Property D-2 Preliminary Syllabus Property I, Fall: Mon./Wed., 1:30 - 2:45 p.m., Room 304 Peter J. Karol pkarol@nesl.edu Tel: x 7327 Room 417 Fall Office Hours: Tues. 4:00 pm -7:00 pm; Wed. 10:00 am – 1 pm - by appointment with the Faculty Receptionist Text: Property Law: Rules, Policies and Practices, 6th Ed., Joseph William Singer (Aspen 2014) Readings are assigned according to the table below. Please be sure to closely read any statutory provision or “Problem” covered in the assigned text, even if not specifically listed below. Cases not in the reading are all hyperlinked or posted by PDF on Twen (I give a full, formal, citation to indicate a case not in the reading). I expect you to check the class page on Twen regularly, and to keep your email address current on Twen, as I will use the page to post revisions and additional case materials. At times, we will not get to a certain case or reading during the assigned class due to time constraints. I still expect you to remain familiar with that reading for the next class (in addition to the readings assigned on the syllabus for that next class). I expect to teach the class largely on a cold-call basis. Everyone is expected to be prepared for class every day, including a close familiarity with the cases, statutes, problems and other readings. If, for a legitimate reason, you are not able to prepare for a given class, I expect you to email me at least two hours before class to let me know. You may elect to pass if called upon for a given question; however passes without the two hours prior notification may impact your participation grade negatively. You are always welcome and encouraged to participate voluntarily, in addition to being called upon. Each semester, your grades will primarily be based on a final exam. Quality class participation may impact your grade positively. Unexcused passes, excessive absences, or missed or late assignments may impact your participation grade negatively. I will be assigning two practice exams throughout the year, as well as other shorter assignments. You are expected to draft a complete written answer to these practice essays and questions, and upload them to the Drop Box section of the Property Class Twen site. We will generally discuss the questions, and model answer, as a class. The assignments will NOT be graded, however failure to complete them or submit them in a timely manner may impact your participation grade negatively. You are strongly encouraged to meet with me at office hours to discuss the material and/or review any of your written work individually.
