hs_dual.cfm?view=chg) DCCCD Dual-Enrollment Guidelines: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/dual/dualcreditGuidelines.pdf Meningitis Information and Forms DCCCD Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccination Requirements: https://www1.dcccd.edu/catalog/admiss/bacterial.cfm?view=new Vaccination Verification Form (New as of October 2013): Vaccination ONLINE Exemption Form: http://www.richlandcollege.edu/multicultural/forms/Bacterial_meningitus_vac_form.pdf https://corequestjc.dshs.texas.gov/ State of Texas The Texas General Education Core Web Center: http://statecore.its.txstate.edu/ Texas Education Code—Section 61.0595.
