According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, adults without a diploma earn almost $10,000 less a year than high school graduates. "If you look at job postings, almost everyone says high school diploma or GED, at a minimum," said Mimi Coenen, senior director at Palm Beach County's Workforce Alliance. "Employers want to know that you're able to find, calculate and communicate information and those are basic competencies that a high school equivalency confirms you have." Few companies outside the service industry hire individuals without any type of diploma, so a GED is essential for employment and salary opportunities, business experts say. The GED is seen as a second chance for high school dropouts; it's the only test they can take to earn a diploma without going back to school. More than 1 million Floridians over 25 years old don't have such diplomas, and last year 45,000 took the test. "We have new technology, and that creates the need to increase your base knowledge," said Jorge Avellana, of the Hispanic Human Resources Council Inc. of Palm Beach County. "People rise to the level that they're expected to achieve." Starting in January, the General Education Development test -- the equivalent of a high school diploma -- will emphasize critical thinking skills over memorization and will only be offered online. The overhaul is designed to meet changing demands in the workplace and higher education. South Florida is seeing a spike in applicants rushing to earn their GEDs before tougher new standards kick in. 8/10/2013 ...type of diploma, so a GED is essential for employment and salary opportunities, business experts say. "And with increased education in basic computing and even more intermediate usage of computer skills, they may be better off." Michael Kravitz, president and director of employment for Career Connection of Broward Inc., said the improving economy, coupled with the new test's computer and critical thinking skills, will create more opportunities for GED-holders. "We have to reflect what's being taught in the current high school curriculum," said Diaz. Forty-five states, including Florida, have adopted new Common Core standards that will be fully implemented by the 2014 school year. Those standards focus on concepts and strategies instead of just mastering content. It'll also sync with national curriculum changes for K-12 students. Contentwise, the test will include more critical thinking, analysis and evidence based questions. Next year, the test will condense to four sections -- social studies, science, math and reasoning through language arts -- and just be offered online, which costs $128 versus the $70 paper version. Students have until the end of the year to pass the current test's five sections, which can be taken at different times online or by hand. If not, they'll have to start from scratch in January. "Staff is telling me that more people are coming in to ask about books and materials for the GED," she said. "It's predominantly people who already passed one portion. They're the ones who feel threatened because they've been studying for years." The Broward County library is adding its first-ever GED class this fall to respond to growing demand, said Vonda Bryant, coordinator of the learning services department. Mary Powers, assistant principal for adult education at Atlantic High School in Delray Beach, called the increase at her school "significant" and said concerns over missing the deadline have "given them an incentive to speed it up a little." For four years, people watched me during the mornings on WPTV,'' said LaPonzina Saver, of Jupiter, who is expecting her first child next month. On average, she charges $1,000 per day for a TV commercial shoot. But her "bread and butter" is the consulting biz. Her rate there: $250 an hour for large companies. Local companies including Tenet Healthcare Corp. and Workforce Alliance, both in Palm Beach County, sought her for TV and web videos. One commercial for The Law Office of Paul A. After signing off from WPTV in 2012, she briefly worked in media relations for Wellington Regional Medical Center before leaving to launch her own media consulting business, Headlines Consulting. But she hasn't been off the air completely. "It was a really tough decision. I had done nothing but television news for 12 years. I loved it dearly, however I had always worked the morning shows,'' said LaPonzina Saver, 34, who also worked in the Orlando TV market. Looking for a lifestyle change, LaPonzina Saver left her station job last year, having grown tired of her 2 a.m. wakeup call to helm the 4:30 a.m. weekday newscast. And then there's LaPonzina Saver, who introduces herself as a news anchor in a TV commercial for Laser Therapy Spa's Botox and skin treatments and asks viewers: "Are you ready to be more beautiful without the dangers of invasive surgery?" Segreto's online video segment for Action Air Inc. in Pembroke Park shows him asking the owner what to look for in a good A/C repair company. Mayer and Lauderdale talk wellness in ads for AvMed Health Plans "These anchors have instant recognizability and likability, so that helps these commercials stand out from the pack because consumers are instantly drawn to these familiar faces,'' said Kimberly Taylor, associate marketing professor at Florida International University. "But even more important than that, though, is the fact that because they were journalists and anchors, they became trusted, impartial sources for information." "By putting the celebrity-driven video on their website, it gives people a warm fuzzy feeling. The companies must be legitimate, otherwise these guys would not be involved with them." For the past three years, Bob Pianka, executive producer at Spotlight TV News, has connected former anchors such as Segreto, WTVJCh. 6 longtime health reporter and anchor reporter Gerri Helfman and WPTV's Laurel Sauer for web ads presented in a news magazine format. While some companies reach out directly to former anchors for commercials, one Sunrise production studio, Spotlight TV News, specializes in pairing the former TV personalities with brands that match their interests and/or beats from their news days. "I help write and produce the spots in a way that makes them have value for the consumer, the viewers and the sponsor,'' said Mayer, 66, who left WTVJ in 2010 after 40 years. "All these spots I work on have the feel of consumer reports." The ex-WTVJ broadcaster was known for his consumer reports, he said, and sees the commercial work as an extension of that. In addition to AvMed, Mayer has also appeared in spots for Good Neighbor Pharmacy. And beginning in November, he'll be in a series of TV and web spots called "Are You Car Smart?" sponsored by JM Lexus. "He is a trusted personality and our feedback from the members reflected that." AvMed Medicare sought out Lauderdale "because he has instant credibility and instant recognition in the community we are trying to service in the South Florida area,'' company spokeswoman Conchita Ruiz-Topinka said. "Because he has such a strong reputation as a news person, he was very careful to make sure that we were a service that he could stand behind. Lauderdale, who said he no longer lives in South Florida, declined to be interviewed for this story. For LaPonzina Saver, it hasn't. "I am not a journalist anymore; what will I have to be impartial about at this point?" Has it been difficult for these broadcasters to transition from being the impartial newsperson to a pitchperson? "We as viewers believed they were telling us the truth when they delivered the news,'' FIU's Taylor said. "But if we believe they are still credible and trustworthy, we are inclined to believe them even when they are pitching products.'' endorsement by appearing in these spots.
