Nordiques tre Canadiens
MONTREAL (UPI) - Real
Cloutier scored on a 50-footer with
7.45 left Sunday night to lead the
Quebec Nordiques to a 4-4 tie with
the Montreal Canadiens.
The Nordiques had a one-man advantage when Cloutier shot from
just inside the blueline past Montreal goalie Richard Sevigny.
The Canadiens led 3-1 entering the
final period but Quebec defenseman
Normand Rochefort picked up a
lose puck in front of the net and
lifted a 30-foot slapshot past Sevigny
to narrow the Canadiens' lead to 3-2.
Two minutes later, at 4:26, Doug
Wickenheiser capped off a threeway pass when he slipped his 18th
goal behind Nordiques goalie Daniel
Bouchard.
Wilf Paiement narrowed Montreal's lead to 4-3, backhanding a rebound off Sevigny's glove into the
Montreal net. Pierre Mondou put
Montreal ahead.at 17:46 of the opening period with his 13th goal but
Quebec tied it 12 seconds later on
Anton Stastny's 15th goal.
The Canadiens, who held Quebec
to only one shot in the middle
period, got second-period goals
from Steve Shutt and Ryan Walter.
Shutt banged in a rebound off the
Quebec post to make it 2-1 at 15:08
and Walter tallied with his 20th goal
at 16:36.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (UPI) - Mike
Foligno scored against his former
teammates early in the third period
Sunday night to give the Buffalo
Sabres a 2-2 tie with the Detroit Red
Wings.
Bruins down Devils
BOSTON (UPI) - Mike O'Connell
and Mike Krushelnyski each had a
goal and an assist Sunday night to
lead the Boston Bruins to a 5-2 decision over the New Jersey Devils.
Flyers stop Capitals
LANDOVER, Md. (UPI) - Mark
Howe, Ray Allison and Ilkka
Sinisalo scored third period goals
Sunday to lead the Philadelphia
Flyers to a 6-3 triumph over the
Washington Capitals, snapping the
Caps' unbeaten streak at 14 games.
Howe broke a 3-3 tie just 26
seconds into the final period with a
five-foot wrist shot that dribbled
past Washington goalie Al Jensen.
Allison made it 5-3 at 6:57 and
Sinisalo iced the win at 11:56.
Islanders nip Whalers
HARTFORD, Conn. (UPI) Tomas Jonsson set up the go-ahead
goal and scored the game-winner
Sunday night to lift the New York
Islanders to a 3-2 victory over Hartford, the fourth straight loss for the
Whalers.

McCarthy scored a shortnanded
goal with 56 seconds left in the first
period, snapping Broten's rebound
past Winnipeg goalie Doug Soetaert.
Broten upped the North Stars'
lead to 2-0 on a power play 17
seconds into the second period when
he tipped a pass through Soetaert.
Winnipeg's Dale Hawerchuk
scored at 2:46 when he bounced a 15foot wristshot off the pads of Minnesota goaltender Gilles Meloche,
but the North Stars' Mike Eaves got
the goal back just six seconds later,
beating Soetaert from close range.
The Jets' Paul MacLean narrowed the gap to 3-2 at 10:39 of the final
period with a power play but Winnipeg couldn't get the tying goal.
Minnesota defenseman Dan Mandich was issued a game misconduct
after a fight with Jets' center Dave
Christian. While on his way to the
penalty box, Mandich argued with
referee Andy van Hellemond and
was ejected.
Black Hawks top Blues
CHICAGO (UPI) - Tom Lysiak
had a goal and two assists Sunday
night to lead the Chicago Black
Hawks to their 11th straight home
victory, a 7-4 decision over ttie St.

Placid Frostbite Race Jan. 8
LAKE PLACID - The 11th Annual Lajce Placid Frostbite Race
will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, with competition at 2.75 and 5,5 miles.
Registration will start at 10 a.m. at the Lake Placid Olympic Arena
with the race to begin at 11 a.mj frbm the Lake Placid Post Office.
There will be two classes (open and masters) for women at both
distances and four classes (open, submaster, master and senior) for
men at the two distances. Entry fee of $4.00 will include
refreshments and buffet. There will be awards for the top three
finishers in each class.

CHAMPLAIN — Tom Lacey tossed In 42 points and Jeff Holmes
added 34 to lead Express Lanes to a 136-103 romp over Ayerst in Northern Basketball League play. Kevin Daugherty contributed 24
points and Rocky Dfollette, 22. Don James had 44 points in a losing
cause and Jim Anctil, 16.

championship contests Friday, at 1

AH proceeds from the tournament
will go to the board's scholarship
fund. The local basketball officials
each year present two scholarships
to area student-athletes.

Area stars catch on with Hamilton
CLINTON — Three area gridders were among
the leading receivers for the pass-oriented
Hamilton College Continentals this fall.
Dan Capone, senior split end from Ray Brook,
Bryan Foster, junior split end from West Chazy,
and John Steffy, junior tight end from Port Kent,
combined for 72 passes for 1056 yards and eight
touchdowns.
Hamilton, under first-year head coach Steve Stetson, posted a 1-7 record, but lost three games by a
combined total of-14 points. The Continentals faced
one of New England's toughest Division III
schedules as the eight Hamilton opponents combined for,i 4l-.'5 (.539) record.

skins, earned a place in the Hamilton record books.
The 6-2, 180-pounder concluded his brilliantpasscatching days at Hamilton ranked third in career
receptions (83 catches) and second in total yardage
(1312) yards. He also scored seven touchdowns.
Capone's career statistics would have even better
bad not a knee injury during his sophomore year
sidelined him for six games. Recurring knee problems associated with the injury required Capone
to wear a brace all of last year, severly restricting
-his-mebility-After strengiheningthe knee with an off-season
conditioning program, Capone shed the brace for
the 1982 season and proceeded to catch 29passes for
444 yards and two touchdowns. In the season finale,
a 14-0 loss to Union, Capone was the Ralph H. Rue
Most Valuable Player Award winner, hauling in six
passes for 102 yards.
Capone, a Biology major, is the son of Mr. and )
Mrs. Phillip Capone. He is also a member of the
1982-83 Continentals' varsity hockey team.
Steffy, an all-star standout for AuSable Valley,
finished among the leaders in receiving and also
topped the team in scoring.
The 6-2, 215-pound Steffy benefitted from
Hamilton's five-receiver, shotgun offense, used

games. He caught 21" passes for 253 yards and four
touchdowns. He also added two two-point conversions, giving him 28 total points.
In three years, Steffy has 33 receptions for 426
yards and five touchdowns.
Steffy, a Government major, is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Steffy.
. Foster, former Beekmantown Eagles' all-star, '
also figured prominently in the Hamilton passing
game. The 6-1,185-pound junior caught 22 passes
-for-359. yards and.two. touchdowns. He had a teamleading average of 18.1 yards a reception.
Foster is an Economics major at Hamilton.
Kellogg leads Pacers past Knicks 87-81
'INDIANAPOLIS- (UPI) - Clark
Kellogg grabbed 18 rebounds and
scored 22 points Sunday night to
carry the Indiana Pacers to an 87-81
triumph over the New York Knicks.
Indiana led 43-41 at the half but
the Pacers outscored the Knicks 20_8 early in the third quarter and took
a 71-57 lead entering the fourth
period. Kellogg, guarded by three
different players during the game,
sparked Indiana during the' thirdperiod burst.
Billy Knight added 17 points and
Herb Williams 16 for the Pacers, 1017. Bernard King led the Knicks, 919, with 17 points and Louis Orr added 11.

Abdul-Jabbar scored 8 points in the
final four minutes Sunday night to
lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 9694 victory over the Houston
Rockets.
Toney keys 76ers
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (UPI) Andrew Toney, listed as questionable Sunday night because of an
injured shoulder, scored 13£f his 23
points in the fourth quarter to lift
the Philadelphia 76ers to a 124-122
decision over the San Antonio Spurs.
SuperSonics nip Suns
SEATTLE (UPI), + Jack Sikma
scored 20 points and pulled down 18
rebounds and Gus Williams and
David Thompson added,17 pointsapiece Sunday night to lift the Seattle SuperSonics over the Phoenix
Suns 88-87.
Thompson and Williams, who had
just 4 points betweeh them at the
half, combined for 28 of Seattle's
final 36 points.
