evening, when Samoana defeated Nu’uuli 30 - 0. The American Samoa High School
Athletic Associations (ASHSAA) went
into week No. 8 of football action this
past weekend, as the reigning champions Tafuna High School continued to
slaughter the Varsity Division with their
unbeatable system — which up to now
remains undefeated.
The Leone Lions are the reigning
champions of the Junior Varsity Division, and they are unquestionably
unbeatable by the other three teams
in the division. They have one more
weekend of action, to officially close off
their divisional competition.

This past week football action started
off with both Warriors and Lions football action which showcased why Tafuna
just might take it again this year, as they
are on the verge of again beating all the
teams in Varsity competition, as the
second round of action continues. The
Lions roared up the best they could offer
against Tafuna in a 50 - 26 blow out win
for the Warriors — again.
Samoana Sharks crushed the Wildcats
in a ‘Mercy Rule’ match that continues to
leave Nu’uuli winless as this year’s season
continues. Rumors around the stadium
are that the Wildcats should just withdraw themselves from any further football
match ups and save themselves from further injuries acquired from their losses. It
would also save them from further heartbreaking defeats, many are saying.
As for the Sharks, they are rebuilding
and boosting their self esteem to try and
make their way back into the play offs
for a possible chance at the title this year.
Samoana beat the Wildcats 30 - 0.
In the Junior Varsity competition
this past Saturday morning, the Vikings
thought they’d bag the undefeated Lions
in the opening half of their match up
for the second time this year — instead,
Fagaitua was just teased into a bitter
taste at the end of the match when

Fisher downplays The 49ers throttle Rams
the drop in Top 25 31-17 for 3rd straight win
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State coach Jimbo
Fisher said his team wasn’t losing the No. 1 spot in the poll
until it lost a game. That was after an overtime victory against
Clemson for the program’s 19th consecutive win.
The Seminoles were dropped to No. 2 on Sunday after winning a school-record 22 straight games. Fisher had a different
perspective at his press conference Monday.
“I don’t even think about it, to be honest with you,” Fisher
said. “We do what we do to win games and the polls will take
care of themselves.”
Mississippi State (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference)
jumped FSU after defeating then-No. 2 Auburn 38-23 on Saturday. Florida State (6-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat
unranked Syracuse 38-20 over the weekend.
FSU had been ranked No. 1 since Dec. 1, 2013.
“They’ve had three top 10 wins. Mississippi State’s got an
excellent football club,” Fisher said. “All those things will wash
themselves out as the season goes on and where you’re at. You
can go up and down.
“We can go win (against) Notre Dame and that puts us back
up there again.”
The Seminoles’ position isn’t unique, but this exact scenario
hasn’t happened since 2009, according to STATS LLC.
USC began 2012 as the No. 1 ranked team, but dropped to
No. 2 behind Alabama after the first weekend.
Oklahoma was the preseason No. 1 in 2011 and fell to No. 2
after starting 3-0, then to No. 3 despite being 4-0.
Florida started 2009 with five consecutive wins and was
the No. 1 team the entire time, but slid to No. 2 behind Alabama despite going 6-0. The Gators regained the top spot the
following week. Both the 2002 Miami and 1995 Florida State
teams were ranked No. 1 through their first six wins and eventually dropped without a loss.
FSU cornerback P.J. Williams said there is motivation to
prove themselves. “Always, every week we look to do that,”
Williams said. “But when we’re playing a bigger team on a
bigger stage, we definitely look to play a lot harder and show
everybody that we are one of the best teams and we can definitely compete on that level.
“I definitely like having doubters.”
The Fighting Irish (6-0) will hit the road as the No. 5 ranked
team as both teams have the opportunity for a highlight win.
The Seminoles don’t have another team on the schedule that is
currently ranked. The Bulldogs still must face No. 7 Alabama
and finish the season with No. 3 Ole Miss.
FSU left tackle Cam Erving agreed that it’s a great opportunity to show how this team can play against a Top 5 team,
but bristled when asked if there was any disappointment from
falling to No. 2. “I don’t really think about it,” Erving said. “I
don’t want to get into all that. Next question.”
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Colin Kaepernick and
the San Francisco 49ers answered St. Louis’
fast start with a big finish.
Kaepernick threw for 343 yards and three
touchdowns, helping the 49ers erase an early
14-point deficit and beat the Rams 31-17 on
Monday night.
“Our guys showed championship character, I
thought,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “I’m really
proud of the way they stepped up.”
Brandon Lloyd, Anquan Boldin and Michael
Crabtree each caught a scoring pass for the 49ers
(4-2), who have won three in a row. Ahmad
Brooks and Dan Skuta had two sacks apiece for
a stifling defense that sacked Austin Davis five
times and permitted one first down on St. Louis’
first six possessions of the second half.
“We’ve had the ball in every game with a
chance to either win or tie,” Davis said. “That’s
where hopefully my experience will help, the
more opportunities I get. You’ve got to be able
to go win games at the end.”
Kaepernick had plenty of time to throw and
wasn’t sacked. “We just want to win,” Kaepernick said. “Whatever it takes, if we’re up with
the lead or if we have to come from behind.”
Kaepernick found Boldin zipping across the
end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass, capping a go-ahead 80-yard drive to start the second
half. As the Niners were taking the 17-14 lead,
several fans in the upper deck unfurled a large
banner above the videoboard on the opposite
end of the stadium as part of ongoing protests
about the Michael Brown shooting in suburban
Ferguson in August.
San Francisco then added to its advantage
when Kaepernick connected with Crabtree for
a 32-yard score with 13 seconds left in the third.
The Rams had one last chance to tie the
game, but Dontae Johnson returned an interception 20 yards for the clinching score with 53
seconds to go. It was a disappointing conclusion for St. Louis, which had 151 yards and a
14-0 lead after the first quarter on Benny Cunningham’s 1-yard run and a 22-yard touchdown
reception for Lance Kendricks.
St. Louis wore throwback uniforms — royal
blue and bright yellow — to honor its 1999
Super Bowl title team and represented that win-
ning squad very well for a short time. Guard
Adam Timmerman joined wide receivers Isaac
Bruce and Torry Holt for an impromptu bob n’
weave TD dance in the end zone at halftime.
The Rams haven’t had a winning season
since the Greatest Show on Turf petered out in
2003. They doubled their first-quarter scoring
for the year with a start that mimicked their last
home game when they led Dallas 21-0.
They lost that one 34-31, and this one was all
San Francisco the rest of the way.
The 49ers scuffled to a 1-2 start coming off a
third straight appearance in the NFC championship game, but have won 13 of their last 14 in
October.
Davis was 21 of 42 for 236 yards. He threw
for 300 yards each of the last two games with
six touchdown passes.
Three of Davis’ four interceptions have
been returned for touchdowns, all in the fourth
quarter at home.
The 49ers had four penalties before the end
of their first possession, three accepted, and one
the rest of the way. One of the early miscues,
illegal contact on Eric Reid, handed the Rams
a second first-and-goal on their opening drive
capped by Cunningham’s TD behind extra
lineman Tim Barnes.
Rookie Tre Mason’s first career carry was
a 24-yarder that might have gone the distance
had he not run into teammate Brian Quick.
Three plays later, Kendricks got well behind
the defense on a 22-yard catch that made it 14-0
late in the first.
The 49ers inched back on Phil Dawson’s
54-yard field goal, his 10th in a row with four
beyond midfield. They were backed up at
their own 5 inside the two-minute warning but
declined to play it safe and Lloyd whipped
Janoris Jenkins in single coverage on an 80-yard
touchdown catch with 14 seconds left in the half.
“We had Brandon Lloyd on a double move,”
Kaepernick said. “We liked the matchup. He
did an amazing job.”
Boldin made two third-down grabs on the
go-ahead scoring drive in the third quarter.
The first was a 15-yarder on third-and-12 to
the 20, and he also improvised for an 11-yard
grab on third-and-1.
Wong homers in
9th, Cards edge
Giants to tie NLCS
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kolten Wong ended Game 2 of the NL
Championship Series with a big swing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Now, they can only hope the season isn’t over for Yadier
Molina.
Wong hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning
and the resilient Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4
Sunday night, tying the best-of-seven series at one game apiece
with their latest postseason power show.
The Cardinals came back after losing Molina to a strained
oblique muscle in the sixth. The All-Star catcher was getting
further tests and manager Mike Matheny said it “didn’t look
real good.”
“We’ll wait and see and right now we’ll just go ahead and
keep celebrating a very tough, hard-fought win. I am real proud
at how these guys kept coming,” Matheny said.
St. Louis didn’t stay down too long, getting a home run each
of the final three innings in a back-and-forth game.
The series resumes Tuesday night in San Francisco with
John Lackey going for St. Louis and Tim Hudson starting for
the Giants.
“It was tough to see our backstop go down like that,” Matt
Adams said. “We just kept grinding it the rest of the game.”
Rookie pinch-hitter Oscar Taveras connected in the seventh
to tie it, and Adams homered in the eighth for a 4-3 lead. San
Francisco tied it in the ninth on a wild pitch by closer Trevor
Rosenthal.
St. Louis, last in the NL with 105 home runs during the regular season, has hit 11 homers in six playoff games — seven in
the seventh inning or later. Earlier, Matt Carpenter connected
for the fourth time this postseason.
“It kind of got overshadowed there at the end, but man that
was an exciting game,” Carpenter said. “That was a must-win
for us, to do that in that fashion especially after giving up the
lead in the ninth.”
After the Giants tied it, Wong lined a pitch from Sergio
Romo for his second big home run this postseason. The rookie’s
seventh-inning drive was the decisive blow in Game 3 of the NL
Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It was a rare postseason failure for the reliable San Francisco
bullpen.
“They are the reason we’re in this situation, and you give (the
Cardinals) credit,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “They threw out
some good at-bats and we made a couple of mistakes and they
took advantage of them.”
The Giants made it 4-all when pinch-runner Matt Duffy
dashed home from second base on a two-out wild pitch in the
ninth. San Francisco wound up losing for just the second time in
its last 14 postseason games.
“It’s not a tough loss at all. I feel it was a great loss,” said
Gregor Blanco, who had a tiebreaking hit in the seventh. “We
battled to the last out, so I think it was a great win.”
Seth Maness retired Pablo Sandoval on a comebacker with
the bases loaded to end the top of the ninth, and got the win.
Maness came on after Rosenthal couldn’t hold a one-run
lead. Rosenthal’s pitch bounced off the glove off backup catcher
Tony Cruz and Duffy, running on a full count, never broke stride
and slid home with the tying run.
Adams, whose three-run shot off Clayton Kershaw put St.
Louis in front for good in its clinching playoff win over Dodgers,
homered off Hunter Strickland.
Blanco’s fourth postseason hit in 31 at-bats put the Giants up
3-2 in the seventh, but Taveras re-tied it in the bottom half with
a homer off Jean Machi just inside the right-field foul pole.
Carpenter hit a solo shot off Jake Peavy in the third. Randal
Grichuk singled with the bases loaded in the fourth to make
it 2-0.
Peavy was taken out for a pinch hitter in the fifth and the
Giants scored a run off Lance Lynn, then Hunter Pence’s single
tied it in the sixth.
UP NEXT
Giants: Hudson pitched well vs. Washington in Game 2 of
the Division Series, allowing a run in 7 1-3 innings.
Cardinals: Lackey has a win in each of his last three postseason series and is the active leader with 111 postseason
innings.

Molina became St. Louis’ career leader in postseason hits
with 89, moving past Albert Pujols on a single in the second.

The Bulls won the game 110-90. Peyton closing in on Brett
Favre’s “TD passes” mark
by BARRY WILNER, AP Pro Football Writer
Peyton Manning shrugged off the question about the meaningfulness of inevitably
breaking Brett Favre’s NFL record for touchdown passes. Deep down, though, the only man
to win five MVP awards must recognize what
an achievement it is.
Next Sunday against San Francisco, or perhaps the following Thursday against San Diego,
Manning will surpass Favre’s 508 regularseason TD throws. Manning is two shy after
throwing for three scores in a 31-17 victory
over the New York Jets on Sunday.
“I don’t know if any of them are big for
me, necessarily, especially in the middle of the
season,” Manning said. “We’re trying to win
football games. It’s tough. It’s a tough schedule.
That’s all I’m thinking about, trying to find a
way to win the game.
“If Ronnie (Hillman) wants to run for four
touchdowns next week, I’m in favor of that.”
It’s not that Manning doesn’t care about
owning these records — and when he is through
in the NFL, he might own all of the passing
marks. He certainly covets all of those Associated Press Most Valuable Player honors, possessing two more than Favre, the next most frequent winner.
And when he threw for an almost unimaginable 55 touchdowns last season, the massiveness of the accomplishment wasn’t lost on him.
This upcoming record puts him in the category of Barry Bonds — or if you prefer, given
the way Bonds’ career accomplishments are
muddled, Hank Aaron.
“I think it is a measure of ultimately how
productive he is,” said Bill Polian, the man who
drafted Manning back in 1998 in Indianapolis
and watched him develop into perhaps the
greatest of all passers.
“That is the sort of No. 1 task of a quarterback, especially in this day and age, so it is
very meaningful. It’s a little like the home run
record.”
Manning has been hitting ‘em out of the park
— well, throwing them into the end zone —
with incredible regularity since missing 2011
because of several neck surgeries. His work in
Denver has been even more impressive given
how questionable any comeback was when the
Broncos signed him after Indianapolis released
him in early 2012.
Two of his three highest passer ratings have
come as a Bronco; only in his original recordsetting season of 2004 did he rate higher with
the Colts.
Manning averaged 46 TD passes in his first
two Denver seasons; he averaged just under
24 in Indy. Two of his three highest completion percentages have come as a Bronco; same
things for yards passing.
Polian doesn’t see too many adjustments that
Manning has been forced to make in Denver.
“He looks to me very much like the quarterback I knew,” said Polian, now an analyst for
SiriusXM NFL Radio and for ESPN. “The arm
isn’t what it was, but it happens to every quarterback. I don’t think there’s much difference
from Peyton in Indianapolis before the injury;
his timing still is exquisite.”
It sure is: Denver hosts San Francisco on
Sunday night, so Manning can grab the record
in prime time. The NFL and NBC have to love
that for the ratings it will bring.
Football fans haven’t lost any desire to
watch this 38-year-old quarterback. Favre is the
standard for longevity — sure, George Blanda
played until he was 48, but the last nine seasons were mostly as a kicker; Vinny Testaverde
lasted until he was 44, but in a journeyman sort
of way. Manning remains at the top of his game,
performing at a level few reach in any sport.
To Polian, what Manning, Tom Brady and
Drew Brees still can do is entertaining, educational, and rare. “They have seen everything
that anyone can throw at them,” Polian said.
There’s no new wrinkle a defensive coordinator can throw at them, even including terrifically creative guys like Rex Ryan. You are not
going to fool them. Peyton and those guys can
go back into their memory bank and see where
they faced it, and they do just that.
“All of them are exceptionally intelligent and
diligent. That long experience gives them an
advantage in that it is impossible to fool them.
“One other thing all great quarterbacks have
to a greater degree than most — and Peyton
may be the best of all — they can manipulate
defenses. Only the great ones can. With their
eyes, their motions, looking people off, going
through progressions, they are trying to make
the defense react in a certain away. And they
do very frequently. That is a huge advantage for
those guys.”

Hawaii running back Joey Iosefa
arrested on suspicion of DUI
HONOLULU (AP) — University of Hawaii running back
Joey Iosefa has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
According to police records, 23-year-old Iosefa was taken
into custody at about 5 a.m. Sunday near downtown Honolulu.
He was released after posting $500 bail.
University Athletic Director Ben Jay says he plans to meet
with football head coach Norm Chow on Tuesday to determine
how to handle the situation.
Jay says the university is gathering facts about the incident to
determine how to proceed in the best interest of “Joey, the team
and University of Hawaii.”
The arrest comes after the Rainbow Warriors beat Wyoming
38-28 on Saturday after a two-game losing streak.
Iosefa couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. A court
date is scheduled for Nov. 10.
Germany’s Kienle wins Hawaii’s
Ironman World Championship
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — Germany’s Sebastian
Kienle won the Ironman World Championship for the first time
Saturday, beating American Ben Hoffman by more than five
minutes. The 30-year-old German completed the 2.4-mile ocean
swim, 112-mile bike leg and marathon run in 8 hours, 14 minutes, 18 seconds. He was 38th after the swim and took the lead
for good 95 miles into the bike leg.
Kienle finished the swim in 54:38, the bike ride in 4:20.46
and the run in 2:54.36.
“I never thought I was going to win this,” said Kienle, the
Ironman 70.3 winner in 2012 and 2013. “Never judge a life on
one bad day. Judge it on for the best day.”
Hoffman finished in 8:19:23. Germany’s Jan Frodeno was
third in 8:20:32.
Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae won the women race for the third
time, finishing in 9:00.55. Also, the champion in 2010 and 2013,
she failed to break the course record of 8:52.14 she set last year.
Referee clubhouse in
Cyprus struck by pipe bomb
NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — A referees’ clubhouse in Cyprus
was struck by a pipe bomb in a pre-dawn attack, causing minor
damage. Police said the low-yield explosive was placed at the
entrance of Cyprus Referee Association’s clubhouse early
Monday. FIFA President Sepp Blatter condemned the attack
as “cowardly” and offered full support to the Cyprus Football
Association’s efforts to protect match officials.
Referee association chairman Michalis Argyrou urged police
to take action to stop this “repeated pattern of behavior.”
Cypriot referees are sometimes the target of abuse and intimidation. Argyrou says a firebomb was tossed at a referee’s home
in Limassol two weeks ago. In February, the Cypriot federation postponed all first division matches for a weekend after a
bombing damaged the car of a top referee.
Ferguson protest banner
hung briefly at Rams game
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The ongoing protests over the death of
Michael Brown made a quick appearance at the Edward Jones
Dome during the second half of the St. Louis Rams’ game
Monday night. Protesters briefly hung a banner reading, “Rams
fans know on and off the field black lives matter,” over of the top
of a jumbo video board in the north end zone during the 49ers’
go-ahead drive in the third quarter.
A few minutes later, about three-dozen protesters marched
with their hands raised in an aisle just below the upper deck in
the south end zone. Five police officers followed them.
The protests stem from the August shooting death of Brown,
who was black and unarmed, by white Ferguson police officer
Darren Wilson.
Police seize drugs, cash
from Bama player’s room
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Authorities seized marijuana
and more than $4,000 in cash from an Alabama football player’s
dorm room. Court papers filed online Monday say agents with
the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force found 112 grams of
marijuana and the money Oct. 7 in the room of reserve tight end
Kurt Freitag.
The filings indicate agents witnessed and recorded a drug
transaction involving Freitag, who had been identified by a confidential informant. Tuscaloosa County District Attorney Lyn
Head filed a request to have the $4,661 forfeited to the state.
The court documents don’t indicate if any charges have been
filed against Freitag.
Tuscaloosa Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Blankley declined
to comment because it’s an ongoing investigation.
Freitag, a sophomore from Buford, Georgia, has not played
this season. A university spokeswoman declined to comment.

Hoyer wants to get LeBron
on the Browns’ bandwagon
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — LeBron James could be getting some
pressure to change his NFL colors.
A die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, James is feeling really good
about his team’s 5-1 record. The Cavaliers’ superstar posted a
photo on his Instagram account Monday of him beaming a wide
smile while wearing a Cowboys sweatshirt and cap.
Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer said he understands James’
loyalties. “He’s a year older than me, the Browns left when he
was a kid, too,” said Hoyer, referring to the Browns’ move to
Baltimore in 1995. “You have to cheer for someone.”
Hoyer has the Browns off to a 3-2 start, and the local native
thinks it might be good enough to convince King James to consider pulling for the brown and orange. “Hopefully,” Hoyer said
with a smile, “we can bring him around to it.”
James attended a Browns practice this summer with his sons.
Houston Astros improvement
costs furniture mogul
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros’ improvement this
year from baseball’s worst team cost a Houston furniture mogul
Jim McIngvale more than $4 million to make good on a promise
to fans. The man known in Houston as “Mattress Mack” last
spring offered to reimburse the first 500 customers who spent
more than $6,300 on furniture at his stores if the Astros won
63 games — matching the age McIngvale turned this year. The
Astros won 70 games.
Sunday was payoff day and some 420 customers picked up
their money at a party at McIngvale’s store.
“I could have put it at 70, which would have made it much
more difficult, but I wanted to give the customers a better chance
to win, and that’s the way it turned out,” McIngvale said. “The
customers are happy, we’re happy.”
Two lines of happy customers stretched the length of the store
to collect their winnings, munching on free food and chatting
with and getting autographs from former Astros players Larry
Dierker and Jose Cruz, plus Reid Ryan, the club’s president.
Wednesday hearing set on
removing Peterson judge
CONROE, Texas (AP) — A hearing has been scheduled for
Wednesday on whether to remove the judge presiding over the
felony child abuse case against Adrian Peterson.
Assistant Montgomery County District Attorney Phil Grant
tells the Houston Chronicle that prosecutors plant to argue for
replacing state District Judge Kelly Case as presiding judge in
the Peterson case. That’s after Case was said to have referred to
attorneys in the case as “media whores.”
However, Grant said Peterson’s lead attorney, Rusty Hardin,
is scheduled to be out of town Wednesday and the hearing may
be rescheduled. Case apologized at Peterson’s first court appearance Wednesday, saying the comment was meant as a joke.
Peterson is charged with felony injury to a child for using a
wooden switch on his 4-year-old son.
Former boxing champion
Leon Spinks hospitalized
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former heavyweight champion Leon
Spinks is in a Las Vegas hospital after a second operation for
abdominal problems. The 61-year-old boxer, who catapulted to
fame by beating Muhammad Ali in 1978, had the second surgery in recent days after complications from the first emergency
surgery, his wife said.
“It’s going to be a long road ahead, but he’s strong and he’s
starting to recover,” Brenda Spinks told The Associated Press.
Brenda Spinks said she doesn’t know how long her husband
will be hospitalized, but that she’s optimistic about his recovery.
“There were complications after his first surgery, but everything has been fixed,” she said.
Earlier, singer Tony Orlando sent out a tweet asking people to
pray for Spinks, a good friend of his. Orlando wrote that Spinks
was “facing the greatest fight of his life.”
Spinks and younger brother Michael both won Olympic
gold medals in 1976 in different weight classes and went on to
become heavyweight champions. Leon’s rise was meteoric —
he got a shot at Ali and the heavyweight title on Feb. 15, 1978,
after just seven pro fights.
Few in boxing — including Ali — gave Spinks any chance in
the fight, but he used his energy and awkward style to frustrate
Ali and win a 15-round split decision at the Las Vegas Hilton.
But he lost the title back to Ali in their rematch seven months
later before more than 60,000 people at the Superdome in New
Orleans. Spinks would get one more chance at the title in 1981
against Larry Holmes, only to be stopped in the third round.
He would never become the heavyweight champion again but
fought until 1995, finishing with a career mark of 26-17-3.
Spinks, who has slurred his words since his active boxing days,
was diagnosed in 2012 with shrinkage in his brain, which doctors
said was likely caused by the punches he took during his career.
Michael Spinks upset Holmes for the heavyweight title in 1985
and fought Mike Tyson in a title showdown three years later.
Tyson knocked him out 91 seconds into the fight, and he retired.

Solaita Field with a scheduled starting time of 5:00 p.m. Seattle banged up
after loss to Dallas
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — There were going
to be plenty of questions about where the Seattle
Seahawks are headed on offense after Sunday’s
30-23 loss to Dallas.
Marshawn Lynch touched the ball only 10
times. Russell Wilson threw for 66 yards after the
first quarter and Percy Harvin finished with zero
yards receiving despite making three catches.
The bigger concern could be the list of
injuries the Super Bowl champs are suddenly
dealing with now.
Cornerback Byron Maxwell, middle linebacker Bobby Wagner and center Max Unger
are all in question for Sunday’s game at St.
Louis with a variety of injuries.
Maxwell was originally thought to have a
high ankle sprain after going down in the second
quarter on Sunday, but was diagnosed Monday
with a calf strain that should get him back on
the field sooner than first expected.
Unger has a strained foot that kept him inactive on Sunday and his status against the Rams
likely won’t be decided till the end of the week.
The severity of Wagner’s turf toe injury has
not been determined, but could be the most
significant. Wagner was injured early in the
second quarter on Sunday, but returned in the
second half.
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Wagner
is “banged up,” and didn’t rule out that the
injury could be similar to the one suffered by
left tackle Russell Okung last season in Week
2 that required surgery and a stint on injured
reserve. Okung returned later in the season.
“(It) could be. We’ll have to wait and see,”
Carroll said. “We’ll have to assess that and
figure it out.”
Wagner was having a stellar start to his third
season. He had double-digit tackles in Seattle’s
first three games and collected the only sack
in the Seahawks’ win over Washington last
Monday night.
Undrafted rookie Brock Coyle filled in when
Wagner was out on Sunday. Seattle has used
K.J. Wright at middle linebacker in the past
when Wagner was sidelined, but Carroll would
not commit one way or the other.
“We’ll have to wait and see on that one,”
Carroll said.
Along with that injured trio, tight end Zach
Miller is not expected to be back this week after
having ankle surgery during the bye week.
KCPQ-TV in Seattle reported Monday that
Okung has been playing with a torn labrum in
his shoulder suffered in Week 3 against Denver.
Carroll didn’t confirm the report, but said
Okung suffered a shoulder sprain and should
be able to continue playing without issue.
About the only good news Seattle received
among its injured players is the expectation that
cornerback Tharold Simon will have a chance
to play against the Rams and that safety Kam
Chancellor made it through Sunday’s game
without problems despite a strained hip.
Seattle was able to avoid major injury issues
last season and when it did there was enough
depth to plug the gaps until the starters returned.
That depth was thinned through free agency
and roster decisions in the offseason and is now
being tested.
The injury problems muted the concerns
about Seattle’s game plan against Dallas. Lynch
seemed an afterthought as was most of Seattle’s
run game.
Lynch didn’t have a carry between the end
of the first quarter and Seattle’s first offensive
play of the second half, a span of 21 minutes, 59
seconds of game time.
The Seahawks led the league in rushing
entering Sunday, but the 18 total rushing
attempts was the second time in five games
Seattle failed to get 20 carries.
The Seahawks seemed more concerned with
trying to get the ball to Harvin — who had six
total touches for (minus)-1 yard — than relying
on Lynch.
Carroll took responsibility for the lackluster
effort, that included problems getting off the
field defensively on third downs, saying he
didn’t do a good enough job in preparation after
the Monday night win over Washington.
“I think we’re still working at it. Sometimes
it takes quite a while before you find it and
we’re not quite there yet because we haven’t
found the consistency,” Carroll said.
“We know what we’re trying to do. We
know where it is and what it needs to be but
we’re just not quite there yet.
Broncos say Trevathan
has another broken leg
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Danny Trevathan is grappling with a setback in his comeback. The Denver Broncos’
top tackler from last season reinjured his left leg Sunday in his
second game back from a broken bone under his kneecap. He
learned Monday he’ll miss several more weeks with another
crack on the top and side of the same kneecap.
Coach John Fox said this latest injury is “nothing even
remotely the same as his last injury.”
However, the timeline for his return might be similar. Although
Fox declined to say how long he expected Trevathan to be out,
his teammates mentioned six weeks when talking about the linebacker’s latest injury. Trevathan returned in the sixth week after
his first knee injury, which occurred on Aug. 12. Trevathan was
able to put weight on his left leg Monday. He walked haltingly
through the locker room while holding — but not using — the
same crutches he thought he’d ditched for good last month.
Chicago Marathon runner remains in
critical condition after collapsing
CHICAGO (AP) — A 59-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday night after collapsing in the Chicago Marathon and
receiving CPR. The man was stricken late in the race and taken
to Mercy Hospital on Chicago’s near South Side, where a hospital spokesman said he remained in critical condition.
Race medical director Dr. George Chiampas said earlier in
the day that the man was one of two runners who needed CPR.
The other was a 29-year-old man who had to be shocked after
being stricken around the seventh mile was stable and talking
to staff at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on Chicago’s North Side. Chiampas said another runner — possibly
a doctor — had already started CPR by the time medical personnel arrived. Chiampas said over 800 runners needed medical
care and 24 were taken to hospitals.
Prosthetic leg reported
stolen near stadium found
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police say a prosthetic leg reported
stolen from a veteran in a wheelchair outside the Eagles-Giants
football game in south Philadelphia was later recovered on a
subway train. Sonny Forriest Jr., who is known for singing for
fans outside Phillies and Eagles games, told police that he had
taken off his prosthetic leg during his performance. He said he
was packing up to leave when a woman in her 20s wearing Eagles
gear who appeared intoxicated approached and took the leg.
Police said a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation
Authority conductor found the leg at about 1 a.m. Monday at the
Olney station in north Philadelphia.
Investigators said they planned to examine transit station surveillance video to try to identify a suspect. They said it appeared
that three women took part in the theft.
Norway’s Odegaard sets
Euro qualifier age record
OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norway’s 15-year-old midfielder
Martin Odegaard became the youngest player to appear in a
European Championship qualifier when he came on as a secondhalf substitute in a 2-1 win over Bulgaria on Monday.
Odegaard replaced Mats Moller Daehli in the 64th minute to
a huge ovation from the home crowd, setting a new age record at
15 years and 300 days. He broke a 31-year-old mark held by Iceland’s Sigurdur Jonsson, who was 16 years and 251 days when
he made his qualifying debut against Malta in 1983.
Odegaard told Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang after the
game that “it was special.” He said “I think it went great today
and we got the three points, that’s the most important.”
Thunder prepare to play
without MVP Kevin Durant
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — For the first time, the Oklahoma City Thunder will be forced to play without Kevin Durant
for more than a handful of games.
The team announced Sunday that the league’s reigning MVP
would be out for an undetermined length of time with a fracture
in his right foot, at the base of the small toe. Typically, the injury
requires surgery and six to eight weeks of healing. The Thunder
haven’t officially determined what’s next, although general
manager Sam Presti said surgery would be likely.
The Thunder will play without Durant on Tuesday night in a
preseason game against Memphis. “No one’s feeling sorry for
us,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “I can honestly
say I did not receive any text messages from coaches around the
league looking to postpone the season.”
Opponents have seen more than enough of Durant. Since he
entered the league in 2007, he leads the league in points and
minutes played. He has missed just 16 regular season games
in his seven-year career and has never missed more than eight
games in a season.
His longest absence was a seven-game stretch during the
2008-09 season because of a sprained right ankle. He missed
one game last season, one game the season before, played in all
82 games during the 2009-10 season and all 66 games during the
lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.

Marquez second in Japan to
claim MotoGP championship
MOTEGI, Japan (AP) — Honda rider Marc Marquez of Spain
defended his MotoGP championship on Sunday when he finished second in the Grand Prix of Japan behind compatriot Jorge
Lorenzo. Marquez crossed the line 1.638 seconds behind Lorenzo
to collect the crucial points for the world championship win.
Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi of Italy completed the podium in
third place. Yamaha rider Lorenzo took his second successive victory with a time of 42 minutes, 21.259 seconds over 24 laps at the
4.801-kilometer (2.983 mile) Honda-owned Motegi circuit.
With three races left in the season, Marquez has 312 points,
82 points ahead of Rossi and Dani Pedrosa. Riders are awarded
25 points for a win. Having started fourth on the grid, Marquez
passed Rossi midway through the race then made an attempt to
catch Lorenzo, but the Yamaha rider held his lead and Marquez
settled for second. At 21, Marquez is the youngest rider to take
consecutive premier world titles.
SEC — the Alabama-Arkansas
referee mistakenly ran clock
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference says the referee in the Alabama-Arkansas game mistakenly
kept the clock running after a penalty near the end of the game,
allowing the Crimson Tide to end the game without running a
final play. Spokesman Chuck Dunlap says referee Penn Wagers
signaled for the clock to start with 1:01 remaining in Alabama’s
14-13 win, after guard Arie Kouandjio had been called for a
false-start penalty on third-and-2. However, the clock should
have started on the snap. The Razorbacks stopped the Crimson
Tide on third-and-7, but the clock runoff allowed Alabama to
end the game without running a play on fourth down.
Police detain 30 fans at
Romania-Hungary qualifier
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Police say 30 Romanians
were detained at the 2016 European Championship qualifier
between Romania and Hungary after supporters lobbed firecrackers and smoke bombs before the match. Police used tear gas
and evacuated fans ahead of Saturday’s match, which ended 1-1.
Firecrackers and shouting drowned out the Hungarian
national anthem before the match. Afterward, Hungarian fans
received a police escort out of the capital to buses and trains.
Police spokeswoman said Irina Dragan said 30 Romanian
supporters were detained and five were banned from football
stadiums for a year. Medical authorities said Sunday some
people suffered fractures and minor head injuries.
Interior ministry official Gabriel Oprea said 12,000 police
and riot police were deployed, with an estimated 800 fans traveling from Hungary to the Romanian capital.
Shelly says he talked business with Snyder
PHOENIX (AP) — Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly says
he talked business with Redskins owner Dan Snyder at Sunday’s
game and not about the debate over the team’s name and logo.
Shelly said Monday that he and Snyder spoke about expanding
an agreement the tribe made with the team earlier this year.
The Redskins entered into a licensing agreement with Navajo
Arts and Crafts Enterprise for the sale of tribal jewelry, rugs,
sand paintings and other items at FedEx Field in Landover,
Maryland. Washington waived the licensing fee for the tribe and
is working to open the agreement to the other 31 NFL teams.
Shelly talked to Snyder about other possible initiatives,
including construction of an indoor sports pavilion on the reservation and funding for the Navajo Code Talkers Museum.
Louisville dismisses freshman wideout
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville has dismissed
freshman wide receiver Cameron Polk from the team after
campus police cited him for drug possession.
Polk received a citation for trafficking a controlled substance
within 1,000 feet of school following the Oct. 7 incident. The
campus police report states that campus police entered his apartment and found marijuana, hydrocodone pills and codeine syrup.
Cardinals coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement confirming
Polk’s release “that it is important that we provide him with the
help and support needed to help him with his problems.”
The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Fishers, Indiana, native enrolled in
January but missed part of spring practice with injuries. He is
listed as having played this season but has no recorded statistics.
Williams returning to US bobsled team
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Lauryn Williams isn’t done
with bobsledding after all. Williams, one of five people to medal
in different sports at the Summer and Winter Olympics, was
announced Monday as a returning push athlete by the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation.
Williams considered retirement after the Sochi Olympics,
which capped her first bobsled season. The USBSF is holding
its push championships Thursday and Friday and Williams
is expected to compete. Push championships are the official
opening to the annual selection process for the national team.
Williams, a former University of Miami track star, teamed
with Elana Meyers Taylor to win bobsled silver at the Sochi
Games. She’s also won gold and silver medals as a sprinter at
the Summer Olympics.

an NFL football game Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, in St Louis. Cowboys, Eagles stake
claims as ‘NFC powers’
NFL ROUNDUP
(AP) — If you’re looking for NFC powerhouses, try the Cowboys and Eagles.
Dallas and Philadelphia each improved to
5-1 on Sunday with impressive performances.
The Cowboys went into Seattle and edged the
defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks
30-23. A few hours later, Philadelphia routed
the New York Giants 27-0.
DeMarco Murray again rushed for more than
100 yards and scored on a 15-yard run with 3:16
left as the Cowboys stunned Seattle 30-23.
Dallas, 5-1 for the first time since 2007,
overcame a pair of special teams turnovers to
become the first team outside the NFC West to
win in Seattle since 2011.
“I think that showed the maturity of this
team. We expected to win,” Dallas tight end
Jason Witten said. “We knew this was going to
be a challenge and we stayed the course.”
The course couldn’t have been rougher for
the Giants at Philadelphia. Connor Barwin had
three of the Eagles’ eight sacks. “Bill Davis,
our defensive coordinator, called a great game,
moved us around up front, their O-Line couldn’t
get a read on what we were doing,” Barwin said.
The Week 6 action began Thursday night
when Indianapolis improved to 4-2 by beating
Houston (3-3) 33-28. Off this week were Kansas
City (2-3) and New Orleans (2-3).
COWBOYS 30, SEAHAWKS 23
Murray’s touchdown run capped a 75-yard
drive that saw Tony Romo convert a third-and-20
with a pass to Terrance Williams along the sideline. Murray had 115 yards on 29 carries to join
Jim Brown as the only running backs in NFL
history to open a season with six straight 100yard games. Murray also had six receptions for
31 yards. Tony Romo was 21 of 32 for 250 yards
and two touchdowns without an interception.
Russell Wilson had a 9-yard touchdown run,
and Mike Morgan returned a blocked punt 25
yards for a score for Seattle (3-2).
EAGLES 27, GIANTS 0
Wearing all-black uniforms for the first time
in franchise history, the Eagles shut out an opponent for the first time since a 24-0 win over the
Giants on Dec. 1, 1996, at old Veterans Stadium.
Nick Foles threw two touchdown passes and
LeSean McCoy had a season-high 149 yards
rushing. “There’s been so much talk about this
and that ... we were confident and we played our
game,” McCoy said. “We’re 5-1.”
A rough night for the Giants (3-3) became
worse when wide receiver Victor Cruz tore the
patellar tendon his right knee while leaping for
a pass on fourth down from the Eagles 3 in the
third quarter. Cruz, a 2012 Pro Bowl pick, was
crying and holding his hands to his face as he
was carted off the field with an injury that’s
expected to end his season.
RAVENS 48, BUCCANEERS 17
At Tampa, Joe Flacco threw for four touchdowns in the first quarter and five altogether
— all in the first half. Baltimore (4-2) scored
on six straight possessions to begin the game,
with Flacco throwing touchdown passes on the
first five. Torrey Smith caught the first two, and
Kamar Aiken, Michael Campanaro and Steve
Smith had the others as the Ravens rebounded
from a road loss to Indianapolis. “It was very
enjoyable. You don’t get those too often in this
league. ... It was pretty crazy,” Flacco said. “It
happened so quickly. It was such an awkward
situation, but it was definitely fun for us.”
Not for the Buccaneers (1-5), who were
embarrassed for the second time in six games
under first-year coach Lovie Smith. The Bucs
fell 56-14 at Atlanta on Sept. 18.
BRONCOS 31, JETS 17
During a much more successful trip to the
Meadowlands than in February, the Broncos (4-1)
did their best work running the ball and stopping
the Jets’ ground game. Yes, Peyton Manning connected with Julius Thomas twice and Demaryius
Thomas once, leaving the Denver quarterback two
shy of Brett Favre’s record for career touchdown
passes. But Ronnie Hillman ran for 100 yards and
Denver allowed only 31 yards rushing.
Manning has 506 touchdown passes, and
could tie or break Favre’s record next Sunday at
home against San Francisco. Demaryius Thomas
had 10 catches for 124 yards for Denver, whose
last game at MetLife Stadium was a 43-8 loss to
Seattle in the Super Bowl.
The Jets (1-5) have lost five in a row.
PATRIOTS 37, BILLS 22
Even with new owners, the Bills can’t handle
the Patriots. Tom Brady threw four touchdown
passes and had his 60th 300-yard game to improve
to 23-2 against the Bills (3-3). Brandon LaFell had
two touchdown catches, including a 56-yarder,
and the Patriots (4-2) forced three turnovers.
Brady finished 27 of 37 for 361 yards to spoil
the Bills’ first game under new owners Terry
and Kim Pegula and before a loud crowd at
Ralph Wilson Stadium.
“I’m not sure really, historically,” Brady
said. “It’s good to be on the winning end.”

(AP Photo/David Richard)
of an NFL football game Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, in Cleveland. Steelers say they
have the talent
for a turnaround
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t do
much in a blowout loss to Cleveland on Sunday.
But players say they believe they have the talent to turn
things around if they execute better and with more consistency.
“We’ve just got to be consistent,” cornerback Ike Taylor
said Monday. “Really, that’s what it is. We have been too
inconsistent, and when you’re inconsistent you play good
halves and good quarters. But you’re up and down, and that’s
what you don’t want to be in the NFL. When we get our consistency back, we’ll start stacking wins.”
That’s something the Steelers haven’t done too often lately.
The Steelers (3-3) have missed the playoffs the past two
years, going 8-8 both years.
This season, they’ve alternated wins and losses.
The Steelers followed a season-opening win against the
Browns with a loss at Baltimore, then bounced back with a
win at Carolina.
Another bad loss followed against Tampa Bay, but a win
against Jacksonville gave them hope. That diminished with
Sunday’s loss at Cleveland.
Splash plays, as coach Mike Tomlin likes to call them, are
missing on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, the Steelers can’t get off the field on third
down, allowing better than a 35 percent conversion rate.
Offensively, their play in the red zone is lacking as they are
31st in scoring touchdowns.
And penalties hamper all three phases.
“Obviously, we’ve struggled with that,” wideout Lance
Moore said. “And we’ve settled for a lot more field goals than
we’ve wanted to. ... I think we’re a team that’s pretty good
running and throwing, so I’m not sure that it’s play selection.
As players, all we can do is execute what is called.”
Tight end Heath Miller agreed that no matter what plays
are called, the Steelers must execute them better and changing
what plays are called in the red zone shouldn’t be a concern
of the players. “We’re searching for answers about ways to
execute better down there, and we’ll be looking at it again this
week,” Miller said.
“(And) all we can do is try to execute the plays that we’re
given the best that we can. And that should be the focus in this
locker room, to execute better what we’re asked to do.”
So does this Steelers team have what it takes to turn things
around? “The talent is there,” outside linebacker Jason Worilds
said. “That’s not the question. It’s more about everybody being
accountable and being consistent. I think, for one reason or
another, we’ll have a lapse. And those lapses can get you beat.”
➧ NFL SUNDAY ROUNDUP…
CARDINALS 30, REDSKINS 20
Carson Palmer returned from a five-week
absence to throw two touchdown passes, and
host Arizona took the NFC West lead.
Larry Fitzgerald caught six passes for a
season-high 98 yards and his first touchdown
of the season to help the Cardinals (4-1) bounce
back from a 41-20 drubbing at Denver.
Kirk Cousins was 24 for 38 for 354 yards,
including a 64-yard touchdown pass to DeSean
Jackson for the Redskins (1-5), but threw three
fourth-quarter interceptions. Washington has
lost four straight and 13 of 14.
Palmer had not played since damaging a
nerve in his throwing shoulder in the seasonopening win over San Diego.
PANTHERS 37, BENGALS 37, OT
No one came away satisfied in Cincinnati.
Especially Mike Nugent.
The Bengals kicker missed a 36-yard field goal
attempt on the final play of overtime. It was the
Bengals’ second tie at home in six years: They
finished 13-13 with Philadelphia in their last overtime game at Paul Brown Stadium in 2008.
Nugent made a 42-yard field goal that put
Cincinnati (3-1-1) up after the opening drive
of overtime. Carolina (3-2-1) tied it on Graham
Gano’s 36-yarder with 2:19 left.
Andy Dalton was nearly perfect in overtime,
going 8 for 9 for 87 yards with one throwaway.
He led the Bengals into range to win it, but
Nugent sliced the kick wide right.
BROWNS 31, STEELERS 10
A rarity in Cleveland: the Browns over the
Steelers. Brian Hoyer passed for 217 yards, with
a 51-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron.
Hoyer improved to 6-2 as the starter as the surprising Browns (3-2) beat the Steelers for the
third time in 23 games. Cleveland hadn’t beaten
Pittsburgh so badly since a 51-0 victory in 1989.
Ben Tate had two TDs rushing and rookie
Isaiah Crowell added another. Pittsburgh fell to
3-3, which is the worst record in the AFC North.
CHARGERS 31, RAIDERS 28
At Oakland, rookie Branden Oliver scored on
a 1-yard run with 1:56 to play to spoil interim
coach Tony Sparano’s Raiders debut. Oliver
rushed for 101 yards.
Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes
to give San Diego (5-1) its fifth straight win and
send Oakland (0-5) to its 11th straight loss.
Rookie Derek Carr threw four touchdown
passes for the Raiders.
Continued from page B7
PACKERS 27, DOLPHINS 24
The visiting Packers (4-2) staged a late rally
in the South Florida heat. Aaron Rodgers threw
a 4-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless
with 3 seconds left.
Green Bay trailed 24-17 before Rodgers
directed a 68-yard drive for a field goal with
4:09 to go. Miami couldn’t move the ball, and
Rodgers hit Jordy Nelson on fourth-and-10 for
18 yards to keep the winning drive alive.
Rodgers finished with three touchdown
passes and 264 yards while committing no
turnovers against the Dolphins (2-3), who lost
despite the return of six starters who had missed
playing time.
BEARS 27, FALCONS 13
At Atlanta, Jay Cutler threw for 381 yards
and a touchdown, while Matt Forte ran for two
second-half scores. Chicago (3-3) has won three
of four away from Soldier Field, though there
were so many Bears fans at the Georgia Dome
that it seemed almost like a neutral site.
The Falcons (2-4) lost their third in a row and
for the first time at home.
They had rallied from a 13-3 halftime deficit
to tie it before Forte put it away.
LIONS 17, VIKINGS 3
At Minneapolis, Tahir Whitehead intercepted
two passes, and Joique Bell put the game away
with a fourth-quarter touchdown run. Calvin
Johnson and Reggie Bush were sidelined, so
Detroit’s defense stepped up, getting eight
sacks, 2 1/2 by Ziggy Ansah. The Lions (4-2)
are tied with Green Bay atop the NFC North.
Rookie Teddy Bridgewater threw three
interceptions in his second career start for the
Vikings (2-4).
TITANS 16, JAGUARS 14
At Nashville, the Titans snapped their fourgame slide and kept Jacksonville winless.
Sammie Hill blocked a field goal attempt in
the final seconds and Ryan Succop kicked three
field goals to help the Titans (2-4) bounce back
after blowing the biggest lead ever by a home
team in the regular season against Cleveland.
Jurrell Casey had two of Tennessee’s six
sacks as the Titans won their first game at home
this season — only their second here in nine
games.
The Jaguars (0-6) scored with 37 seconds
left, recovered an onside kick, but Hill got his
right fingers on Josh Scobee’s 55-yard fieldgoal try.

Maui entering peak of
turtle hatching season
WAILEA, Hawaii (AP) — Maui is “just entering the peak”
of the turtle nesting/hatching season with 19 nests discovered
across the island this year, said an official with the Hawai’i
Wildlife Fund. “Nesting is over for the season, so we’re now at
the middle of hatching season,” Hannah Bernard, president of
Hawaii Wildlife Fund, told the Maui News.
Of the nests that have been discovered, three female green
sea turtles have been identified. One mother has laid four in
Lahaina, another has laid six at Hookipa Beach Park and the
final one has nested at least twice on a beach near Stable Road in
Paia. “The Lahaina female can lay as many as seven nests,” Bernard said Monday of the prolific turtle mother known as Maui
Girl. “She’s like supermom.”
Two hawksbill turtles have nested on Maui as well, with one
laying four nests in Kihei and another laying three nests on the
beach near the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge.
The nesting period, which is typically at night, can occur as
early as May and end as late as November, Bernard said.
“We’re seeing the green sea turtles nesting on the main
Hawaiian Islands more than in the past,” she said. “But it’s not a
lot. We’re only talking about a handful of turtles.”
Through the years, there have been a total of nine confirmed
nesting female sea turtles on Maui, with a possible 10th in Hana,
Bernard said. Both the green and hawksbill sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act. The hawksbill, which
is critically endangered, has between 20,000 to 23,000 nesting
females in the world, while the green sea turtle has between
85,000 to 90,000, according to the Sea Turtle Conservancy.
Green sea turtles in Hawaii nest every two years to six years
and between two to seven times per season, the Hawaii Wildlife
Fund said. Each female lays about 100 eggs in each nest.
Hawaii’s Hawksbill turtles nest every three to 14 years and
between two to five per season. Each female lays about 100 per
nest. While thousands of baby turtles hatch each year in the
U.S., only one in 1,000 to 5,000 will survive to adulthood, the
Hawaii Wildlife Fund said.
Residents and tourists were reminded to avoid disturbing the
sea turtles and their nesting grounds. The Hawaii Wildlife Fund
recommends that the public give turtles at least 10 feet of space in
the water and about 15 feet on the beach. In the Ask The Mayor
column published Monday in The Maui News, a writer asked
about conservation volunteers regulating visitations of nesting
turtles at Hookipa Beach Park. The volunteers told the writer to
turn off flashlights and to not take flash pictures. “We need to give
them space,” Bernard said, noting that the numbers of green sea
turtles have increased thanks to 36 years of government protection. “There are so many greens now that we’ve created a team in
helping to educate people on how to behave around green turtles.
Travelers cannot find outof-the-way Hawaii airport
HONOLULU (AP) — An airline is complaining that passengers are getting lost and missing their flights because of a lack of
road signs helping them find an out-of-the way Hawaii airport.
Mokulele Airlines is the first commercial airline to offer service out of a west Oahu airport that’s at a former naval air station. On July 1, the airline began offering three roundtrip flights
a day to Kahului, Maui, out of the Kalaeloa Airport.
“We’ve had a lot of no-shows because people miss the flight
because they can’t find the airport,” said CEO Ron Hansen.
There’s no airport sign on the freeway, and the road to the
airport has a series of merges and turns through some unpopulated areas. Despite the lack of signs, the airline has decided to
add more flights from Kalaeloa, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser
reported Monday. Next week, Mokulele plans to begin three
daily round trips between Kalaeloa and Hoolehua, Molokai, and
two daily round trips between Kalaeloa and Kapalua, Maui.
“We’ve asked the (state Department of Transportation) to
put up the normal signs that occur all over the 50 states, and
they’ve yet to do that,” Hansen said. “We’ve asked and asked
and asked. We’ve even put up little signs ourselves — like campaign signs— but the community takes them down because
they’re not approved.”
The transportation department is working with the city and
county and other state agencies to post signs, said Ross Higashi,
deputy director of airports.
Hansen said if the state fails to follow through with the signs,
Mokulele Airlines might have to pull out of service at the airport.
Hawaii Tourism Authority President and CEO Mike
McCartney said flights out of Kalaeloa provide an alternative to
Honolulu International Airport and help with development on
the island’s west side.
Search continues for
woman swept to sea
HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii couple celebrating an anniversary was apparently swept out
to sea while hiking near the popular snorkeling
spot Hanauma Bay.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Noemi
Alcotas and Jojo Acosta, both 34, were hit by a
large wave.
Hikers found the couple’s bags early Friday
afternoon near an attraction called Rock Bridge,
a prohibited area that’s considered dangerous.
A few hours later, rescuers found Acosta’s
body in the water, but Alcostas was not found.
The Coast Guard provided drift pattern maps,
and firefighters searched several miles of coastline from south of Hanauma Bay to Sandy Beach
Park, but found no sign of her.
The Coast Guard also helped in the search
for Alcotas, but suspended their efforts Sunday
night.
About 20 firefighters continued looking for
Alcotas by air, land and sea Monday, using local
knowledge of the coastline, said Honolulu Fire
Department Spokesman David Jenkins.
“She’s a nice girl,” said Nida Acosta, the wife
of Acosta’s uncle. “I’m happy when he met her
and somebody was taking care of him. They
loved each other...We were so happy.”
The couple had been classmates at Farrington
High School, Nida Acosta said.
They had recently started dating and were
heading out on a camping trip when the apparent
accident happened, said Acosta’s neighbor,
Dante Magallanes. Acosta, an Army veteran,
had served two tours in Iraq, and often helped
neighbors and family by cleaning and fixing
things, Magallanes said.
“He’s a good guy,” Magallanes said.
Tropical system could
become hurricane, hit Hawaii
HONOLULU (AP) — A tropical depression
in the Pacific Ocean is on track to become a hurricane that could hit Hawaii’s Big Island Saturday morning.
Tropical Depression Two-C is expected to
strengthen and to become a hurricane Wednesday
as it moves toward Hawaii.
Meteorologist Tom Evans of the National
Weather Service in Honolulu says the storm is
headed toward Hawaii Island’s Puna region,
which was hit hard by Tropical Storm Iselle in
August. Evans says this storm is expected to be
stronger than Iselle, but that could change.
Iselle hit the islands with winds up to 78 miles
per hour, but Two-C is expected to blow in at 90
miles per hour.
Two-C is about 920 miles east-southeast of
Hilo, travelling 10 miles per hour.
Evans urged families to stock up on supplies.
E-cigarettes banned from
Hawaii state buildings
HONOLULU (AP) — Electronic cigarettes
are now banned from Hawaii state government
buildings.
The state Department of Health announced
Monday the policy went into effect this month
and is part of the state’s effort to keep workplaces and public locations smoke-free.
Health Director Linda Rosen says tests show
vapors or aerosols from e-cigarettes contain nicotine, toxic chemicals and other carcinogens that
are just as harmful as secondhand smoke from
regular cigarettes.
The policy is based on a law that went into
effect in 2006 that prohibits smoking tobacco
products in places open to the public and
workplaces.
The Health Department hopes the policy sets
the tone for private sector employers and others.
A Hawaii County councilman’s bill seeks to
ban electronic cigarettes and vaporizers from
Big Island beaches, parks and facilities.
Snow expected on Hawaii
Island’s tallest peaks
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — Up to
three inches of snow could fall on two mountain
peaks that rise from the tropical landscape of
Hawaii’s Big Island. West Hawaii Today reports
that the peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa
could have snow showers and thunder storms on
slopes above 12,000 feet.
The National Weather Service says a winter
weather advisory will be in effect from Monday
at noon until Tuesday at 6 a.m. Forecasters warn
that the snow could cause travel problems and
that visibility could be reduced to one mile.
The wind could gust to more than 50 miles
per hour Monday night, and temperatures are
expected to fall into the lower 30s.
Maui man’s body recovered
from submerged vehicle
HONOLULU (AP) — Maui authorities say
the body of a 50-year-old Kihei man has been
recovered from a vehicle that was submerged in
the ocean. Donald Craig Clary was pronounced
dead at the scene Saturday morning off the scenic
lookout of the Honoapiilani Highway.
Authorities say the vehicle went off the cliff
and was submerged in about 10 feet of water.
Union takes stand against
preschool initiative
(AP) — A proposed constitutional amendment
that would allow the state to partner with private
preschools could hurt public schools, according
to the state teacher’s union. The Hawaii State
Teachers Association opposes the measure and
says preschool children would be best served by
preschools within community public schools, the
Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
“Constitutional amendment No. 4 would take
money away from the public schools and benefit
private preschools,” said HSTA President Wil
Okabe. “We feel that because the infrastructure
is in place — there is a public school in every
community — and we have certified and trained
teachers, we can do it. Our No. 1 issue is equity
and accessibility — that no kids be left behind.”
The measure is one of five proposed constitutional amendments on the Nov. 4 ballot.
Just half of Hawaii’s 3- and 4-year-olds enter
kindergarten with a preschool education.
Hawaii plans to mandate
boater safety course
HONOLULU (AP) — The state of Hawaii
is planning to require boaters to complete safety
courses. KHON-TV says that boat operators will
have to show proof of completing an approved
safety course, starting Nov. 10.
The law was signed in November 2012.
However, a two-year delay was allowed before
it became effective. Boaters violating the law
could face fines of up to $1,000.
They also could face up to 30 days in jail.
Maui Memorial in partnership talks with Kaiser
WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — Maui Memorial
Medical Center is in talks with Kaiser Permanente Hawaii about a possible partnership.
The Maui News reported Saturday the talks
began this summer. The state-funded hospital
has been in similar discussions with Hawaii
Pacific Health since July.
Kaiser Permanente Hawaii President Mary
Ann Barnes says the nonprofit health care system
would keep Maui’s only acute care hospital
open to the community and not limit its usage to
Kaiser members.
The state Legislature must first pass a bill
allowing such a public-private partnership before
Maui Memorial may team up with either party.
Attempts to pass such legislation ended with
bills mired in committee during the past two
years. Hawaii’s public hospitals are struggling as
state funding shrinks even as salaries and other
expenses rise.

Gobert’s double-double
lifts Jazz over Clippers
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Trey Burke scored 16 points and had eight assists while Rudy
Gobert chipped in 11 points and 20 rebounds to lift the Utah Jazz to a 102-89 victory over the Los
Angeles Clippers on Monday night.
Derrick Favors added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz (3-0) who remain undefeated in
the preseason. Blake Griffin scored 31 points, JJ Redick added 17 points and Chris Paul finished
with 11 points and 11 assists for the Clippers (0-3) who are still winless.
Utah exerted its will around the basket for four quarters. The Jazz outrebounded the Clippers
55-32 and had a 48-36 advantage in points in the paint. Utah also had a 22-9 edge on second
chance points. Strong perimeter play also lifted the Jazz. Utah shot 47 percent from outside (14of-30) to break open the game early in the first half.
Butler leads Bulls to 110-90 win over Nuggets
CHICAGO (AP) — Jimmy Butler scored 21 points while rookie Doug McDermott added 16 to
lead the Chicago Bulls to a 110-90 rout of the Denver Nuggets in an exhibition game on Monday
night. Kenneth Faried led a balanced Nuggets offense with 19 points. Jusuf Nurkic scored 15 and
Timofey Mozgov and Arron Afflalo each added 10 for Denver (1-3).
Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson each scored 15 while Nikola Mirotic added 12 for the Bulls (2-2).
After trailing early, Denver pushed to a 30-19 lead after one quarter and led by as many as 21
in the second quarter before Chicago launched a 29-4 run to force a 58-58 halftime tie on Tony
Snell’s fast-break dunk with six seconds showing. The Bulls led 83-75 after three quarters and the
Nuggets never got closer than eight in the fourth.
Jones leads Rockets to 95-92 win over Suns
HOUSTON (AP) — Terrence Jones scored 18 points and Isaiah Canaan put Houston ahead
for good with a three-point play with 29 seconds left as the Rockets defeated the Phoenix Suns
95-92 on Monday night. Phoenix had a chance to tie with 12 seconds left, but Archie Goodwin’s
3-pointer missed, and Kostas Papanikolaou grabbed the rebound.
Houston was playing without Dwight Howard, who sat out for a second straight game with a
bruised knee, and James Harden, who sat out with a bruised hip.
Canaan finished with 16 points while Troy Daniels added 12 points as the Rockets overcame 5
of 30 shooting from behind the arc and hitting 61 percent from the free throw line. Eric Bledsoe
had 13 points in 20 minutes, and Goran Dragic added 12 points in 18 minutes for the Suns.
Lou Williams scores 21, Raptors beat Knicks 81-76
NEW YORK (AP) — Lou Williams scored 21 points and the Toronto Raptors beat New York
81-76 on Monday night in the Knicks’ preseason home opener.
With starting point guard Kyle Lowry sitting this one out, Williams came off the bench and
shot 6 of 9 from the field in 24 minutes. Toronto acquired him in June from Atlanta.
Carmelo Anthony scored nine points on 4-of-6 shooting in 15 minutes for the Knicks, who had
just one player in double figures. J.R. Smith had 10 on 4-of-12 shooting.
Toronto center Jonas Valanciunas also got the night off, and former Raptors No. 1 overall pick
Andrea Bargnani of the Knicks sat out with a strained right hamstring. Coach Derek Fisher said it
was possible Bargnani could play Tuesday in Syracuse against Philadelphia, though the medical
staff might prefer he gets a little more rest.
The Knicks opened an 8-0 lead but were horrendous offensively from there as they work to
implement the triangle offense that Fisher played in Los Angeles under Phil Jackson. They managed just four more points in the first quarter and shot 3 of 23 (13 percent) from 3-point range.
Hornets rally to beat Magic 99-97
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Third-string point guard Jannero Pargo scored 16 points in the
fourth quarter as the Charlotte Hornets rallied for a 99-97 preseason victory over the Orlando
Magic on Monday night. Pargo, pushed into action after starter Kemba Walker came out of the
game in the third quarter with a left knee contusion, hit 6 of 10 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers,
as the Hornets rallied from a five-point deficit.
Al Jefferson added 20 points, and had a key block on Elfrid Payton’s layup attempt that would
have tied the score. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 14 point, Walker 11 and Gary Neal 10 for Charlotte, which won its second straight exhibition game.
Ben Gordon scored 17 points for the Magic. Tobias Harris and Payton had 14 each while
Nikola Vucevic added 10 as Orlando lost for the first time in three preseason games

FINE DINING

Happy Birthday: Don’t fold under pressure. Stick
to your game plan and put any negativity behind you.
Pursue your plans passionately and make unexpected alterations as you go along to bypass any
interference you foresee. Create your own opportunities and take full credit for your successes. You can
get ahead if you are persistent and believe in your
abilities. Your numbers are 1, 5, 13, 21, 26, 31, 45.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Make decisions
that will spice up your life and add a little adventure to your day. Spending time with someone you
love, starting a new class or visiting a destination
you haven’t been to before will wake the spirit
within you. ✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Communication will
help you find solutions to any problem you face
with a personal or professional partner. A change
regarding an investment will pay off. Don’t hesitate
to let your imagination wander. Take precautions
when dealing with peers. ✸✸✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don’t be fooled by
someone’s vague response to your questions.
Either someone is on your team or not. Focus on
the people who give back and are charged up by
the plans you have and the options you offer. ✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Look for greater stability by being original and progressive regarding the
changes that need to be made. If you continue to
spin your wheels, nothing will get done. Size up your
situation and make your move. Don’t let an uncertain relationship dictate your decision. ✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Spontaneity will lead to
fun and games. Enjoy putting your best foot forward and embracing any playful challenge that
comes your way. Love is in the stars and romance
will improve your personal life. A change will be welcome. ✸✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Keep your private
affairs a secret and you will avoid an emotional
situation that can hinder your job prospects. Anger
solves nothing, but getting your chores out of the
way will ease discord. A change in your finances
must be handled with care. ✸✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don’t let emotions ruin
your day. Make positive changes that will help keep
the peace. Change may be required, but it’s the way
you go about it that will make the difference. Being
sympathetic will help you win favors. ✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Check out different
lifestyle choices and make the choice that intrigues
you the most. Keep your plans a secret if you suspect someone will interfere. Once you have everything in place, it will difficult for anyone to stand in
your way. ✸✸✸✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Put more
thought and effort into your work and getting ahead
and you will find a way to help your assets grow
and job prospects open up. Love is on the rise
and a change of heart will lead to an interesting
encounter. ✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Keep your distance from anyone who appears to be unpredictable. You are best to protect your reputation, your
ideas and your emotional well-being. Focus on
making unusual changes to the way you do your
work and you will stabilize your position. ✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Contracts, settlements and medical and financial matters can all be
addressed in a timely and effective manner. You
stand to get ahead if you don’t let your emotions
get in the way. Look, see and do. Love is in the
stars. ✸✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don’t make
changes, but accept the inevitable and protect your
position, reputation and your assets. Refuse to get
into a no-win situation with someone looking for a
fight. Look inward and focus on self-improvement.
✸✸✸✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are sensitive, ambitious and
creative. You are entertaining and intelligent.
Dear Abby
by Abigail Van Buren
TRANSGENDER EX-HUSBAND IS EMBARRASSMENT TO HIS SONS
DEAR ABBY: After 10 years of marriage, my
now ex-husband told me he is transgender. He isn’t
taking hormones, but he makes no attempt to hide
his feminine dressing, makeup and wigs from our
6- and 9-year-old sons. They understand little of
their dad’s new life, other than that their dad likes
“girl stuff.” They often tell me they are embarrassed
being with their dad in public when he has his nails
painted or is wearing female clothing.
I have tried talking to my ex about this, but he
becomes resentful when I bring it up. He feels he can
do whatever he wants regardless of how he embarrasses our sons. Do you think I could take him to
court to have an order put in place that he not dress
like that when he has our children? -- NEEDS TO
KNOW IN NEW YORK
DEAR NEEDS TO KNOW: You could discuss it
with your divorce lawyer, but I don’t think it would
work. It would be much better if you asked your ex to
explain to his boys the reason he’s dressing in female
attire so they can understand it. Your husband is not
going to change, so they are going to have to interact
with him until they are quite a bit older.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
DEAR ABBY: Our nephew, whom we raised, has
offered my husband and me a lovely home to live in
during our “senior years.” We are both in our 70s,
live on Social Security, and I am physically unable
to do much of anything, so our nephew has also
offered us a weekly gardener and a house cleaner
twice a month.
Abby, how are we ever going to be able to repay
his generosity? My children are not in a position to
offer us much help, but they plan to be around and
help with additions to the house, painting and things
like that. How can I repay them for the labor they’re
going to expend? I’m so grateful to all of them and
feel helpless to let them know how I feel. -- SO
GRATEFUL IN ROMNEY, W.VA.
DEAR SO GRATEFUL: You have obviously been
a wonderful parent to your children and the nephew
you raised like a son. Now it’s time for them to repay
YOU, so please relax and accept it. Because you
want to give them something, consider assembling
family albums for each of them or a cookbook containing some of your special recipes. I am sure that
receiving such treasures along with your thanks and
your love will be compensation enough.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
DEAR ABBY: I have an 11-year-old daughter who
was diagnosed with severe ADHD and anxiety at the
age of 7. She is receiving treatment for her condition.
My problem is, I don’t know how to cope with
her and her condition. I get impatient and frustrated
when I have to continually repeat myself because
she’s not doing what she has to do. I’m afraid I may
have hurt her by lashing out at her in anger, and I
catch myself yelling and screaming more than hugging and praising. I need to find help and resources
to educate me and provide support for this very real
condition. -- IN ADHD TURMOIL
DEAR IN TURMOIL: A place to start would be to
discuss your concerns with the doctor or therapist
who has been treating your daughter. Your feelings
are not unusual, and he or she may be able to direct
you to a parent support group in your area.
If that’s not possible, go online and search “support groups for parents of children with ADHD.” You
will find many pages of resources -- so many that it’s
not possible to list all of them here.
