114-011 – Civil Procedure – Schaffzin
Class One: What do you imagine might be covered in a class called “Civil Procedure”? What sort of
clients do you think should be concerned that their lawyers understand procedure? Why do we have
procedure? How did procedure affect the litigation in A Civil Action?
Assignment:
 Read A Civil Action by Jonathan Harr. The book reads like a novel. Just enjoy your first read
through it. Don’t worry about how the book will apply to the course. We will return to portions
of the book throughout the semester.
 Read the Introductions to A Documentary Companion to A Civil Action.
 Enroll in my class on Lexis’s Blackboard Webcourse.
 Read my Syllabus posted on Blackboard.
 Read chapter 1 in Civil Procedure: A Coursebook.

If you are in Professor Shapiro's Criminal Law Section, please be certain that you have purchased the
SIXTH edition of Joshua Dressler & Stephen P. Garvey, CASES AND MATERIALS ON CRIMINAL
LAW. The assignment for the first class is at pages 92-103 end of note 1.

1. Required book: PROSSER, WADE & SCHWARTZ’S TORTS: CASE AND MATERIALS
(Foundation Press 12th ed. 2010).
2. Pick up a copy of the Supplemental Materials for Torts I (SM) from the box outside my office
(Room 372).
3. First week assignments: Wednesday: SM pp. 1-13; Casebook pp. iv-v; 1–10 (omitting Weaver v.
Ward); 17–20. Friday: Casebook pp. 24–25 (Ranson v. Kitner only; stop at McGuire v. Almy).
4. Register for the Torts I, Section 12 TWEN site, and go to “Course Materials” for more complete
course instructions and documents.

- 28 U.S.C. § 2072 (U.S.C. = “United States Code”)
3. During the week of August 11, please register for the "Civ Pro I - Section 012" TWEN site. The
