TRAVEL GUIDE THE SUNSET STRIP SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD – ROUTE 66 WEST HOLLYWOOD DESIGN DISTRICT WWW.VISITWESTHOLLYWOOD.COM 1 PROUD TO STAND OUT Its irregularly shaped outline tells of its unique beginnings as a city carved out by those who refused to invisibly fit in. With passion and determination, we’ve built an open yet sophisticated haven that values fresh thinking and individuality. The rebellious and inspired creativity of the people who live and work here has put West Hollywood at the leading edge of culture, entertainment and design. PACIFIC DESIGN CENTER 8687 MELROSE AVENUE SUITE M60 WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA 90069 Officially founded in 1984 as the 84th city in Los Angeles County, West Hollywood is a young, vibrant community with a colorful and entertaining past. From its 19th century beginnings as a virtual “no man’s land,” the region soon became a prime location for a railway, and in 1894, a man named Moses Sherman bought the land and designated it as the headquarters of the Los Angeles Pacific Railway Co. This venture sparked the need for housing, and West Hollywood (then a town called “Sherman”) started to see its first bout of immense growth. SEE US ONLINE: VISITWESTHOLLYWOOD.COM Shortly thereafter, motion picture studios emerged and surpassed the railway as the major FACEBOOK.COM/WESTHOLLYWOOD TWITTER.COM/WESTHOLLYWOOD PINTEREST.COM/WESTHOLLYWOOD INSTAGRAM.COM/VISITWEHO hub of Sherman. Movie moguls Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks bought film studios near Santa Monica Boulevard. In 1925, when the area’s name changed to West Hollywood, a dirt road a few blocks north served as the main commuter route between Beverly Hills and Hollywood. This road is now known as Sunset Boulevard. Sunset became a stomping ground for those in the entertainment world and the Sunset Strip was born, bringing with it nightclubs, hotels and a number of architecturally significant residences. People were drawn to this thriving western locale and celebrities of the Golden Era considered West Hollywood the swankiest, most glamorous nightlife destination. The upscale shopping district Sunset Plaza was born, and nightclubs such as Ciro’s, Mocambo, and the Trocadero were the center of social life for the stars and gangsters like Bugsy Siegel. The area gained notoriety around the nation due in part to the county’s lax law enforcement. At present, the city has grown to 39,000 residents and remains Los Angeles’ hottest destination for the entertainment industry with its boutique hotels, celebrity-owned restaurants, unparalleled nightlife and shopping, and events like the HBO Emmy Party, Sir Elton John’s Annual Oscar Party, the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, LA PRIDE and the largest Halloween street party – the West Hollywood Costume Carnaval – in the world. West Hollywood continues to be an example for progressive, creative individuals on the cutting edge of trends and new ideas, working together as a community in one of the most intriguing cities in the country. Be sure to read all signs and you won’t have any problems. You can also park at one of many garages or public lots ($10-$20/night). Visitors to Sunset Plaza can park in the lots behind the plaza for free, but don’t stray away. Each year The Sunset Strip celebrates its rock history with the Sunset Strip Music Festival. Visit SSMF.com or follow @SSMF on Twitter for dates and more details. Check out what bands are playing The Strip while you’re in town at VisitWestHollywood.com/do/calendar Visit TheSunsetStrip.com for more detailed information. After decades of notoriety, The Sunset Strip continues to blaze its own path as a world-famous cultural landmark, setting trends in music, hotels, dining and shopping. This most famous stretch of Sunset Boulevard begins and ends in West Hollywood, and like the city it calls home, it is constantly breaking new ground and reinventing itself. Though it’s often been portrayed in movies like Sunset Boulevard, Almost Famous and Rock of Ages, visitors say that nothing compares to seeing The Sunset Strip up close and in person. Bordered on the west by Beverly Hills and on the east by Hollywood, this iconic stretch of Sunset Boulevard features an array of world-class hotels, nightclubs, restaurants, shopping and spas. Through the years, The Sunset Strip has seen it all, starting with the seedy glitz of the 1920s, when Prohibition fueled the rise of nightclubs and speakeasies. Because West Hollywood was not yet an incorporated city, this strip of Sunset Boulevard was lightly policed, making The Strip the perfect playground for the rebellious denizens of early Hollywood. By the 1940s, swanky nightclubs like Ciro’s, Trocadero and Mocambo reigned supreme, attracting A-list celebrity clientele like Marilyn Monroe along with less savory characters like gangster Bugsy Siegel, who called The Strip his stomping grounds. In the 1960s, The Sunset Strip became the major gathering place for the counterculture movement in Los Angeles. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison were fixtures of The Strip and the surrounding West Hollywood landscape. The Whisky a Go Go introduced go-go dancers to the U.S. and propelled The Doors – who at the time were the club’s house band – to fame and notoriety. The Strip continued to be a major focal point for the punk rock and New Wave scenes during the late 1970s, and it also became ground zero for the colorful glam metal scene, hosting bands like Mötley Crüe, Guns N’ Roses, and Poison throughout the 1980s. 10 Today, The Sunset Strip continues to launch new artists and attract crowds to legendary music venues like The Roxy Theatre, Whisky a Go Go, House of Blues and The Viper Room. Meanwhile, swank hotel bars such as Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel and Skybar at Mondrian boast some of the most popular and exclusive hideaways on The Strip. The Strip isn’t all nightlife though; daytime visitors will enjoy the high-end shopping and al fresco dining of Sunset Plaza and Sunset Millennium, two of the hottest places to “see and be seen” in Los Angeles. Experience these areas entirely on foot, taking in the fabulous So Cal sunshine, and see why visitors are drawn from around the world to this eclectic destination. Fun Facts: ★★ In 2012 a documentary titled Sunset Strip was released featuring interviews with stars like Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp, Mickey Rourke, Dan Aykroyd, Hugh Hefner, Sharon Stone and many more. Get an insider’s look at The Strip by streaming or downloading the movie from SunsetStripTheMovie.com. ★★The Sunset Tower Hotel was once an apartment building that Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Bugsy Siegel, Frank Sinatra and John Wayne (who kept his cow on his balcony) called home. ★★The Las Vegas Strip was named “The Strip” after The Sunset Strip. ★★The Sunset Strip boasts tall billboards that are second only to those in Times Square in size and cost. 11 SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD Fun Facts: ★ Santa Monica Boulevard’s annual Halloween Carnaval is said to be the largest Halloween street party in the world. HISTORIC ROUTE 66 ★★ Santa Monica Boulevard is referenced in the classic Sheryl Crow song All I Wanna Do (Is Have Some Fun). ★★The Pride Parade on Santa Monica Boulevard is the second-largest event in Los Angeles County, second only to the Rose Parade. West Hollywood has never been known for following trends. It’s known for setting them, and nowhere else is this more apparent than on Santa Monica Boulevard. This eclectic thoroughfare, which was once an industrial strip of road dotted with film studios as well as the Los Angeles Pacific Railway, connects the east side of Los Angeles with the Pacific Ocean, passing through Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Century City, West Los Angeles and ending in Santa Monica. And while this street goes through various personas as you head in either direction, nowhere is Route 66 more diverse, fun and pedestrian-friendly than the 1.9-mile stretch that runs through West Hollywood. Route 66 was America’s main road in the 1950s for travelers heading west, and today, you can still see signage for Route 66. West Hollywood’s portion of “The Boulevard” runs from La Brea Avenue on the east to Doheny Drive on the west. On Santa Monica Boulevard’s eastern side, visitors can check out local favorite bars and restaurants such as Laurel Hardware, The Surly Goat, The Hudson, Salt’s Cure and the James Beard Award-nominated “seafood shack,” Connie and Ted’s. Heading west, you arrive in the heart of West Hollywood and discover unique celebrity-frequented restaurants, eclectic boutiques, coffee shops, gyms and bookstores. Noting the rainbow flags along The Boulevard, this area is where you see firsthand the guiding principle on which West Hollywood was built: the freedom to be yourself and to live life your own way. Santa Monica Boulevard is home to the most popular gay and lesbian scene in Los Angeles, with popular gay nightclubs like The Abbey, Here Lounge, Micky’s, Gym Sports Bar, Fiesta Cantina and Revolver, all of which are bustling on any given evening. From upscale to laid back, anyone fits in when you’re experiencing Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood! 12 ( ) INSIDER TIPS ★★The city installed permanent rainbow crosswalks in 2012. The crosswalks, painted the rainbow colors of the LGBT flag, represent gay pride and LGBT rights and can be viewed on Google Earth. The Pickup Line is a fun and free trolley service that operates on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Look for the brightly colored trolleys, which stop at designated stops along Santa Monica Boulevard between La Peer Avenue and Fairfax Boulevard. Santa Monica Boulevard is pedestrian and pet friendly, with wide sidewalks, many crosswalks, and outdoor cafes. Parking structures on or near Santa Monica Boulevard include the Municipal Parking Structure at the West Hollywood Library, on the corner of San Vicente and Melrose. More information can be found by visiting www.weho. org and clicking on Parking Services. Parking on streets adjacent to The Boulevard is mostly permit-only due to the residential community, so be sure to read the street signs. You can obtain day permit passes from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s station. ★★ Walk Score, a company that maintains a public access walkability index of every place in the United States, Canada and Australia, has named West Hollywood the “Most Walkable City in California.” ★★The beginnings of Hollywood can be traced back to the United Artists movie studio in the 1930s on Formosa Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. This studio was home to sets for the HBO hit True Blood (among others) and is soon to be part of OWN Network. ★★ You never know who you might see reading a movie script or discussing their next role at The Courtyard Brasserie at Palihouse. Located just off of Santa Monica Boulevard on Holloway Drive, Palihouse attracts celebrities such as Zoe Saldana, John Mayer and Robert Pattinson. ★★ Historic club Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard played host to Elton John’s first US concert and continues to house both indie bands and bigger acts like Coldplay and The Cure. ★★ Visit West Hollywood’s gay-specific website at www.gogaywesthollywood.com for more specific gay travel information. 13 ( ) INSIDER TIPS WEST HOLLYWOOD DESIGN DISTRICT The district is best navigated on foot, so find parking on the street and stroll around! This walkable district is an unrivaled international destination for design savvy professionals and sophisticated shoppers alike. Back in the 1950s, the neighborhood held only a handful of shops, studios and cafes catering to the design trade and Ed’s Coffee Shop was the place to meet fellow designers over a toasted ham sandwich and a cup of joe. Later, in the 1960s, businesses like Phyllis Morris Originals became “designers to the stars” and brought more and more style-seekers into the area, slowly transforming it into one of the most distinguished design districts in the country. As more design trade resources opened their doors, the influx of artists, dressmakers, upholsterers, dancers and musicians fleshed out the bohemian spirit of the burgeoning design district. Home to more than 300 of the world’s finest art galleries, furniture designers, fashion boutiques, salons, spas, al fresco cafes and fine restaurants, the West Hollywood Design District is known worldwide for its impeccable selection of luxury products, services and experiences for those seeking the very best. Trends start here, with a unique mix of world-renowned fashion retailers including Christian Louboutin, rag & bone, Balenciaga, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alberta Ferretti, Seize sur Vingt and Stella McCartney, and local favorites including Kitson, Maxfield, Cerre and Curve. The West Hollywood Design District offers both the professional designer and amateur a wealth of highdesign inspiration. Interior design showrooms such as Rose Tarlow Melrose House, Commune, Capellini, Robert Kuo, Minotti, Design Within Reach Studio, Niche and Dennis & Leen emphasize the impact of the 14 district on the design world. Art galleries including M+B Gallery, Wall Street Gallery, Louis Stern Fine Art and Guy Hepner have a significant role in the Los Angeles art scene. When you’re ready for a break, enjoy the organic coffee and peoplewatching at world-famous Entourage locale Urth Caffé, or try the fresh, seasonal food offered at Lemonade. Other great restaurants in West Hollywood Design District to wind down your day include the chic and elegant Cecconi’s, vegan Mexican hot spot Gracias Madre and the intimate and classic Craig’s. Spend a day in the West Hollywood Design District and experience first-hand the quality, style and service that makes this the premier West Coast design district. Fun Facts: ★★ Looking for a caffeine fix? Try Urth Caffé on Melrose, but look out for paparazzi, as it’s frequented by celebrities. Urth Caffé was also known for being a regular hangout spot on the popular LA-based show Entourage. ★★ Hollywood’s leading ladies don’t just shop for themselves here – West Hollywood Design District holds two luxury baby boutiques, Petit Tresor and Bel Bambini, both popular among celebrity moms. ★★ West Hollywood Design District is also host to an exquisite selection of spas and salons including Kinara Spa, Salon Benjamin, Marco Pelusi Hair Studio and Ken Paves Salon, making it the perfect one-stop beauty destination. ★★ Musicians, actors, artists, clothes lovers and collectors all flock to Maxfield on Melrose to find the chic, the unusual and the outstanding. For gay visitors, there’s a lot to love about West Hollywood, including one of the world’s most thriving gay nightlife scenes, sleek designer hotels, and easy access to Los Angeles’ countless cultural and sightseeing landmarks. While there’s something exciting happening here year-round, the LA Pride festival in June and Halloween street party in October both draw hundreds of thousands of revelers, making them great times to visit. If nightlife is your thing, Santa Monica Boulevard is where it’s all happening, with hot spots ranging from pulsing dance clubs to friendly neighborhood bars. The Abbey, Here Lounge, Revolver, Fiesta Cantina, Eleven, Gym Sports Bar, The Factory, Motherlode, Micky’s and Rage are just a few of the bars and clubs that make the west side popular, while Gold Coast, Fubar and Hamburger Mary’s beckon visitors east. In 2014, two highly anticipated new venues – Cooley’s and P.U.M.P Lounge (owned by Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast member Lisa Vanderpump) – will add to the excitement.
