During your Instructor course, you will conduct an In-Class Scenario Presentation.
20 minutes in duration
Must be fully completed and prepared BEFORE the start of class
Must be accompanied by a Scenario Lesson Plan…with an extra copy for your Instructor-Trainer
Meets benchmarks as outlined in the Presentations Checklist
Your assigned, specific presentation topics are listed below o With some general guidelines to assist you in preparation.
Presentations will be delivered as though you are teaching to newer First Responder students
Each presentation must be accompanied by a written Lesson Plan.
Bring a second copy of your Lesson Plan to give your Instructor-Trainer o These Lesson Plans will contribute toward your success in your Instructor course .
Feel free to draw on previous training or instructional experiences while developing the Lesson Plans for your presentations. o However…it is important that the specific information delivered is consistent with current Canadian Red
Cross First Responder guidelines. o Whenever possible…ensure that Students will be able to reference and verify the information you provide in either their Student Manuals, or additional hand-outs. o This information, along with guidance on developing your Lesson Plan can be found throughout your course materials. o Basic instructional tools, such as Flipcharts, Whiteboard, Mannequins, AED trainers and first aid supplies will be available, but you may need to provide any special props or materials you require.
Your classmates and your Instructor-Trainer will provide you with Feedback after each presentation, with an emphasis on Instructional Delivery and Technical Accuracy (according to current Canadian Red Cross First
Responder guidelines)
It is not expected that a 20 minute Presentation will cover every possible aspect of each topic o Present 20 minutes’ worth of your topic, in a relevant and learner centered format o DON’T try to cram 60 minutes of material and activities into 20 minutes

Keeping your students engaged in meaningful activities will generally result in better learning outcomes than making them passively receive information
Prepare your Lesson Plans as though you are presenting these topics to newer learners in an EMR class
Audio-Visual Equipment and Computers o Power point Slideshows, Video Clips and other media can be powerful presentation tools
They can also be fickle and unreliable if you are unfamiliar with your equipment o If you are planning to use a computer with a Projector / Television screen
Make sure all your equipment and files are compatible ahead of time
We strongly recommend that you bring and use your own laptop for that purpose o If you are using someone else’s equipment, with files stored on a data-stick
Check all aspects of compatibility and functionality well ahead of time o Lesson times should NOT include equipment set-up, maintenance or adjustment
If you are using media with sound…ensure the volume is sufficient for the classroom
DO NOT rely on internet connection to play “youtube” style clips or links o If the power goes out…or your equipment fails…the show must go on

Emphasis on applying a student’s existing knowledge and skills in a realistic scenario…and evaluating the student’s performance based on pre-determined criteria, checklists and benchmarks.
This could include: o Arriving on scene, uncovering the nature of the illness or injury, and applying appropriate mitigation measures o Practicing a familiar skill in a new/unusual/unexpected circumstance…requiring on the spot modification
While remaining within the established parameters and limits of scope and training o Practicing multiple skills in a single scenario…forcing the student to recognize and prioritize multiple problems while maintaining assessment model continuity
Your Canadian Red Cross Emergency Care Instructor Manual refer ences Scenarios…and is an excellent resource for preparing your Presentations o Scenario sheets should include a checklist of skills and required outcomes, assessment findings and
Instructions for patients and bystanders. o After completing the Scenario…participants should have a clear idea of whether or not they met your expectations in their scenario, and what they could improve.
You may find it useful to view a pre-made example of a Checklist for a Scenario Presentation o Download here
You may also find it useful to prepare your own Lesson Plan on a Blank Scenario Template o Download here o You are free to use any format or structure that appeals to you o The Lesson Plan / Scenario Checklist you submit to your Instructor-Trainer forms part of your course completion criteria…and should match the Scenario as performed in class.
