JULIE LONDON Your Number, Please… + At Home
This release presents two complete albums by the amazing Julie London, considered by many to be one of the most sensuous voices
of jazz and popular music. Your Number, Please (Liberty LST7130) compiles twelve songs with which Julie pays tribute to eminent male
vocalists. It contains standards by the great American composers, and arrangements by André Previn, who also conducts the backing
orchestra. Julie at Home (Liberty LST3152), on the other hand, showcases the singer accompanied by a small group which includes such
jazz names as pianist Jimmy Rowles, vibraphonist Emil Richards, and guitarist Al Viola. A truly intimate setting, it was recorded in
Julie’s own living room!

This release contains two outstanding albums by Mel Tormé. The first is the long unavailable 1960 thematic LP Swingin’ on the Moon (Verve MGVS62144). Arranged by Russell Garcia, it compiles a dozen moon-related songs. This is followed by the 1962 album Comin’ Home Baby! (Atlantic SD8069), on
which the singer is backed by a swing group conducted by Shorty Rogers. It features such stars as Rogers himself on flugelhorn, and saxophonists
Bud Shank and Bob Cooper, and includes vocal versions of famous songs composed by jazzmen usually played as instrumentals. While some of this
music has appeared before with inferior sound, this CD presents both albums newly and carefully remastered to offer the best possible sound
quality. In addition, two extra songs which complete the Comin’ Home Baby! sessions but were not included on the original LP.
MEL TORMÉ, vocals on all tracks, plus:
[1-12] Swingin’ on the Moon: Orchestra conducted & arranged by RUSSELL GARCIA. Los Angeles, August 3-5, 1960. Original sessions produced by Russell Garcia.
[13-26] Comin’ Home Baby (14-23) & (25-26) Shorty Rogers & His Orchestra: Shorty Rogers (flhrn, cond, arr), Joe Burnett (tp), Milt Bernhart (tb), John Kitzmiller (tu), Bob Cooper, Bud
Shank (woodwinds), Emil Richards (vib), Mike Wofford (p), Joe Mondragon (b), Larry Bunker (d). Hollywood, July 11, 13 & 16, 1962. (13) & (24) Claus Ogerman (conductor/arranger) & His
Orchestra. New York, September 13, 1962. All original sessions produced by Nesuhi Ertegun.

The first of ten CDs of previously unreleased material recorded privately by Ellington between engagements, all of
which was eventually reissued first on LMR and then Saja/Atlantic. Each of the sets has its interesting moments, offering
previously unknown compositions and performances. Recorded in Chicago during March and December 1956, has plenty of spots for Clark Terry, Ray Nance, Johnny Hodges and
Paul Gonsalves among the orchestra’s many great soloists.

The second of ten CDs of previously unissued recordings of
Duke Ellington, this set differs from the others by being from a
single live session, a dance concert from 1958. The orchestra at
the time boasted such stars as trumpeters Shorty Baker, Clark
Terry and Ray Nance, trombonists Quentin Jackson and Britt
Woodman and a superb saxophone section, although Johnny
Hodges is temporarily absent.

This is the third of ten volumes of previously unknown
Duke Ellington sessions made available in this valuable CD
series. One of the strongest in The Private Collection, these
rarities from 1962 include early versions of several selections
that would later be included in Duke’s Sacred Concerts, two
otherwise unknown but fun Paul Gonsalves originals titled
“Major” and “Minor,” Thelonious Monk’s composition
“Monk’s Dream” (here mistitled “Blue Monk”) and “September 12th Blues” which welcomed trumpeter Cootie Williams back into the band after a 22-year absence.
The fourth of ten CDs released in this valuable series, these
studio sessions from 1963, in addition to rare revivals of “Harmony in Harlem” and “Blue Rose,” are filled with previously
unknown Ellington compositions, a stockpile of fresh material
well worth a full investigation by contemporary musicians.
Throughout all but the four full-band tracks, the focus is on
cornetist Ray Nance, who is the only brass player present on
most of this set. Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Hamilton and Paul
Gonsavles also receive a good sampling of solo space on this
strong entry in The Private Collection program.

One of the most interesting of the ten volumes released in
The Private Collection series, this CD contains “The Degas
Suite” (music for a soundtrack of an art film that was never
produced) and a ballet score titled “The River.” Ellington is
mostly the lead voice but his star sidemen are heard from on
these formerly very rare and somewhat unusual performances. Clearly his genius was strong enough to fill three lifetimes full of new music and this CD contains some melodies
that might have been more significant if he had lived long
enough to find a place for them.

One of ten CDs of previously unreleased (and even unknown) studio and concert performances by Duke Ellington’s
orchestra, these sets allow one to hear Duke experimenting
with his ensemble. Some selections were essentially worksin-progress that would develop within the next few years;
others were quickly discarded originals or rearrangemetns of
older tunes. This seventh volume is split between big-band
sessions from 1957 and 1962 and a get-together from an
octet that included Duke’s former drummer, Sonny Greer, in
the latter year. Ellington fans will want all ten in this valuable series.

The eighth of ten CDs in this valuable series of previously
unknown Duke Ellington recordings is mostly taken from the
1965-67 period (with one selection from 1957) and features
particularly strong moments from trumpeter Cat Anderson,
altoist Johnny Hodges and tenorman Paul Gonsalves on many
little-played Ellington compositions (along with versions of
“Cottontail” and “Moon Mist”). Drummer Louie Bellson

The sixth of ten CDs in this series of previously unknown private recordings is actually related to Vol. 2. Some of these performances are from the same concert at Travis Air Force Base
while the remainder were recorded the next day at Mather
Air Force Base. Although altoist Johnny Hodges and high note
trumpeter Cat Anderson were absent, the music did not suffer
in the slightest, for Ellington still had ten other distinctive soloists. Recordings like this one give one a chance to hear how
Ellington rearranged tunes to make them sound fresh year
after year and sometimes decade after decade.
The ninth of ten volumes of music from Duke Ellington’s Private Collection of unknown tapes, this CD captures him in
1968 shortly after clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton left the band
and tenor-saxophonist Harold Ashby joined up. Even after
30 years of playing some of these standards, Ellington found
new ways to re-arrange such songs as “Sophisticated Lady,”
“Mood Indigo” and “Just Squeeze Me.” In addition, there
are a few new obscurities such as “Knuf” (which finds Jeff
Castleman switching to electric bass), “Reva” and the somewhat dated Trish Turner vocal on “Cool and Groovy.” Lots
of surprises on this fine CD.
The last entry in a ten-volume set of mostly unreleased studio
and live recordings from Duke Ellington’s personal collection,
Private Collection, Vol. 10 primarily consists of a 1965 re-recording of Ellington’s first major extended work, 1943’s “Black,
Brown, and Beige.” Removing a couple of sections from the
original score, Ellington retains all of the tone poem’s vivid,
near-symphonic splendor. The rest of the disc consists of a pair
of 1966 recordings: a 13-minute take on ‘50s, and a section
of 1963’s,

CHET BAKER IN GERMANY 1955-59
- LOST TAPES
REX, WRECKS AND XXX
Two (exceptional) musicians, two backgrounds, two approaches
to music, two generations, an ocean between them: at the end,
only one music, unique, outstanding, made of listening and
respect of each other. The purpose is not to limit themselves to
what they might have in common, but to expand the realm of
possibility by assimilating in the moment what the other can
bring. Even if everything is improvised, studio work of the first
CD, leaving more time for reflection, is the perfect complement
to the second CD, live, giving free rein to spontaneity.
