NCCU TAU PSI CHAPTER:
CHANGING THE CAMPUS IMAGE—
GOING FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE
BOARDROOM!
Sixth District Q-View, Volume 2009-2010, Issue No. 2
Final Message from the Director of Public Relations
Dear Brothers,
Brother MAJ Michael A. Boykin
Director of Public Relations
As Sixth District Director of
Public Relations, it is with mixed
emotions that I offer my final
edition of the Sixth District
Q-View.
Over the past three years, we
have taken this publication to new
heights and we have seen a
number of final products that are
keepsakes; capturing local
chapter events, Sixth District
events and spectacular activities
throughout the Fraternity and
even throughout the world.
There have been many
monumental accomplishments in
the lives of our brothers through
lifetime professional and personal
achievements and scholarship
attainment.
God’s Minute
I have only just a minute,
Only sixty seconds in it,
Forced upon me– can’t refuse it,
Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it.
But it’s up to me to use it.
I must suffer if I lose it.
Give account if I abuse it,
Just a tiny little minute—
But eternity is in it.
By Brother Benjamin E. Mays
(8/1/1894—3/28/1984)
There have also been
significant events that have taken
place on the world stage that we
have witnessed. The historical
2008 election of President Barack
Hussein Obama is something that
will be talked about for years and
even decades to come.
The loss of one of the all-time
greatest entertainers, Mr. Michael
Joseph Jackson, in June 2009 was
felt around the world.
The 2010 earthquake
devastation in Haiti that led to
over 200,000 deaths will take
sustained world commitment to
rebuilding in that country.
The 2009 death of former NFL
Quarterback, Brother Steve
McNair, was a great loss to his
family, friends and the entire
community.
The wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan continue to require
billions and billions of US dollars,
international resources and
hundreds of Soldiers, Sailors,
Sixth District Q-View, Volume 2009-2010, Issue No. 2
Marines, and Airmen have paid the
ultimate price since these wars
began in the early 2003.
The great debate about
healthcare reform in the United
States and the problem of having
nearly 50 million uninsured
Americans takes center stage for
President Obama. The passage of
the Healthcare Reform Act is as
historic as his presidential election.
This matter will truly define his
presidency as this was a central
theme in his campaign.
As I reflect on my time, it has
been a rewarding challenge to
develop, implement and enforce
editorial standards that helped
place our fraternal activities in high
regard throughout the Fraternity
and the community at large.
Working with brothers from small
chapters, large chapters and
everything in between has shaped
me in ways that will remain with me
forever.
Now, it’s time for me to close
this chapter and start another. I
will continue to be a Soldier for
Omega! Thank you for allowing me
to serve as your District Director of
Public Relations. I have tried to
leave this office in better shape
than when I entered.
In closing, I want to share one of
my favorite poems, “God’s Minute,”
as it captures the importance of
every minute that we have to make
a difference as we continue our
journey in life and in Omega. Best
wishes to you and yours in the
years to come!
Fraternally,
Major Michael A. Boykin, MBA
Sixth District Director of PR

BROTHER OCTAVIO MIRO, DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE

BROTHER MICHAEL A. BOYKIN, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS

May 2, 2010
From the Sixth District Representative’s Desk . . .
Brothers and Friends:
The 65th Sixth District Annual
Meeting marks the culmination
of two years of service and
leadership as Chief Executive
Officer of the Mighty Sixth
District. These two years have
been filled with joy and
challenges.
It is indeed a privilege to be
the District Representative of the
Sixth District. You get to assume
a unique role in Omega’s
complex organizational
structure. You interact, in a different way, with many
brothers and others, who, for whatever reason, have a
need to interact with you. You get to serve the District
on the Supreme Council of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Inc. In that role, you meet many more brothers and
those who have interest in Omega. Therefore, as you
progress through the experience, you change the way
you experience others. To me, that experience has
been great.
However, the greatest experience you have as
District Representative, I believe, is to experience the
BROTHERHOOD, the FRIENDSHIP. In Omega we say,
“Friendship is Essential to the Soul.” The Brotherhood
of Omega tends to fill your Soul with joy and challenges.
The joy you experience is the Friendship one Soul has
towards another. It is a Friendship like no other that I
have experienced.
The challenges are those you might experience in
any other organization like Omega. Because we have so
many members to manage, to keep organized, often it is
a challenge to persevere to make it work. Somehow,
however, the fact that we are friends, seems to temper
the frustration of the challenges. For the most part, we
were able to meet those challenges with relative
success.
Now, as I leave my post as District Representative
and as I close this message, it would not be complete if I
did not thank the many of you who played an integral
role in the progress and success of our administration. I
especially want to thank the Executive Committee. I
Sixth District Q-View, Volume 2009-2010, Issue No. 2
have said before, no leader could have had a better
team of brothers to work with and help move the Sixth
District forward than the one I had these last two years.
Early on, I said to them that my style of
administration is participatory, one of inclusion, and
that is what we did. I was able to do that, however,
because these brothers were willing and more than
capable of handling the challenges. The charge to lead
this District was not solely about the District
Representative, but about the Brotherhood.
We have also had a strong cadre of committee
chairs, who made certain the various programs of the
District and of the Fraternity were carried out. These
brothers monitored what chapters and brothers were
doing in the various communities across the District.
And, even though they were challenged too, they met
those challenges with ease because of their love and
dedication to Omega.
We owe a debt of gratitude to a number of brothers
and friends across the District and across the nation,
not included above, for the kind assistance they offered
from time to time as we tried to move the Mighty Sixth
District forward. Thank you so very much!
There is so much more that needs to be said, but
space would not permit that. Therefore, it is probably
best to say to my Brothers in Omega, thank you so
much for the confidence you showed in my ability to
lead the Sixth District. Thanks to my wife, Gerri, and
my family for the love and understanding they
demonstrated during my tenure as District
Representative. And, thanks to the Supreme Basileus of
the Universe for giving me the Grace and wisdom to
have taken on this challenge and experience the
abundant joy.

National News: Facts About Social Security
Most people know that they
can file for retirement,
disability, and/or spouse
benefits either by phone or in
person. There is a third safe
and maybe more convenient
way- Social Security Online!
A recent survey revealed
Social Security’s online
Brother Paul D. Barnes
retirement benefit application
once again ranked at the top of all Federal
government websites in customer satisfaction. No
wonder last year more than 50 million people took
advantage of doing business with us online by simply
clicking www.socialsecurity.gov.
Here are some of the services
you can take advantage of
online:
Personalized Retirement
Estimator. This tool allows
you to get an immediate and
personalized estimate of your
potential Social Security retirement benefit. If the
information you enter matches our records it is
combined with other information, including your
yearly earnings, to provide a quick and reliable
online benefit estimate. The Retirement Estimator
allows you to compare different retirement options
by changing your “stop work” dates or expected
earnings. To protect your privacy, only your benefit
estimates are provided online.
Apply for benefits. You can apply for Social Security
retirement, spouse or disability benefits over the
Internet. If you are applying for disability benefits
you’ll need to complete the disability report, which is
also available online. Disability appeals claims can
be filed online too. After filing, you can check online
for the status of the application. Documents will be
signed electronically.
Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Cost.
If you are eligible for Medicare and Medicare Part D
(prescription drug coverage) you may also be able to
receive “extra-help” in paying for the monthly
premium, deductibles, and co-payment. This is
available for people who have limited income and

resources and can be worth as much as $3,900 per
year in savings.
Business Services Online (BSO). Registered
users may request, activate and access various BSO
services and functions such as verifying Social
Security numbers and names of employees,
sending W2 and W2c forms to Social Security and
more.
Request a Statement. Annually we send a Social
Security Statement to all workers age 25 or older. It
arrives about three months before your birthday.
The Statement includes a detailed report of
earnings over the years, an estimate of benefits one
would receive upon retirement or disability, and an
estimate of how much family members would be
eligible for in survivor benefits. If you can’t wait for
the regularly scheduled Statement, request one
online and you will receive it within 2-4 weeks.
Also online you can find the nearest Social Security
office, change your address, phone number, or
direct deposit information, and much more.
Whatever your business needs with Social Security
maybe you can save a trip to the local office by
checking out our website at
www.socialsecurity.gov.
Please contact us at (800) 772-1213 between the
hours of 7 am and 7 pm Monday through Friday for

Mayor Clarence E. Lightner Inducted into 2009 Raleigh Hall of Fame
when race relations in the south could sometimes
be unpredictable. Mayor Lightner captured 52.9%
of the total vote, of which, the Black vote
accounted for only 22.7%. Blacks totaled only
15.5% of registered voters at the time of the 1973
mayoral race.
August 15, 1921—July 8, 2002
Raleigh, NC—Mayor Clarence E. “Baby” Lightner
was truly a man for all seasons. He exemplified the
qualities of leadership through his tireless and selfless
service to the city of Raleigh throughout his entire
lifetime. In September 2009, Brother Clarence E.
Lightner (Tau Psi Chapter 1943) was posthumously
inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame.
Born in Raleigh on August 15, 1921, to Calvin E.
Lightner and Mamie Blackmond, Clarence E. Lightner
was educated in the Raleigh Public Schools, graduated
from North Carolina Central University in Durham and
the Echols College of Mortuary Science in
Philadelphia. After a tour of duty in the U.S. Army
during World War II, he returned home to manage
Lighner Funeral Home for 45 years.
In 1973, he was elected mayor of Raleigh. He was
the first and, to date the only African-American citizen
to serve in this capacity in North Carolina's capital city.
Prior to becoming mayor, Brother Lightner proved
himself a political leader and a respected public
servant with six years in city council where he headed
a committee studying mass transit needs and also
acted for a brief while as Raleigh’s Mayor Pro Tem.
This background made Raleigh voters like what
they saw. This was important because voters, black
and white, were supportive of his candidacy in a time
Political observers in the South were both
surprised and elated by Mayor Lightner’s success.
They viewed it as a possible trend toward
interracial coalitions. They realized, however, that
Mayor Lightner had several things going for him
besides this trend and his personality. He had
political experience and he had a campaign style
from which both he and his opponent never
deviated. At the time of his election, he had the
backing of the Raleigh News and Observer and
incumbent mayor, Tom Bradshaw.
During Mayor Lightner’s, tenure, Raleigh, NC
was cited as an "All-American City." This
commendation had never been bestowed on the
city before. In a quiet and yet determined way he
brokered the hundreds of compromises that
moved Raleigh from a small segregated southern
city to the growing metropolitan city that it is
today.
Mayor Lightner spoke softly and listened well.
The issues of the day called for vision, hard work,
determination, negotiation and compromise; and
he proved to be great at all those. His election was
a precursor to what would happen across the
South in later years.
Brother Lightner was a member of the Iota Iota
Chapter in Raleigh, NC and he served as
Chairman of the Fraternity’s Life Membership
Foundation for a number of years. Brother
Lightner was an influential leader throughout the
Fraternity, he was well-known, well-respected
and well-loved among many Omega men.

Tau Gamma Gamma Chapter Holds Ceremony for Veterans
Fort Bragg, NC– Members of Tau
Gamma Gamma Chapter traveled
to the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs
(VA) Medical Center on November
10, 2009 to pay respects and
participate in the Veterans Day
ceremony at the medical facility.
The day’s events included a wreathlaying ceremony, a reception and
visit with veterans in their rooms.
It is truly an honor to be among
the many active and reserve
military members serving in today’s
Armed Forces. Veterans Day has
such a significant meaning dating
back as early as 1919 as Armistice
Day to what it is known today as
Veterans’ Day. There aren’t many
people living in the United States
who don’t know someone who has
served in the Armed Forces, so let’s
not forget to pay respect to those
who have made similar sacrifices
and others who have paid the
ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
If you haven’t visited a
Veterans Affairs hospital or talked
to a Veteran, try to do so in 2010
as it will surely validate their
reason for serving andprovide
you with a clear understanding.
Why we serve? Thursday, 11
November 2010 is Veterans’ Day
and we at TGG charge each and
every member of the Mighty Sixth
District of Omega Psi Phi, Inc. to
help honor military veterans.

NCCU Tau Psi Chapter: Changing the Image of College Students
Durham, NC—When some people think of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. they think of the
guys that jump around in gold boots and military
fatigues. As a way to end typical stereotypes
related to the Fraternity, the Tau Psi Chapter has
started a campaign to change their perceived
image. “It’s not all we do…we’re business men
too,” said Christopher Rawlinson, NCCU chapter
president.
According to Rawlinson, the primary focus of
the campaign is to change the image of N. C.
Central University’s campus. Once a month
during 10:40 break, brothers of the Tau Psi
Chapter of Omega Psi Phi set up outside the
Alfonso Elder Student Union to sell men’s business
attire. “I’ve seen them selling during 10:40
break…more people would stop by if they knew,”
said Thomas Lucas, marketing senior.
The prices for the attire range from $1 for a tie
to $10 for an entire 3-piece suit. The clothing
provided is not only sold to students, faculty
members can also take advantage of the
opportunity. “It’s a nice thing to do because
appearance does matter,” said Lucas. The items
sold are donated from the graduate chapter of the
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The profits are put
towards the chapter’s assessments but, according
to Rawlinson, “it’s not for us to make money.”
According to Rawlinson, the NCCU chapter
of Omega Psi Phi has been enforcing the
“change the image” campaign for about 3
years. “The school has been changing its
image so we decided to change with the
school,” said Rawlinson. “Men don’t think it’s
cool enough or they just don’t have it.”
The Chapter has reached out by speaking
with professors outside of the business
department that have influence over their
classrooms to encourage students to dress in
business attire on a regular basis.
The NCCU Tau Psi Chapter of Omega Psi
Phi requires all members to dress in business
attire every Wednesday to encourage students
to commit to the campaign. “When you dress
a certain way you feel a certain way and
perform better” said Rawlinson.
Rawlinson believes that they have not seen
as much change as they would like to see, but
insists that the Fraternity may branch off and
begin selling female business attire also.

Making A Difference in the Lives of Young Omega Men
By Brother Michael A. Boykin, Director of Public Relations
High Point, NC— “Omega Men Helping Omega
Men” - what a novel concept considering our
Fraternity is based on friendship and brotherhood! It
doesn’t take a mandate from our International
Headquarters for individual brothers to come up with
ideas and ways that we can Uplift each other in
Omega.
Several years ago, as an Advisor of Kappa Lambda
Chapter at North Carolina State University, I often
went through my Fraternity shirts and picked out
paraphernalia that I no longer wore (fit) and gave to
my undergraduates as they visited my home for some
knowledge and Uplift.
Additionally, I would go through my regular
clothing and prepare to take it to Goodwill. One year,
I just decided to see if my undergrads wanted to look
through all the items I was going to give away before I
dropped them off to Goodwill. Most of them found
several items, shirts, coats, fleece jackets and other
items they could use. Low and behold, it was a winwin situation! They felt good about receiving stuff and
I felt good about giving it away to some good
brothers.
One day, we were at the Sixth District September
2009 Council Meeting and I saw one of my
undergraduates wearing a sweater that I had given
him. All of a sudden, it dawned on me that this could
be a program implemented to help other
undergraduates throughout the Sixth District.
About two weeks before the December 2009
Council Meeting, I sent out a notice to all brothers to
bring gently used clothing to the first Sixth District
Dress for Success Clothing Exchange. The items
pictured on these two pages are a result of brothers
taking time to help our undergraduates as they
prepare for interviews for graduate school or the
workforce.
Most of the items were claimed by the
undergraduates. Brother Keith Pemberton of the Beta
Kappa Kappa Chapter (High Point, NC) took
unclaimed items to a local men’s ministry. This is
another main goal of the Dress for Success program;
helping local men’s programs, just as we help our
undergraduates.
